Title: Rover Spirit - Bird Anomaly
Post by: rdunk on June 27, 2012, 06:39:26 PM
A rather interesting feature in a Rover Spirit photo taken on Sol day 088, with the nav cam. What we can see looks like a bird. If a bird, it is possibly from a taxidermy/statue.

This anomaly has the appearance of being a bird, lying on its right side, with a black cloak. On the left, its head is visible, with open beak, and what seems to be its eye.

The two straight lines are to note the tail of the bird.

The "black cloak" is something seemingly around this anomaly, and we can see that it has two definite forms. The top part of the black piece is like a "band", which mates to the balance of the black area.

One can see the shadows of the bird on the ground, as well as the shadow of the "cloak" on the bird.

I will post a screenshot on this anomaly for you, and also a link to the Rover photo.

Here is the link to the Rover S photo:

Not a bird, just a rock.  :)

Could be Armap, but your pick does nothing to make it not look like a bird, IMO of course.

To me it is also obvious that the black piece has "substance" of its own, separate and apart from what it is wrapped around.

There are definitely a lot of rocks to see in this and other pics on that day. And most all of them do just look like rocks. This one is very different, regardless of what you think you see Armap!  :)

Maybe you can find another rock around there for us that has a close likeness to this one??

This is just a personal observation. Does it apply to what is happening here?

I have a shower that has a far wall that has a pattern on it like a sort of marble.... swirls and different colors. While enjoying the shower and contemplating those patterns I have found all kinds of detailed " pictures:  My favorite is of a Lion roaring.... you can see his fangs and his mane and his expression is WONDERFUL! An artist could not have done better. It took me six months to see him....

He is still just part of the wall of the shower.

Linda, I understand that totally, and we probably see things like that occasionally, but there are no "patterns" here for trying to pull out images.  Making up images kinda gets into the "cloud stuff".

All of our minds work somewhat differently, and often some people just aren't able to discern actual objects in images, as well as others. And of course, there are some, that even when they see the objects, still just refuse to accept that such anomalies actually exist.

Fairly common scenarios! I myself sometimes just cannot see what someone else sees in a posted anomaly.

I mainly posted this "bird", because I already know that somebody, on Mars, at some time, has/had a feeling for birds. This knowledge I developed on the basis of the "Birdman of Mars" anomaly that I posted here in April. Wasn't a lot of discussion on it here, but others here did see it too.

Though unusual, I am siding with those who say that it's a rock.  It surely is an unusual shape - but then I have found rocks with many unusual shapes.

But I can surely move to a view that gives it bird-like qualities.

I am sorry guys. I don't really understand the discussion. Is the question what it LOOKS like.... or what it IS. of the two IS choices I would say its a ......

Rock

Which to me looks more like a sea lion than a bird... but thats just what it looks like to me.... <g>  Linda
