I didn't know this even existed. It was interesting ( to me anyway).

IT's amazing what a bit of military technology can do when it is applied to something different. Fantastic!
What military technology?
@Space Maverick, I would guess you have seen SAR technology information before bud?..
the below is quite interesting, esp the part where they talk about creating images
SNIP -
"SAR polarimetry is a technique used for deriving qualitative and quantitative physical information for land, snow and ice, ocean and urban applications based on the measurement and exploration of the polarimetric properties of man-made and natural scatterers. Terrain and land use classification is one of the most important applications of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (POLSAR).[33]
SNIP -

The history and development in the above are fascinating :)
A quick link that compares the two technologies - https://www.era.lib.ed.ac.uk/handle/1842/6226

Quite honestly, this is the first time I found out this technology existed. I don't normally keep up with advancing technology at least with this type anyway.
Could this technology be used in the search for MH 370?
Hi Space M,
Definitely , but SAR wont work thru deep water as I understand it from a space or airborne platform, I don't know about LIDAR capabilities in deep water BUT I do know that there is a development for using LASARS to communicate with subs; so I suspect that technology could be modified to help "see thru" the water column bud -
I became aware of Synthetic Ap Radar back in the mid-80's Space (JOINT STARS & JOINT RIVET)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_Grumman_E-8_Joint_STARS
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_RC-135
And SAR use in detecting land mines in the mid 90's

Just found this - https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/education/seafloor-mapping/lidar.html

LIDAR
Where did you get that idea? From what I have read LIDAR is a civil technology, and an old one.
