Anybody have any idea of what in the world happened to him?
All I ever heard back in the day was he was found hung by some sort of wire around his neck.
That blackening on his face and chest certainly looks odd.

I was under the impression that he had been found with the tubing from his catheter wrapped tightly around his neck :o the blackening appears to be soot; you can see places that appear to have been wet and it has streaked...
the redness on his face is odd also; asphyxiation causes you to turn blue; this looks more like a burn or from blunt force trauma...

It looks like he was garroted to me, jmho.
I'm not familiar with his death, but a quick search told me that he was found 5 or 7 days after death, so I suppose it's natural that some decomposing had already started.
I don't see anything unusual in the photo. Bodies do turn black after a certain point.
I'm more curious about the defect behind his left ear.

The blood on the floor may have come from his mouth/nose. The body, obviously, expels gas and liquid when being moved.

If it was several days after death, then that would explain the black skin, especially in a warm climate...

Okay, I've examined the posted photo much closer. What I mistook for a physical defect on the corpse is actually, I think, a date stamp. I believe it says "'97", which is odd because Schneider died in January 1996.
Seems a strange location for a timestamp on a photograph.
Also, Schneider was overweight and there is post-mortem bloating. Still, the ligature looks very tight. Not sure how dexterous he was missing fingers.
The light patch on his face is consistent with the story I've read as to how his body was found. It looks to me like his face was pushed up against the back of the wheelchair at time of death. You can see that his upper lip was turned back up and frozen in that position post-mortem.
The pressure of his face up against the back of the wheelchair restricted the bloodflow during and after death in that area of the face.

So we can see the ex- wife was the one responsible for the 'hung by piano wire' story I originally heard back in the day.
We can also see that besides physical issues Phil had severe mental issues as well.
His friend Ron Rummel told me he had been a pathological liar for as long as he had known him (which had been quite a while).
He also told me Phil lost those fingers while playing around with explosives in the back yard as a kid.
