A powerful earthquake Tuesday rattled the northern tip of Japan's Honshu Island, about 200 miles north of Tokyo.

The 6.4 magnitude quake struck off the Yamagata prefecture in northwestern Japan and prompted tsunami advisories. It hit at 10:22 p.m. Tuesday(9:20am EDT) according to USGS.
The Niigata prefecture was hit hardest according to local news reports.

Four People were injured in Sakata in Yamagata prefecture but their injuries were not life threatening.

Tsunami advisories were in place along coastal areas of Yamagata, Niigata, and Ishikawa prefectures.Residents were warned to move away from the coasts. A small tsunami was reported on Awashima Island in the sea of Japan.

No abnormalities were reported at any of the nuclear power plants in Japan, Chief Secretary Yoshihide Suga said in a news conference.

Roads were blocked and more than 9,000 homes were without electricity.
