Post by: sky otter on October 06, 2013, 03:59:16 AM

ah maitake.. sheepshead mushroom..feast of the fall..good eats..hubby had two bags full before I even had the camera

from across the street on one of the neighbors oaks...they don't eat them

so of course we had to go check  our nearby tree that we got 8 off of earlier this year
but there weren't any on it

but looking around  there was one in a new spot.. a tree that had been down a few years
can you spot it.... we have never seen one growing like this

looking for some other trees this was interesting
a dead tree that had termites and the oval hole is  a pileated woodpecker.. largest known

today's forage.. mushrooms and chestnuts..yum
just had some of the chestnuts      ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Late thank you reply for these pics Otter !

One night with a cluster headache a few weeks ago (between bouts mind you) I watched a Paul Stamets Presentation.

Fungi and microbes never cease to blow my mind at how essiential they are and how little understood they are the same time!

hey you need to have those headaches checked out

and yeah the fungi are amazing things..

years ago when i was still involved they were already using some to reduce and eliminate radioative waste sites..some of the flourences..
i have wonder what eating those fruiting bodies would do..lol...but they weren'ttesting for that

Sky,

Love those chestnuts!  :)

I know the shrooms are good for ya too!
As Soma said, they are powerful medicine
also. I suppose if I look at them that way
I can get some down from time to time.

;D

Wonderful pictures Sky Otter, makes me hungry.  In my younger life I picked mushrooms  commercially and followed them year around, mainly in the PNW. Did that for about 5 years with others. We made enough to keep buying tires and gas for rigs plus, to go off to the next spot.  It was a wonderful adventure. Glad I did it.  Now I would really like to have a wonderful meal of mushrooms, miss eating them. And was really healthy. They (mushrooms) are surely mysterious. :)

ahhhhh Phedre
that  would be a great place to pick from what i understand..

when i married i had no idea that mushrooms would play such a huge part in my life
but hubby and his brother were growers....i have gotten to do every job from sweeping floors and composting to picking and selling and then into research and spawn making..it's been more than interesting...
so beneficial and so deadly

we try to get the morels in spring and the sheepshead in the fall.. otherwise it's to the store..lol

i'ld bet we know some of the same humans...
;)

Now if i could find or obtain some of the mushrooms that are being researched for headache's with great result's that would be great.  But really this thread is not about that ;)

I recall reading somewhere on the web a couple of years ago where a couple of scientist's were trialling earthworms to negate chemicals with some good effect.

Anyway I am not sure if this was the video I was watching regarding Paul Stammet's but all the same from I am now watching it seems to be along the same lines of the bioweb as hoomans call it :D

I don't feel like I wasted any time to view his presentation compared to viewing my local news website,  thats a plus in my book ;)  ;D

hey i stuck that paul staments thing on here way back..somewhere...i still think it's pretty funny

fungi are totally amazing in how they seem to be dormant and then just pop up..
but
that isn't the case at all ..they run mycelium all over the place like thread or ropes and when
certain criteria are met then a fruiting body (mushroom)  appears.

It wouldn't suprise me at all that you already posted that Vid  ;D

I was at a Big Box type store today and found a really interesting Mushroom Kit which consisted of two fibrous square's and a plastic bag for 10 bucks, which you are supoosed to soak in water and apply spore (innoculated wheat Grains) from another bag you buy for 9 bucks.   Basically the intructions said told you to soak the two pieces of woddish fibre and then apply the grain followed by making a sandwich with the grain.

The only reason I post the above is because I found the kit really cool.  Mushroom Spores on the shelf of a Big Box Store ?  Where they even give you intstruction on how to Innoculate wood of your choice to grow Shitake Mushrooms!

No Pics on this link but the prices are listed !

there are many ways to do this at home...grow mushrooms

and i think i may have put my recipe back somewhere about shii take (wood mushroom)
in the spring when the asparagus is producing..the combo of asparagus and shiitake
and a little butter in a skillet..ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh really to die for taste..big yum
but i have to go to the store and buy my shiitake..sigh...
when you have grown these things you really do appreciate just a pound from the store
even at the ungodly prices they charge

short and funny

really good vid on this type of kit....one of my projects was getting the optimum recipe (and flow..we worked with huge blenders for production) for the these types of bags
but we sold to farms for production that looked like what you saw in the first short vid
not individuals

another way that's been around longer..and takes space and time for a good production..but even then the varibles are many

Wow thanks for those vids Otter!  ;)

I watched them all and still gelt amazed at how good Taiwan Sheetake (swear filter mate LOL) look dried compared to the same mushroom from China.

A couple of years ago I watched an amazing DVD in regards to the whole process of mushroom cultivation for the home DIY'er.

I think it was this site, but not 100% completeley sure, 98% sure though :)

When I see Fungi i don't think food let's eat it!  I think a healthy soil system :D
