Title: Extent of Human Radio Broadcasts in Universe - Pic.
Post by: karl 12 on May 23, 2012, 10:46:43 PM
Thought this was a good pic putting into perspective the extent of human radio broadcasts sent out into the universe by us over the last hundred years - it's been stated that the size of the bubble is 200 light years across but it does look rather humbling when compared to the incredible vastness of our home galaxy (nevermind the countless billions of other galaxies).

QuoteExtent of Human Radio Broadcasts / The Tiny Humanity Bubble by Adam Grossman
Mankind has been broadcasting radio waves into deep space for about a hundred years now — since the days of Marconi.

That, of course, means there is an ever-expanding bubble announcing Humanity's presence to anyone listening in the Milky Way. This bubble is astronomically large (literally), and currently spans approximately 200 light years across. But how big is this, really, compared to the size of the Galaxy in which we live (which is, itself, just one of countless billions of galaxies in the observable universe)?

To answer that question, Adam put together the following diagram of our galaxy with the "Humanity Bubble"

Which might be a good thing actually.

See the movie Battleship and you will see my point!

A better movie than I thought it would be!

Well its even less really because the early broadcast waves were very weak and would loose there coherent signal. TV is just noise beyond 20 light years

But we are trying to contact the Gliese 581 system... a nice little system only 20.5 light years away

And you know what the TOP MESSAGE was ?

Hello Gliese 581d inhabitant. Can you help us humans travel through space and become smart like you. Please do not eat us we are a friendly race.

I kid you not  :o

I hear it bombed at the box office :P

Maybe people are tired of the bad old Alien theme... heck even History Channel and Steven Hawking is on that band wagon :P

There is a PRIME example of projecting your worst fears into your conversation!

And it makes you wonder what an entity will think when it finally translates that message. " Eat?" ......" What do they mean..... eat?"
And....." why do they cower before us..... when they don't even KNOW us!!!! Hmmmmm this is a living entity that seems to have issues!!!!"

After having just used it I have to say that I hate that phrase " has issues"..... it ranks right up there with the insipid...." GOOD JOB" you hear almost every elementary school teacher utter at one time or another..... and alongside the title "gentleman" being referred to some criminal as he is being loaded into a paddy wagon.... I have often wondered why they do that??? Why dont they call him by a less honorable name?....and while I am on a roll.... How about the phrase " A kitchen ( or anything else... you pick) to Die for!!!!! I haven't seen one that would earn that remark from me.... Even Littleenkis wonderful galley.....

OK back on track

With a Qualight transmission there is no " extent"
What would that mean. I hope we figure out better things to say!!! Linda.
