Well, we have read a few streams of thought on why this may have happened, one being they were naughty, so hence were wiped.

Graham certainly does a great job of explaining the findings of satellite imagery quite well.
Up until now we have had no mechanism to understand why so many ancient cultures from around the world have their own version of the great flood story.
A worldwide flood would certainly need an explanation of huge magnitude, and all we have had to focus on up until recently was the story of a close pass of Niburu, whereas a Shoemaker Levy 9 type event makes a lot more sense on a global scale.
It also explains how the 'gods' were able to know of this event in advance and so warn some of the residents of what was to come, and how to survive it.
