The 2012 Transit of Venus
Presenter: Dr. Sten Odenwald
Goddard Spaceflight Center
SpaceMath@NASA
Astronomy Cafe
On June 5, 2012, the planet Venus will move across the face of the sun. Such transits of Venus are among the rarest of planetary alignments, and they come in pairs that are eight years apart but separated by more than a century. Transits of Venus inspire public fascination and scientific activity. Historically, this rare alignment is how scientists have measured the size of our solar system, specifically the distance between the Earth and the sun, which is now identified as the "astronomical unit." During the 1761 transit, observers noticed a fuzzy halo of light surrounding the dark spot of Venus, visible only when Venus was at the sun's edge. Scientists of the time concluded that Venus must have an atmosphere, and later scientists confirmed that it does: a dense atmosphere of mainly carbon dioxide with clouds of sulfuric acid.
Dr. Odenwald presented "A Rare Astronomical Event: Transit of Venus" at the Library of Congress in May 2012, and here we offer the slides from his illustrated lecture.

The Venus Transit ~ 30 May 2012
The Gemini solar eclipse effects linger. It seems that we've discovered that Siri... the voice in your iPhone, has loose lips. Everything you say to her is archived and she has no conscience of what is appropriate to repeat, record, report or what have you. IBM recently banned iPhone use. The ACLU issued privacy concerns about Siri and Dictation software months ago but few listened then.
The big news is the Venus transit. Next Tuesday to Wednesday, depending upon where in the world you reside, the highly anticipated transit astronomically culminates at 01:30:43 GMT on June 6th.
The Venus transit will bring to light matters of greed, economic advantage and/or economic exploitation, matters of social standing, women's issues and concerns about the labor force.
Let's see, the union-busting Governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker, faces a recall election on the day of the transit. I'll be riveted to election results.
Film industry forums are peppered with blogs and articles regarding the merit of female film directors. Really? The Cannes Film Festival is under fire for their exponentially lopsided ratio of male directors contrasted with women directors in films selected.

How to view the transit of Venus
14:30 AEDT Fri Jun 1 2012ago
By Nick Pearson, ninemsnVIEWS: Staring at the sun during next week's transit of Venus can cause profound damage to the eyes, but there are other ways to observe the stunning astronomical event.
ninemsn will be livestreaming the planet passing across the face of the sun in conjunction with Sydney Observatory when it takes place on June 6.
Sydney Observatory astronomer Geoffrey Wyatt said those with telescopes can observe the transit with handmade filtering devices.
Sydney Observatory is using one of its major telescopes to livestream the astronomical event with ninemsn.
The transit of Venus last took place in 2004, but will not occur again until 2117.
It will begin at 8.16am AEST and finish at 2.45pm on June 6.

Ill be on Clearwater Beach that night and will video it is at all possible.
SOHO showed it within my range of view around sunset, and Im always right there for that!

I don't think it will be visible in Portugal. :(
It will not be visible in Portugal, probably just a couple of hours.

We are not so called orbitting the sun, it's all about spiral pathways, and the planets are trailing the sun on it's spiral pathway.
All of the planets have sequencial relationships to the sun.
And each has sequencial relationships to each other....all fibonacci based.

Everything you need to know about next week's Transit of Venus
On Tuesday/Wednesday June 5/6, Earth will have the best seat — the only seat — for a great show: the Transit of Venus across the face of the Sun. This is a relatively rare event, and the next one won't happen until December 10, 2117, so I'm guessing this will be the last time you'll be able to see it.
I have a lot of info below, so I've broken it up into sections. Also, a special note: Fraser Cain, Pamela Gay, and I are hosting a live online video chat star party for the transit! That live video feed will be embedded here on the blog at the time of the transit, so if you read this blog — and you do — you'll see it. I'll have more info closer to the date.
Oh — you can click on the pictures here to embiggen them and get more info, too.
