Title: Need some help
Post by: Sgt.Rocknroll on July 06, 2018, 12:38:58 PM
I collect or use to collect comic books.
For a long time now I have had these memories of either a Sunday Funny serial or a comic book that featured this:

Two brothers? Sort of like Tarzan with braided hair with long locks with beads in their hair.
One was black, one was white.
That's all I remember.
If anyone remembers this please let me know. I know it's not much to go on and I have searched and searched the web but can't find anything on this.
Help if you can. 8)

Thanks oh so much for the info.

I'm leaning more to brothers, only because they were of the same age and dressed alike.
They were more young men than boys.
They wore loincloths like Tarzan and I remember 'spears'.
They both had the same hairdo, i.e. beads in their hair and it seems to me that they were more like braids.

The story may not have appeared in a comic form (it might have been a Sunday Funny feature or a feature in a magazine).

That's all I've got.
I started collecting Comics about when I was about 12 and that would be around 1962. As I said I don't know if it was a comic or not.
I was in the scouts so I was thinking it might be one of those serials from Boys Life. But no luck.

Once again thanks for the try. If I find out who and what it was I'll let you know...

Quote"Brothers of the Spear" was a long-running backup feature in the Tarzan comic-book series created by American company Western Publishing and published first through Dell Comics and then through Gold Key Comics. Though published as part of a licensed Edgar Rice Burroughs franchise, this original series was owned by Western.[citation needed]

Plot
The Brothers of the Spear were Dan-El and Natongo. Natongo was the son of a Zulu chieftain in the land that would become Botswana, and Dan-El was his adopted brother. They became sub-chiefs, swore brotherhood and had adventures together. They learned Dan-el was king by right, whose throne had been usurped. What was notable was that Dan-El was white, and his kingdom was that of a lost white tribe in Africa (Aba-Zulu), while Natongo was black (later ruling neighboring Tungelu). The first two years of the series dealt with them winning their thrones. By that time, they had individually gotten married. But even being kings and husbands, they continued to have adventures together, many times with their wives.

History
The feature was created by writer Gaylord Du Bois and artist Jesse Marsh in Tarzan #25 (1951), and ran continuously through #156 (1966). Artist Russ Manning did some of his earliest comics work on this series, beginning in Tarzan #39 (Dec. 1952). The ending of the series was due in part to Russ Manning moving to take over Tarzan from Marsh in #154.[citation needed] New stories would appear in #160, 161 (by Manning), and later in #202 and #203 (by Mike Royer).
An additional story appeared in Dell Giant #51 (Tarzan, King of the Jungle).
