QuotePLYMOUTH (CBS) – A solid piece of metal crashed through the roof of a Plymouth furniture warehouse on Thursday. Investigators say the debris appears to have fallen from the sky, but it did not come from a plane.
Michael Facchini, the owner of Michael's Wholesale Furniture Distributors found the 3-5 lb. chunk of debris on the floor of his building off Camelot Drive.
Facchini also discovered a hole in the roof of the building.
"Looked up, the ceiling had a big hole," he told WBZ-TV's Kathy Curran. "One of the workers came by and noticed the office was a mess and asked if I knew what happened then I looked and saw metal and figured it came from high above."
No one was hurt by the falling debris.
The FAA has sent an inspector to Plymouth to help investigators.
They are now tasked with trying to figure out where the metal came from.

QuotePLYMOUTH (CBS)- A Texas man may have solved the mystery of a metal object that crashed through the ceiling of a Plymouth warehouse on Thursday.
Danny Dossman, of Belton, Texas says about 6 months ago, the exact same thing happened at his family funeral home.
Dossman has the pictures to prove it.
He saw our story online and called our newsroom.
"As soon as I saw the piece of metal, it looked so similar to the piece of metal that we had found, I knew it had to be related," he told WBZ-TV's Jim Armstrong.
Police Eye Texas Man's Theory On Mystery Metal Chunk That Hit Plymouth Business (http://boston.cbslocal.com/2011/12/02/police-eye-texas-mans-theory-on-mystery-metal-chunk-that-hit-plymouth-business/)QuoteIn his case, a chunk of metal flew out of a broken tree grinder at a nearby construction site.
In the Texas case, the object flew some 800 yards. That means any grinding equipment in the entire industrial park in Plymouth could be to blame.
Plymouth police have asked WBZ-TV to forward them Dossman's pictures so investigators can have a look.
Of course, we'll keep you posted.

QuoteJERSEY CITY (WABC) -- A chunk of burning hot metal crashed through the roof of a Jersey City business this morning.
The metal was said to have fallen off some equipment at a nearby business, Reliable Wood.
The hunk of metal made a two-foot square hole in the roof of the business, Al Smith Moving at 33 Pacific Avenue, at around 9 a.m.
The metal has two holes in it and was reportedly so hot that workers at the business couldn't touch it for a half hour.
Nobody inside the business was injured.
The FAA sent their unit from Teterboro Airport and determined the object was not from a plane.
Jersey City's mayor and other city officials also responding to the scene. For a while it was not clear where the object came from.
The business is located in an industrial section of Jersey City. Workers there speculated that the object could have come from a passing plane or from space.
In the past, objects that were initially believed to be from planes have turned out to be projectiles catapulted from the ground.
In 2007, a mysterious piece of metal landed in a Bayonne home.
Initially, police believed it fell from a plane. But FAA inspectors who went to the scene determined it was not an aircraft part. Instead, the piece of metal was suspected to have flown off of light rail tracks located near the home.
Reliable wood products officials claim their equipment is routinely inspected but metal fatigue could have caused the freak event. They add the piece was hot from the friction created in the process of chopping wood into mulch.
The metal was intially a source of mystery but once its origins were located everyone was feeling blessed no one was hurt.

Metal that fell through C'ville roof came from landscaping machineryBy Eric Peterson | Daily Herald Staff
Published: 3/13/2010 QuoteThe first surprise Saturday was that a piece of metal that fell through the roof of a Carpentersville house Friday was not from an airplane but a grinding bit that flew off a machine at a nearby landscaping business.
The next surprise was that the matter is apparently being resolved without lawyers.
Dane Willman, the owner of the house on the 200 block of Orleans Street, initially suspected the metal piece to have fallen from a passing aircraft.
Willman found the 4-by-3-inch part on the floor of his bathroom beneath a hole in the ceiling. He discovered it had pierced every floor of his house up to the roof.
Carpentersville Police Cmdr. Tim Bosshart said the piece actually came from a piece of machinery that grinds asphalt and spins at 2,200 rpm.
Friday afternoon, about 400 feet away from Willman's house, workers from Illinois Wood Fiber Products, at 99 Day Lane, were using the tub grinder to turn logs into playground mulch.
"For the very first time in 16 years, a tooth came loose and flew in the opposite direction of where the tub was facing," company owner Steven Johansen said.
It's rare enough for such bits to come off at all, but when they, do they almost always land in the tub itself or no more than 20 feet away, he added.
Johansen speculated the bit must have ricocheted off a log in the grinder and flew rapidly in the other direction. Because it was already the end of the day and the bits are usually not hard to find, the search for it was put off until the next day, Johansen said.
It appeared Saturday the homeowner and Johansen were settling the matter amicably between themselves.
Johansen said he's already met with and apologized to Willman, whom he already knew casually from the neighborhood, and agreed to make all the repairs necessary to his home.
"This has just never happened before," Johansen said. "It's such a fluke. But we take ownership and responsibility for it, and we'll do the right thing."
Johansen admitted such situations aren't always resolved as amicably as has been the case with he and Willman.
"I'm just happy and proud that he's the kind of person he is and that I'm the kind of person I am," Johansen said.
As unusual a circumstance as it was, Johansen said a recurrence would be physically impossible if the contents of the tub were more dense than on the day of the accident. From now on, the company will put previously processed material in the tub to keep loosened bits from flying away.
Tony Molinaro, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration's Great Lakes Region, said the FAA was initially contacted about identifying the part but concurred with the Carpentersville police's findings.

Metal object crashes through suburban roof
Friday, March 12, 2010QuoteMarch 12, 2010 (CARPENTERSVILLE, Ill.) (WLS) -- A chunk of metal crashed right through the roof of a house in northwest suburban Carpentersville and now investigators are trying to figure out what it is and where it came from.
Homeowner Dane Willman was covering part of his roof with plastic Friday night to keep water from coming in through the hole he discovered when he got home. It was apparently created by a 3 pound steel piece about four inches long and 1.5 inches thick. He found it in his bathroom Friday afternoon, apparently from an airplane.
"I went outside and looked at the roof and saw there was a hole in the roof. And OK, things started making sense. Went back in the bathroom and saw that metal part laying on the ground and I said OK, something fell from an airplane," said Willman.

AN outback farmer is on a mission to identify a strange ball of twisted metal - purported to be fallen space junk - which mysteriously turned up on his remote property.
James Stirton of Cheepie, 130km from Charleville in southwestern Queensland, was heading out to feed cattle on his 40,500-hectare property when he came upon the bizarre-looking blackened ball.
"It was just off the road and I had been going up there every couple of days to feed cattle so I would be surprised if it had been there more than a week," Mr Stirton said.
"We got a shock when we first saw it. I had no idea what it was."
Suspecting it was a piece of space junk, Mr Stirton contacted the Aerospace Corporation - a research arm of the US Government - to get some sort of confirmation.
"I know about sheep and cattle but I don't know much about satellites," he said.
While a spokesman for Aerospace Corp. told NEWS.com.au it was still working to identify the object, aerospace industry sources who contacted Mr Stirton believe it to be part of a rocket launched at Cape Canaveral, Florida, in 1998.

Flaming Space Junk Narrowly Misses Jet
28th March 2007QuotePieces of space junk from a Russian satellite coming out of orbit narrowly missed hitting a jetliner over the Pacific Ocean overnight.
The pilot of a Lan Chile Airbus A340, which was travelling between Santiago, Chile, and Auckland, New Zealand, notified air traffic controllers at Auckland Oceanic Centre after seeing flaming space junk hurtling across the sky just five nautical miles in front of and behind his plane about 10pm last night.
According to a plane spotter, who was tuning into a high frequency radio broadcast at the time, the pilot "reported that the rumbling noise from the space debris could be heard over the noise of the aircraft.
"He described he saw a piece of debris lighting up as it re-entered (the earth's atmosphere).
"He was one very worried pilot, as you would imagine.
"Auckland is talking to (an) Aerolineas Argentinas (pilot) who is travelling (in the) opposite direction at 10 degrees further south asking if they wish to turn back to Auckland.
"They have elected to carry on at the moment.
"(It's) not something you come across everyday and I am sure the Lan Chile crew will have a tale to tell."
A spokesman for Airways New Zealand, which provides air navigation services across airspace known as the Auckland Flight Information Region, confirmed the incident this morning.
He said it occurred about 10 minutes after the Lan Chile flight had entered the Auckland Flight Information Region.
Airways New Zealand had been warned by Russian authorities almost two weeks ago that a satellite would be entering the earth's atmosphere sometime today between 10.30am and midday NZ time (6.30-8am WA time).
Airways New Zealand then provided that information to airlines and pilots that would be travelling in that region at that time.
They could then decide for themselves whether they wished to fly during that period.
"But clearly there has been a timing issue," the spokesman said.
"Either the time that was indicated to us was incorrect or the satellite de-orbited early."
Because the timing was wrong, the coordinates of where the satellite was supposed to enter the Earth's atmosphere also turned out to be incorrect.
A formal report about the incident has been logged and recordings of conversations between the pilot and air traffic controllers were expected to be handed over to investigators in the next few days, he said.
The Lan Chile flight landed safely at Auckland Airport early this morning, he said.

March 29, 2007 QuoteA jet aircraft with 270 passengers on board was within 35 seconds of crashing into a blazing Russian satellite as it was falling back to earth yesterday.
Pilots of the A340-300 Airbus suddenly saw fiery debris streaking through the midnight darkness, directly ahead of their aircraft, which was travelling at about 800km/h (500mph). The falling metal, about five miles ahead, broke the speed of sound, causing a sonic boom that drowned out the jet's four engines.
The incident happened over the Pacific Ocean, about four hours southwest of Auckland, about ten minutes after LAN Airlines' flight LA801 entered the far western reaches of New Zealand's oceanic flight information region.
Two Australian aviation buffs listening in to flight communications heard the obviously shaken captain of the South American aircraft make contact with New Zealand air traffic controllers to inform them of what had happened.

NASA - Hayabusa Spacecraft Returns Asteroid Artifacts From SpaceQuoteScientists involved with the first space mission attempting to sample asteroid surface material and return to Earth, have confirmed presence of particles collected from a small container aboard the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Hayabusa spacecraft.
On June 14, 2010 (local time), Hayabusa landed in the remote Woomera Test Range in South Australia, concluding a remarkable mission of exploration -- one in which NASA scientists and engineers played a contributing role.
Initial research from an electron microscope reveals about 1500 grains identified as rocky particles, and judged to be of extraterrestrial origin from the asteroid. Their size is mostly less than 10 micrometers. Handling these grains requires very special skills and techniques. JAXA is developing the necessary handling techniques and preparing the associated equipment for further analyses.

Stardust: A Mission With Many Scientific SurprisesQuoteThe primary goal of the Stardust mission was to collect samples of a comet and return them to Earth for laboratory analysis. Comets are ancient bodies of frozen ice and dust that formed beyond the orbit of the most distant planet. They were expected to contain materials that the solar system formed from, preserved in ice for billions of years. When the international team of 200 scientists began examination of the returned particles, we found that the particles were indeed ancient building blocks of the solar system but the nature and origin of the particles was quite unexpected. Before the mission, there were very good reasons to believe that we knew what comets would be made of and there was a general expectation was that the particles collected from comet Wild 2 would be mainly be dust that formed around other stars, dust that was older than the Sun. Such particles are called stardust or pre-solar grains and this was the main reason why the mission was named Stardust.

Genesis capsule crash site (NASA) The sample return capsule from NASA's Genesis spacecraft crash-landed in the Utah desert Wednesday after its parachutes failed to deploy. The capsule, containing solar wind samples collected by the spacecraft during its mission, was designed to deploy a drogue parachute and later an parafoil, allowing it to glide slowly and be retrieved in midair by a helicopter. However, neither parachute appeared to deploy and the capsule hit the surface at the Utah Test and Training Range west of Salt Lake City at about 12:00 pm EDT (1600 GMT). Project officials said a press conference Wednesday afternoon that the capsule hit the ground at about 310 kmph, nearly twice the speed originally estimated. The capsule is partially buried in the ground and suffered extensive damage. None of the pyros designed to release the capsule's parachutes fired, officials said, raising suspicions that a battery problem first noted with the capsule in late 2001, shortly after launch, may have kept the parachutes from deploying. Workers plan to remove the capsule from the crash site later today and attempt to salvage the samples contained inside.

Heads up! That's the word from NASA today (Sept. 7) given the impending re-entry of a 6.5-ton satellite through Earth's atmosphere.
The huge Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) is expected to re-enter Earth's atmosphere in an uncontrolled fall in late September or early October. Much of the spacecraft is expected to burn up during re-entry, but some pieces are expected to make it intact to the ground, NASA officials said.
The U.S. space agency will be taking measures to inform the public about the pieces of the spacecraft that are expected to survive re-entry.

A dead NASA satellite, called the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS), is falling uncontrolled toward Earth and crash in the Pacific Ocean on Saturday, Sept. 24. Agency officials are unable to pinpoint the exact time and location of the fall, but have said there is little risk of debris landing in populated areas. SPACE.com is providing full coverage of the UARS re-entry, including a look at the issues surrounding orbital debris and space situational awareness.
FINAL NASA Update (Sept. 27 PM):
"NASA's decommissioned Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite fell back to Earth at 12:01 a.m. EDT (0401 GMT) on Saturday, Sept. 24. The Joint Space Operations Center at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California has determined the satellite entered the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean at 14.1 degrees south latitude and 189.8 degrees east longitude (170.2 west longitude). This location is over a broad, remote ocean area in the Southern Hemisphere, far from any major land mass. The debris field is located between 300 miles and 800 miles downrange, or generally northeast of the re-entry point. NASA is not aware of any possible debris sightings from this geographic area.

Grooved Sphere from South Africa, 2.8 Billion Years Old
Over the past several decades, South African miners have found hundreds of metallic spheres, at least one of which has three parallel grooves running around its equator.
The spheres are of two types
"one of solid bluish metal with white flecks, and another which is a hollow ball filled with a white spongy center."
Roelf Marx, curator of the museum of Klerksdorp, South Africa, where some of the spheres are housed, said:
"The spheres are a complete mystery. They look man-made, yet at the time in Earth's history when they came to rest in this rock no intelligent life existed. The globes are found in pyrophyllite, which is mined near the little town of Ottosdal in the Western Transvaal. This pyrophyllite is a quite soft secondary mineral with a count of only 3 on the Mohs' scale and was formed by sedimentation about 2.8 billion years ago. On the other hand the globes are very hard and cannot be scratched, even by steel."
The sphere with the three parallel grooves around it are too perfect to be anything but man made. The Precambrian mineral deposit where the globes are found is dated to be at least 2.8 billion years old. At this time simple microscopic cells were all that was alive on the earth.
But this is obviously not true.
Who created or left behind these magnificent spheres. Obviously man made, and stronger than steel, what was their purpose for the people who visited and left them behind in time?
When I read this, i said"no way!" but further study showed no explanation to whether they were old or new, so it's still a mystery.
If I had to guess, it would be my theory that they are the original seeds for our DNA from wherever it came form, and the ones theyve found are the ones that didnt activate...or did they?
The new one was probably a spaceship part, a chemical tank, or some other earthly vessel, that survived the reentry, or was it?
Cheers!

Space junk threat 'critical'(http://rt.com/files/news/space-junk-critical/critical-threat-junk-space-422.n.jpg)
Published: 02 September, 2011, 18:36QuoteA NASA-sponsored report says the amount of space junk orbiting Earth is alarmingly high and may have reached a point where it could jeopardize all future space exploration.
The document, prepared by the US National Research Council, says computer models show there is a danger that collisions between pieces of space debris, which range in size from minuscule fragments to entire decommissioned boosters, could create even more space trash.
That means the situation is critical, says Donald Kessler, a retired NASA scientist who led the research.
"We've lost control of the environment," he said. "The hazard is increasing and there is a necessity to start cleaning up space.
"NASA needs to determine the best path forward for tackling the multifaceted problems caused by meteoroids and orbital debris that put human and robotic space operations at risk," Kessler added.
The US space agency monitors some 22,000 larger fragments of space junk, while some 500,000 smaller pieces are too small to be tracked.
A fast-moving piece of junk may damage a satellite or a manned spacecraft. An egg-sized metal lump moving at orbital speeds has kinetic energy similar to a speeding truck.
The International Space Station occasionally has to change its orbit to dodge the fragments. In June, the ISS crew had to evacuate into the docked Soyuz space capsule during a proximity alert.
There is no proven way for clearing the junk from the orbit, although engineers in many countries are developing solutions. The suggestions vary from micro-satellites, which would attach to junk fragments and pull them down into the atmosphere, to giant magnetic nets harvesting the dangerous debris.
The report calls for a concentrated effort to solve the problem. It would require not only cleaning technology, but also a barrage of international talks, as space-faring nations need to agree on issues such as ownership rights and the risk management.

Above is a depiction of debris in polar orbit around Earth. From the image below, it's evident how explosions of spacecraft causes even more scattered debris. Even after the end of the mission, batteries and pressurised systems as well as fuel tanks explode. This generates debris objects, which contribute to the growing population of materials in orbit, ranging from less than a micrometer to 10 centimeters or more in size.QuoteBetween the launch of Sputnik on 4 October 1957 and 1 January 2008, approximately 4600 launches have placed some 6000 satellites into orbit; about 400 are now travelling beyond Earth on interplanetary trajectories, but of the remaining 5600 only about 800 satellites are operational – roughly 45 percent of these are both in LEO and GEO. Space debris comprise the ever-increasing amount of inactive space hardware in orbit around the Earth as well as fragments of spacecraft that have broken up, exploded or otherwise become abandoned. About 50 percent of all trackable objects are due to in-orbit explosion events (about 200) or collision events (less than 10).
Officials from the space shuttle program have said the shuttle regularly takes hits from space debris, and over 80 windows had to be replaced over the years. The ISS occasionally has to take evasive maneuvers to avoid collisions with space junk. And of course, this debris is not just sitting stationary: in orbit, relative velocities can be quite large, ranging in the tens of thousands of kilometers per hour.(http://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/h/www.universetoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/580x410xsimulation_of_the_future2112_h1-580x410.jpg.pagespeed.ic.u0J4nt-5gc.jpg) (http://www.universetoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/simulation_of_the_future2112_h1.jpg)

About 40% of ground-trackable space debris come from explosions, now running at four to five per year. In 1961, the first explosion tripled the amount of trackable space debris. In the past decade, most operators have started employing on-board passive measures to eliminate latent sources of energy related to batteries, fuel tanks, propulsion systems and pyrotechnics. But this alone is insufficient. At present rates, in 20 or 30 years, collisions would exceed explosions as a source of new debris.Space Debris Illustrated: The Problem in Pictures (http://www.universetoday.com/13587/space-debris-illustrated-the-problem-in-pictures/) - Universe Today

Russia's Troubled Mars Probe Highlights Falling Space Debris Hazard(http://i.space.com/images/i/13504/i02/debris.jpg?1322258887)
QuoteIn March 2011, Robert Dunn was hiking in Moffat County, near the NW corner of Colorado. He heard a high-pitched sound that he could not identify, but it caught his attention since he was in a fairly isolated area. A short time later, he noticed a 30" diameter object on the ground within a crater about a foot deep. There was Russian writing on the object. The object was warm when he touched it, even though he was in an area with snow on the ground. It was later identified as a spherical titanium tank originating from a Russian upper stage rocket, launched earlier that year. A followup search found another, smaller sphere 34 miles to the North-East.

Space Junk, Toxic Fuel Rains Down on Siberian Region (http://www.thelivingmoon.com/41pegasus/04images/Space/sj3.jpg)

March 17th, 2008
People from the normally quiet and picturesque republic of Altai, Siberia keep their eyes on the sky when a launch occurs from the nearby Baikonur Cosmodrome, in Kazakhstan. This region is regularly littered with debris and toxic fuel from space launches, as Altai lies along the flight path of rocket launches to space. Unlike rockets launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, which shed excess stages into the Atlantic Ocean, sections from rockets launched from Baikonur crash back on land, usually landing in the Altai region of the Kazakh steppe.
Two incidents of falling debris in the past two weeks prompted farmers to file claims against the Russian space agency for damages. Four horses were reportedly killed from traces of toxic fuel in found in space debris that landed on grazing land and another 4.5 meter chunk of metal landed very close to a house.
According to the Moscow Times, the Russian Federal Space Agency and Altai authorities have designated a strip of land where rocket debris is supposed to fall. People who live in the zone are given at least 24 hours' notice of falling debris. Only those outside the zone are entitled to any compensation for damage caused by the launches.
The two recent incidents both occurred outside the zone, an official said.
Image credit: Jonas Bendiksen/Eurasianet.orgQuoteIn 2007, 27 people in the Ust-Kansky region were hospitalized with cancer-related illnesses they said were linked to contamination from falling debris. Also, in September 2007, a Proton-M rocket carrying a Japanese communications satellite malfunctioned around two minutes after takeoff, crashing near another Kazakh city, Zhezkazgan. No one was injured in the incident, but Russia paid Kazakhstan more than $2 million in compensation, after admitting that the rocket had been filled with higher-than-permissible levels of toxic heptyl fuel.
Space Junk.
In cases where there is a rocket malfunction, the procedure is for ground control to destroy it, often spreading debris outside the expected area.
People from the region say that the Soviets thoroughly cleaned up debris from the discarded stages, but clean-up efforts have scaled back considerably since the Soviet Union fell. The pictures used here are from a 2002 photo essay by Norwegian photographer Jonas Bendiksen showing the large pieces of debris laying lying around the Altai region.

A EurasiaNet Photo Essay by Jonas Bendiksen
Text by Laara Matsen
On April 16, Russia announced that it would henceforth launch military satellites at the Pletsnesk cosmodrome in northern Russia, ending the practice of launching satellites from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. This shift will deprive Kazakh children of the chance to watch some satellites take off, though Baikonur will remain the launchpad for commercial "birds" and manned missions. As these photos show, it will also spare Kazakhs the fallout, literal and otherwise, that occurs in a launch's wake.
Image credit: Jonas Bendiksen/Eurasianet.orgQuoteAll space-bound rockets consist largely of fuel tanks and booster stages that fall back to earth when spent, never reaching orbit. In landlocked Baikonur, Russia's primary launching complex in Kazakhstan, these spaceships crash to earth. This photo essay visits the areas where the supporting rockets land, and shows the people living under the flight paths who contend with flaming spaceship wrecks several times each month.
Apart from the fear of having a spaceship crash through their roofs, residents in the area complain of the ill effects of leftover toxic rocket fuel. With the relocation of Russian military launches, more than half of which currently take off from Baikonur, these people may get some relief. However, one group of people is probably sorry to see Baikonur lose business; the region's scrap metal dealers are getting rich trading metal from the rockets' titanium alloy hulls.

Another great compilation by the master himself, Zorgon!
The ooparts idea is one Ive been latched onto for years, and is the basis for my past civilization theory Ive been working on as well. True some will be false or improperly dated, but there will always be the ones that arent explainable, and it's mindblowing to wonder what they were for.
Cant imagine living where things fall from the sky in that size. wow!
As you know, the Russians are capable of launching dozens of rockets in a days time, and thats probably where big percentage of spacejunk comes from. If youve ever ridden in or driven a Russian car, you can understand the danger of everything they design.
Think of taking your neighbors child, and strapping him to the back of a bottle rocket, and shooting him off wherever he may go, pieces falling off the whole way. Never to return.
That about sums up Russian engineering in a nut shell!
Nuts bolts and duct tape if neededLOL!
