Post by: Somamech on January 16, 2013, 05:42:02 PM
This Drone is being Tested in Australia Soon so they say.  It is a press release for Joe Pub after all ;)

QuoteThe £125 million ($190 million) Taranis, named after the Celtic god of thunder, can attack targets across continents, automatically dodge missiles and other efforts to bring it down and independently identify targets. It can refuel in mid-air and carry weapons including laser guided bombs and missiles.

The Taranis even has a wiki Page:

QuoteThe BAE Systems Taranis is a British demonstrator programme for Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV) technology. A semi-autonomous unmanned warplane, it is designed to fly intercontinental missions, and will carry a variety of weapons, enabling it to attack both aerial and ground targets. It will furthermore utilise stealth technology, giving it a low radar profile, and it will be controllable via satellite link from anywhere on Earth.[1][2] The Strategic Unmanned Air Vehicles (Experiment) Integrated Project Team, or SUAV(E) IPT, is responsible for auditing and overseeing the project.[3] The aircraft, which is intended to demonstrate the viability of unmanned multi-role systems, is named after the Celtic god of thunder, Taranis.[4]

Whats interesting in the very first News article from the fairfax newspaper is how They made a point of how much of the research came fromBAE in OZ.  Its honestly hard to know whether it's nationalist BS or not with the sorta comments I will qoute, but at the same time it does raise my eyelid a bit as I worked with a guy at some point who's father worked for BAE and he thought he was telling me real secret stuff by saying his father worked on Laser Identification of in-bourne air-craft.  My reply was "No Schit"  ;D

BAE Reference here:

QuoteThe maker of the drone, BAE Systems, conducts much of its unmanned aircraft work and research in Australia, with its engineering hub based in Melbourne. BAE did not respond to a request for comment but told the Telegraph that Taranis will "have a major impact on the future of the UK military".

I joked on chat awhile ago about how it would be easy to fake a UFO with "off the shelf Quad Copters"

Interestingly it seems that message boards are lit up right with reports of what i would deem Mil Hardware floating around the Sky's in Detroit :D

They still don't match what A51 posted here though, or what Bob or John talked about :D
