Amazing Sky, how big it gets after a couple years!
What fertilizer do you use for them?
Ive never had luck with garlic, as something always eats the edges of the bulbs and they get big scabs on them...those are beautiful!

Oh yeah, bee boxes are coming in August, when the bee guy gets going again from vacation. Hes going to set them up for me and show me the ropes!

Thanks for the ideas, and videos you posted it got me going!

happy gardening!

One place where I lived in Oklahoma had wild onions and garlic growing in the backyard.  It smelled really good when we mowed.

Absolutely beautiful!  A magnificent harvest.

It is so pitifully dry here that my garden has died.  I tried my best to keep it watered, but I couldn't keep up with the sun.

On the bright side, my cactus plant is thriving  ;D

Very nice harvest. If you hadn't told me differently, Sky Otter, I would been sure it was elephant garlic, which I grew for the first time this past year. I'm definitely going to add some more varieties this fall, so thanks for the link.

J, you might want to investigate the sub-irrigated planters like the Earthtainer. These are great for gardening in dry climates.

Rose

elephant garlic isn't really garlic..it's one of the onion family...not sure which but i think it might be leek..
and last year i grew 6 varities and wasn't happy with any of them..
this year it was my old stuff from years back and some of my f-i-l's  and one  from last year that is supposed to be a long keeper called nootka
two are soft necks and one a hard neck

if i can give you any advice it would be to find and old garlic grower and beg one or two heads of the oldest stock they have...
from the ones i have tried the new ones are not that great
ah ya got me on one of my favorite topics..growing stuff
sorry to run on

Oh, oh, oh!  I am HUNGRY now!  I adore garlic, often using a whole bulb in a single serving!

[drool]  Lovely, sky!  Just lovely!

Deuem story time.

The Great Garlic Scam; ( true story )

About 5 years ago the price of garlic was at an all time low. Almost could not give it away. Then all of a sudden the news came out that a super rich guy was going to make a billion dollars by buying up all the garlic stock in China. ( this made the headlines )

Now that would not be as hard to do as you think, if you got the right connections. Mostly just follow the East coast. Every one went into a panic and rushed out and bought garlic. Within a week you could not find even one clove. Guess what?

The price tripled in a week.  Later it was found out to be a rumor started by guess who. Yea you got it. The garlic farmers! They did their part also by holding back garlic from the shops to make the problem look real. Some even just feed it to the pigs. Bottom line of the story is that everyone got upset but the price of garlic never came back down, so the garlic farmers won!

In a way, a lot of us also won when we got cheaper garlic pig that year, preseasoned from the inside out. ( you are what you eat )

I like my garlic pickled, in cloves, in salad or just snack on them. Then give the girlfriend or wife a big kiss! ( which ever one your with! )

We do have 1 good meal here with garlic. It is a long leaf cabbage with browned garlic in an oil sauce steamed together. ( sounds like - dah ba choi ) I make it with Olive oil, ( which is not easy to get virgin oil here )

Sky, hold on to one of those for me till I fly by and pick it up! they look soooooo gooooood.

sky otter, I read this and thought of your crop...lol

QuotePolice: 5 suspected of stealing 9.5 tons of garlic

Jun 27, 10:25 AM (ET)

VIENNA (AP) - Austrian police did not need sniffing dogs to locate this suspected heist - 9.5 tons of garlic.

The Austria Press Agency says police stopped three overloaded and sagging vans about to cross into Hungary from Austria on Wednesday and found them packed to the roof with the pungent cargo. After questioning the five men in the vehicles they charged them on suspicion of receiving stolen goods.

Police say the garlic apparently came from Spain and estimate its value at (EURO)30,000 ($37,500). The men - all Romanian nationals - were not named, in line with Austrian privacy laws.

APA cites one officer as saying it was clear what the vans were carrying even before their doors were opened.

"All three vehicles really stunk like garlic," he says.

Those look almost like the ones we usually buy and that I sometimes use as an antibiotic.

The last time I did it was so strong that I almost wasn't able to eat it (I eat it raw), as as soon as it touched my mouth it was almost as if I was eating acid.

But it worked, two days later the infection (in a tooth) was gone. ;D

Quotehey..what are you guys growing?

My crops:

1. Old
2. Anticipation

With one small corner on a floor in a suburban apartment complex to (more or less) call My own, with prospects of moving elsewhere and helping out, I find these two crops to grow marvelously well.

cacti   ;D

I had planted tomatoes, corn, bell peppers, pole beans, potatoes...the staples; everything is crisp and brown now.  I don't have much room for a full garden but that, with canning, would have carried us through nicely. No rain, no nourishment, too much sun & heat.

i can't help but think of the cayce material that i read way back when
about the weather preventing food to be grown...
i started into garden  also way back to prevent it from happening to me
but it is happening

we won't have any fruit locally because of the weather and not it is so hot
if we wouldn't have moved the garden to beside the house we wouldn't have been able to water it
but even with that  it's not going well

my compost pile always grows stuff
this is yesterday morning at 8:41 am

and last evening at 8:45 pm..12 hours and it wasn't that hot yesterday
we are heading into the 90's for the next week

I need to make a trip up to Boulder some day soon.  There's a lady up there who runs a garlic shop. Apparently garlic is one of those things that does well along the front range.  I have plenty of space for it.  I'll put it wher other things fear to tread.  Or grow.

Shasta
i have order garlic twice in the last five years and i hafta say none of it met with my approval
i think they have played with it too much

soooooo
if you have an old farmer selling garlic and you ask him what kind it is
and he says..hell, i don't know, i've grow the same thing forever
that's the one you want

The woman in Boulder does nothing but garlic.  She sells what she grows in this climate.  Farmers markets around here have become overly commercial.  They're not selling local produce, ss much as trying to make money off people who think "farmers market" is some kind of holy grail.

i grow elephant garlic, ive read its not garlic but it taste like garlic.
it is really drought tolerent.most of the time here,it doesnt grow in summer or fall, just dies back and goes dormant until spring.

im going with raised beds next year.im tired of watching my garden die each year.

just got my tomatoe and tobacco seeds for next year in.prudens purple, aunt rubies green and gold seal burley.
lookin forward to hearing about the bee box too.i want bees but tired of investing in losing ventures.if you succeed ,i might be more interested.
