YouTube is increasing its efforts to generate more revenue with its most popular videos producers. Thousands of YouTube creators will now be able to launch paid channels, which charge a monthly subscription fee of $0.99 or more.
The paid channel initiative began in May as a pilot program with a few dozen accounts, including popular brands like Sesame Street and the Professional Golf Association. Now any video creator who has 10,000 subscribers and has been verified by YouTube will be able to set up a new paid channel and charge a fee for access to their content. Creators can set their own subscription rates, though YouTube has final authority to determine pricing. Every paid channel will offer an initial 14-day free trial.

A YouTube spokesman confirmed that the revenue split between YouTube and creators for subscription channels is similar to the model used for advertising revenue, with creators keeping the majority of the money. YouTube does not disclose the exact percentage of this advertising split, but it has been widely reported to be 55 percent for creators and 45 percent for YouTube.
The Google-owned video platform has invested heavily to improve the quality of its content as it tries to lure advertisers away from television. The company has spent at least $300 million in the production and marketing of a slate of 100 original channels in the last two years. YouTube also has production studios for creators to use in Los Angeles, London and Tokyo. A fourth will open in New York in 2014.
YouTube declined to disclose the number of subscribers for any of the existing paid channels, but over the summer some channel operators said user response had been tepid, according to Variety. A YouTube spokesman said these are still very early days for the initiative.
The original version of this story said YouTube creators with 10,000 subscribers could "convert" their channels to paid channels. In fact, these users must create new channels to charge a subscription
Oh well, another case of the users being turned on. UT is what it is because of the members. They had enough money to spend 300 million? That says something no? Time for a new station to come up and take over. Deuem
I foresee a competitive site springing forth that is free like YT is now. I anticipate a large migration.
I read about this move a few weeks ago. An overwhelming majority of YouTube will stay free, what it does is set up the opportunity for businesses and entrepreneurs to set up channels with content people will pay for if they're interested. Say you're a small engine mechanic. You could set up a channel that covers all the common breakdowns of lawnmower engines and how to diagnose and repair them. Will you make money? Maybe. Maybe not. But it allows you to try.
Charging for viewing. Another money grab from Google.
If they stop all the advertising and tracking, I am all for it, otherwise they can get stuffed.
There are too many peeps trying to make a living out of screwing others for their hard earned money.
There should be a law against it!
(There is, but it only applies to huge mega business, the law is for the rich)
We already get adverts and are forced to watch the first few seconds.
They tried at first making us view the whole ad's but I assume I wasn't the only one who automatically killed the you tube windows that did that, for a while I hardly watched any YT, then the ten second deal came along.
When I am feeling snarky I like to close and re-open the window until I get my content without adverts.
The sooner the rest of you wise up to advertisers and their nasty little ways the better.
Advertising is the finest, most refined "mind control" on the planet, and if you want to try and keep yours under your own control, you do best avoiding it. Any one ever come across the concept of "depth manipulation"? It's just plain evil. (In a shiny package)
Good product always sells by word of mouth. The only sort of advertising that is worth consideration.
FB.
BUT if you can charge for youtube training, then maybe that could be of some use to US!!

I think you missed the point :D
"Thousands of YouTube creators will now be able to launch paid channels, which charge a monthly subscription fee of $0.99 or more."
All those video makers that already have paid ads in their videos will jump at this. You forget that those ads give money to the video maker. The more views, the more they make.
You don't understand the POWER of MONEY :P Well at least not the part about how EASY it is to make Pegasus really needs to get busy making good videos

I really need to stop procrastinating and get busy adding ad words to the website. That free lance agent already got me some, and Google will give me $100.00 just to sign up. Globat my server will give me 250.00 to sign up via them
Adsense Check for $132,994.97 ? Nothing to sneeze at That would pay off my mortgage and car loan in one swoop

For the benefit of the film maker doing the work :P

Advertising works or they wouldn't do it. While it is annoying, the fact is that the vast majority live for ads. Gotta see that new purse or latest video game while its HOT...

Isn't a buyesr choice? I see thousands of ads daily. I tune them out... but every now and then one catches my eye and I click... like tickets to a KOTO drum performance that was here in Vegas for only two days. I would never have seen that if it wasn't for that ad
QuoteThere should be a law against it!
There is... 'false advertizing' and you can make a MINT by suing them. There are plenty lawyers out there willing to work for a percentage of the win :D

Problem is no one is meeting face to face and talking :P And if I write you an email that says "Hey... this stuff is GREAT" am I not advertising? (but not getting paid for it :P )
people complain about not having enough money... then they get bitter and attack the system for their woes... instead of learning how to use the system to better their own situation.
How many people spend endless hours posting stupid comments on endless pretty pictures and bogus news stories on TWITTER?
Instead of wasting that time why not...

Every few days I will post one of my Ebay or Etzy items I have for sale on Facebook... usually within days someone buys it or at least favorites it :D
The UFO whistle blowers have all (save Bob and John :P ) that people will gladly pay for the entertainment of listening to them. Debunkers like Phil Plait and Jim Oberg gave up careers to sell their version of reality as vehemently as the believers. Stanton Freidmann gave up Nuclear Physics to sell UFO stories :P and sure the Charlatans saw the easy money and pounced, but the buyer is paying for their choice of entertainment... just like you would go to a movie of your choice.
Its a free country and there is a sucker born every minute :P
this needs embroided on a pillow.. a turism .

and there is more than one way....
I already pay for bs.its called dish network.then i pay for five gig.i will not pay for more bs.
I'm getting the impression PRC peeps are not getting the fact that this is just the tech evolution and way for small businesses, websites, individuals to make money and pay bills.
Can you make entertaining videos? Do you have skills others want to learn? Can you educate? This is an opportunity to share and charge a low fee to add income. So many people here are bi%ching about being broke and low on money. OK. Here's an opportunity for those willing to do the brain work and take a chance. Plenty of people out there who might throw you a buck to see what you got. Bucks add up. If you deliver, they really add up.
I'll lay money down on 5-10 years from now paid YouTube will just be a slice of the pie, the rest will still be free.
People, read carefully and then re-read it; Amy, you made your vid awhile back to get your points out; your work on TAP is a good example of what is available; do videos on Tap, say 10 minutes at a time, then charge .99 a month to subscribe to them; if you do good vids and people are interested enough in your ideas, then that token .99 cents to watch them won't cause them to bat an eye and put coins in your purse...
if you so choose; or you can post them for free and not make anything...
money can be a good thing, making money can be, too; if you don't abuse others to acquire it...

money is not a bad thing and it is the current system in use..
regardless of the system in use there will always be
those who learn and use the system to their advantage
those that learn and use the system to others disadvantage
those who have no idea they could use the system
and
and those who cry about there being any system at all
so like Z said.. figure it out and use it to your advantage..you don't have to hurt others
by use the current system
:o

Though the greed side - or more to the point, the OMG I have to play the game side - is very tempting...and may win out if I can get a cameraPerson with a camera again...there is a part of Me that stands aghast at the thought of asking People to pay for a gift I would give Them, and one that is getting rid of the very thing I am asking - exchange to survive - to boot!
If the cameraPerson and camera willing to perform in that capacity should again cross My path, I will likely go that route. For Thor's sake. [smile]
Right now most instructional videos are free of charge and the ads pay the bill. Now all of these people will try and charge and the free aspect goes out the window. Yea great if you want to try and make money. You can also open your own web site to do that.
The entire idea of UT was that it was to be free. free to the viewers. So now it is going the way of cable TV & Digital TV.
There was once a time with cable TV, where there were no ads. Everyone jumped on it. You could watch a movie straight through and never have a break. Once everyone turned to cable they had you and changed the rules. Same with digital TV. Now we start off paying and then they make us pay again within.
UT swore it would be a free site when it first started. If you wanted to make money you would have to go somewhere else.
If you make good videos it will be a cash cow. If your low on cash and need that info you will have to go somewhere else.
I am not sorry, they are going for the buck and forgeting the past. Everysingle video on UT should be free. If they want to start another site like $tube then go ahead. Cashtube could then have what ever they want. All videos would need to be paid for.
What does this do for linked videos. Will there be a commision fee paid to Z if a $tube is posted? I guess $tubes won't be able to be linked. Like my digital TV, they put a second cost on every single movie that is good, even if it is 50 years old. When I got it they said movies were free. Yea about 25% are free, all the junk. So they all found a second way to make money once they got you.
I stand against UT selling videos, They should create a paid site.
