I may be late, but I just watched this movie and at first I didn't think I'd like it too much, but after hanging in there, I found it thoroughly enjoyable.
The special effects were outstanding.
Anyone else?

Not as late as me Sgt.. I have yet to watch it mate :)
It's the first time I see any reference to that movie, and I may be wrong but I don't think it will be worth my time. :)
Well to each his own. If you've ever played video games whether old ones or the new ones, this will be fun to watch.
I have been playing video games for the last 30 years (although I have little time for them at the moment), but I saw something I didn't like at the end: "directed by: Steven Spielberg". :)
If I ever take the time to watch it I may even like it, but I'm not expecting any thing special from Spielberg, to me he has only made a really good movie, "Duel".

What about Jaws? Saving Private Ryan? Close Encounters? Those were pretty good.

What about Jaws?
Meh.
QuoteSaving Private Ryan?
Didn't watch it, not my style.
QuoteClose Encounters?
Another "meh".
I find most Spielberg movies as just average, some (like "War of the Worlds") even below average.
sarge,it was tops!
i even have a poke at it over on a thread i have with movies and my input.its called "movies that may mention me".
my sources say disney is running that plan and really invested in it.its not being told to the populace yet.
the mechanics i suspect is holding us back.lots of room for getting rich in future tech as seen in show.
lots of amazing futurism.
i personally believe the movie was actually an easter egg in itself and future easter eggs are to follow.
i even think i know of the person of whom the easter egg is about.
if more movies come out along the same script.i will be looking for more easter eggs.
remember,he picked up a robbie the robot just before picking up the egg orb.hehe!
in the darpa scene of pixel, the scientist says settle down radioshack robbie.
theres more but thats enough.
the easter egg isnt me though.
its someone very famous who earned it but stays in the shadows.if it is an egg.
my favorite movies that ive seen on dvd this year are rpo, atomic blond for realism and project almanac for best scifi and great video style.live action super eight.i really get into that style.
i had my doubts when first pushing play but ready player one the movie was awesome,i got right into it mentally.lots of things to hold in the young and old alike. the ending kinda sucked though.too disney-esk.but well worth what i payed for it.
Close Encounters was a classic :)
Haven't watched the movie Ready Player One but read the book a few years back and found it suprisingly good.
Cheers.

Close Encounters was a classic :)
Yes it was :D Based on the SERPO story and the frenchman was supposed to be Jacques Valee
Nice to see you still around Karl
Good to see you mate and a ho ho happy Christmas to you and everyone else.
Are you sure the Frenchman wasn't based on Dr Claude Poher? :)
All the best!

The CGI is some of the best I've ever seen, and seeing Chun Li standing off in the distance brought tears to my eyes, but there really isn't much substance there. RPO is a re-telling of the classic Piscean "hero beats the villain and gets the girl" story, albeit refracted through a very Aquarian lens. Thematically speaking, it's somewhere between Shrek and TRON, if you can imagine such a thing. You might be expecting some
Back to the Future references, but a few scenes with the DeLorean, some musical notes from the soundtrack, and the fact that the hero's avatar is (very loosely) visually modelled on Michael J. Fox, are all that's there.
RPO does have two interesting elements, though.
a} The degree to which it demonstrates that corporate Capitalism knows that it is the new primal fear of collective humanity. The villain is a very stereotypical corporate chief executive.
b} The degree to which said villain attempts to verbally negotiate with the hero, prior to the final confrontation. Sure, on an archetypical level it's very much a repeat of Satan telling Jesus that he could give him the world if Jesus would worship him, but there is an extra layer of credibility added on top, to the point where you can almost see the hero taking the payout and walking away, because of how it is presented.
It's still definitely a Spielberg movie, but it's also one of the weakest he has made; and that's coming from someone who considers
Hook a personal all-time favourite, as well, despite the fact that I know how much
Hook was (unfairly, in my opinion) hated by the critics.
RPO is also almost certainly the least original movie Spielberg has ever made; but then again, it helps to remember that a lack of originality is pretty much the film's entire
point. This is a pop culture anthology, "Where's Wally?" movie, like
Wreck-It Ralph. If you are my age, (40+) pathologically infantile, (as yes, I admit that I am) and therefore being reminded of hordes of video game and pop culture references from your childhood is something that appeals to you, then RPO will likely be something you will enjoy. If not, however, you won't.
The 60s marked the beginning of the division of humanity into the Morlocks and the Eloi. RPO is a case of the corporate Morlocks holding a rattle over the Eloi's cot, and attempting to profit from giving the Eloi what they want.
Yes I make the connection with 'Tron' (which was way ahead of it's time btw). And I get tired of the same theme of corporational greed screwing over the helpless masses.
A better ending would have been that the 'hero' and his 'poor' minions of bottom dwellers, did EXACTLY what the 'evil' villain wanted in some twisted way and in turn hooked them on to something else.
But I guess that's what squeals are for 'Ready Player Two'?... 8)
