maybe nothing?
anyone?
RSOE nice site too link too :)
Ha! When I first read that I misread Avon for Avalon and thought that it was a report from Catalina Island... which would be unusual even though they have some big nasty sharks out there.
I think it was about 1974... the JAWS movies were out I think whatever year it was ( events blurr when you live on an island!)
Anyway one of the local swordfishing boats latched onto a Great White.... and brought it in.... and was TRYING to get the danged thing hanging on the Marlin winch so that they could get pictures up on the pier. The danged thing was SO BIG it would not swing clear of the boat. By that time the harbor master ( hello Johnny) came screaming down the pier using explitives that would have made ANYBODY blush.... " You get that... blanket blank danged blankety blank thing of my pier you get that blanety blank thing gone out of here NOW you hear me? NOW!!!! They hurriedly lowered the thing back onto their boat figuring I guess to take it to San Pedro and the markets there.... and it Filled the side aisleway of the boat and was almost as long as the boat was!!!
We never saw one report in the news and no one on the pier said anything either.... we all took a sort of understood code of silence. It was early summer.... and just before dawn... the tourists hadn't even showed up yet to stake their claim on their little piece of beach for the day ( funny routine.... rush out at dawn... put your beach blankets down and then go have breakfast!) No tourist saw that shark. And no islander ever said a word.....
After that.... I pretty much stuck to pools. Linda

The city was cleaning up this morning after a tornado swept through downtown Hampton on Friday evening and knocked out power to more than 5,000, damaged tents for the weekend's Blackbeard Pirate Festival and moved a yacht from the water at the Hampton Yacht Club into a parking lot. Shortly before 8 p.m., storms that produced waterspouts were spotted near the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel. About 15 minutes later, one moved onto land in Hampton. The twister took Hampton residents by surprise. The city does not have warning sirens, according to Robin McCormick, the city's communications director. Some historical re-enactors in town for the Blackbeard Pirate Festival spotted a cloud rise and fall and take the shape of a funnel Friday night. Cheryl Norris said pirates camping in Mill Point Park fled for cover in a nearby parking garage. The wind was so strong it lifted one woman slightly off the ground and almost prevented Norris from taking cover. "A friend just pushed me into the garage," she said. Ellen McAllister, who lives near the Hampton Yacht Club, said pressure from the tornado made her ears ache and ring. She ran upstairs to get her 2-year-old son from his room before taking shelter in the basement. McAllister said the storm ripped away her upstairs porch, tossed a column from the front of her house into the yard, and sent bricks from the chimney flying down into her car window. A giant pecan tree bent and fell in the wind.
