Title: Moon flags still standing
Post by: Somamech on July 31, 2012, 08:53:41 PM
Hey John I thought you may get a good Laugh out of this article I saw on ABC in Oz today ;)

Moon flags still standing

QuoteImages taken by a NASA spacecraft show most of the United States flags planted on the Moon by the Apollo astronauts are still standing.

QuoteThe photos from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter show the flags - erected in 1969 when the first humans, Americans Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong, set foot on the Moon - are still casting shadows.

The details are contained in an online article by principal investigator Mark Robinson, who analysed data from the camera.

But Mr Robinson says one of the flags is missing.

"Astronaut Buzz Aldrin reported that the flag was blown over by the exhaust from the ascent engine during liftoff of Apollo 11, and it looks like he was correct!", he said.

Apollo missions ran from 1969 to 1972, shuttling American astronauts to the surface of the Moon.

Six flags were planted during this time.

The orbiter was launched in 2009 to analyse new landing sites on the Moon and send back visual information about the lunar environment via narrow and wide-angle cameras.

"Personally, I was a bit surprised that the flags survived the harsh ultraviolet light and temperatures of the lunar surface, but they did," Mr Robinson said.

"What they look like is another question."

At least the shadows are in the right direction this time ::)

I find it amazing that they can spot this small flag on film, but they 'miss' structures a mile wide & 4 miles high.........

I always found it amusing the the "I see only rocks" people have the nerve to speak. In my book it gives them NO credibility to even look at an anomaly photo and make a guess, when an object has been identified by NASA :D and they still say its blurry rocks.

Like this one... you should see how many 'image artifact' posts there were and others saying its just a blur, or there is no way to tell what it is...

So what do you think it is?

Hey really funny too that Nasa can Land a Rover on Mars, yet they use really crappy SAT  images of the Moon as Proof of the Lunar Landing.  I don't know whether to laugh or cry at that simple fact.

Nah its okay was just kidding...

unlike at ATS when I posted them there, I left the FILE NAME intact here :D

One can look at that file name and get context... :P

One can also copy the image into Google Image search (as per Zorgon,s lessons in the Forum Tips thread) and get all the details... :P

One can also look at Zorgon's website for all that data... :P

Looks like a rock hanging from a parachute made out of stone.

Is this not the Mars lander?
