USA Severe Cold weather ..Swirling 'Polar Vortex' Over Northern US.
Are they messing with the weather yet again !...
Could see coldest temps in 20 years..
Just watched the News in the UK on the BBC with ref to abc news USA..
and it says about a severe cold weather spell from the Artic with Temperatures as cold as - 65 in wind Chill in some places... :o
God help the Homeless or anyone getting caught outside or unable to warm themseleves..
A whirling onslaught of frigid air, known as a polar vortex, moves menacingly over the northern United States in a new photo from a weather satellite in orbit.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's GOES-East satellite snapped the telling photo today (Jan. 6) at 11:01 a.m. EST (1601 GMT). In the image, the polar vortex is pushing southward over western Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota, blasting half of the continental United States with chilly Arctic air.
The polar vortex is a sprawling area of low pressure typically found over both the North and South poles, according to NASA. The northern polar vortex typically circulates from west to east in the Arctic during winter, but a high-pressure system parked over Greenland and Canada has pushed the cold air into the United States. This is causing air temperatures to drop across the northern U.S., and the Arctic air is being felt as far south as Atlanta.
Yesterday, the swirling polar vortex caused a staggering temperature difference of 140 degrees Fahrenheit (77 degrees Celsius) across the country, from North Dakota to Florida. The polar vortex is expected to move northward back over Canada near the end of the week, NASA officials said in a statement.
The GOES-East satellite also captured a frontal system along the U.S. East Coast

How would we know when the next ice age has started - immediately, 1 winter passing, 2 winters passing..........??
Hope you guys & Girls are Ok and can deal with it...
Knowing that they can control the weather, its hard to say if they aim to raise the countries heating bills or if it is just a natural cycle ...
If it is start of a new Ice-age...Maybe If we see 3 to 5 years in a row.
Usually when the US gets Cold weather we get in in Europe soon after.. :-\
QuoteHow would we know when the next ice age has started - immediately, 1 winter passing, 2 winters passing..........??
I do think that in WarToad's OP about the tunnel blockage, they do mention that at some point in the past, a 3,000-foot-thick ft sheet of ice covered that entire area of Seattle and 50 miles to the south. This ice sheet must have been a part of the last ice age. My guess is, we probably know less about how an "ice age happens" on this Earth, than most are willing to admit. We know it gets warm for a little while, and then we know it gets cold for a lot longer that it was warm. We likely know little more than that, other than being able to show from ice cores when these cycles have occurred approximately.
What if this is the start of the ice age? Would people actually have some time to prepare for its "beginning" - only the "beginning", because they do last many 10's of thousands of years??
As some of the reports say, it is colder in some of the US northern areas than it is in places at the poles. If these temps remained consistent, it could/would get icy preeeeeeeeety quick!!
After some of our (& P.R.C related ) previous discussions..it was suggested on one TV Horizon program that I seen 5 to 10 years ago , that we could see Ice age conditions in less than 20 years...
And the Gulf & Jet stream has been moved further south for some time more often...who knows !
As the Human race goes , I don't think we have not had that many times in our past to experience it..In the past there was little education if any...At least today we know a lot more..but it may be just as hard to predict it even with our technology..
If and when it arrives, we may just not realise it or know it is the start until its too late..
Did I read recently that the Suns Magnetic Poles Very recently flipped !
If so I wonder if there any similar connections in past cold spells or past Ice ages !

Well, I am in Texas which is pretty far south of the worst temps, but the low here tonight is forecast to be 17 degrees, and it is 19 right now, @ 8:45 PM. But many of the areas north of Texas in the country's mid-section presently have temps in the "minus" degrees.
No, not many of us are actually prepared for extended periods of cold with alternative heat needed, if electricity is "off". And then food availability could quickly get to be a problem too, if a "no-power" situation occurred.
Did I read recently the Suns Magnetic Poles Very recently flipped !
Yes, that was a subject of discussion here. The flipping is a normal reoccurring thing. One of the not normal things about this flip of the Sun's poles is - - - normally the poles usually change their + - reasonably close to the same time frame of the Solar Maximum. This time, and with the last I heard, only the North pole has flipped, in May 2013, and the other has not flipped yet.
The pole changes take place at the end of the peak cycle of the Sun, which happens about every 11 years. Also as noted in prior discussions, the 2013's cycle solar peak turned out to be one of the weakest observed in the past century. So, who knows what influence our star's activities are having upon our changing weather conditions""
Yes, I think if one can , it may be wise to try and stock up on some things just in case...No harm in taking precaution early on in case cold spell lasts a while..
With ref to weather in recent years...I loose track, although I recall a few years ago was the worst Day in the UK for 100 years..Not sure about the USA or world as a whole.
But since 2010 the article below wrote in 2011 said 2010 was a warmer year for the world in general, but not in the UK that was colder than normal...in the UK I think we have had colder spells than norm for the last 3 years and if we get it again as I think we will after the USA gets it, we usually will do...so it may be 4 years in a row.
Could do with some yearly statistics for last 10 to 20 years for both USA and UK/Europe..
If I recall , We did previously before 2010 have 10 years of relatively milder years & winters..

Thanks for reminding us of the details on the Suns Pole Flip !
Yes I recall the 11 year cycle !...
So I wonder if we tend to be getting some variation in our weather patterns based on this cycle...although not always right from the start of it..
Again it would be of interest to compare past 100 years of data in connection to the 11 yr cycle..I suspect we may find it somewhere on the Net ,if we get time !

Northern Minnesota colder than Mars this week(http://minnesotabrown.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/range_mars.jpg)
This looks a little like Mars. It's actually Hibbing Taconite, which was for a time colder than Mars.QuoteIt's cold in northern Minnesota.
How cold is it? It is reported that temperatures in Duluth and surrounding region of northern Minnesota have been colder than Mars this week, according to reports from NASA's Mars rover Curiosity on the Red Planet.
Embarrass and International Falls were both under 40 below (F) Thursday night, while the Mars rover reported a mere 26 below. Temperatures at least that cold are forecast for Sunday and Monday.
In other words, a planet 140 million miles further from the Sun than Earth was warmer than parts of northern Minnesota last night. Granted, there are caveats. The Mars rover is close to the Martian equator right now. (The average temperature on Mars is 80 below, Fahrenheit). Still, there it is.
It's going to be a little warmer today — perhaps even above zero. Then another week-long cold snap is expected, making us once again colder than Mars.

Living here in Southern Ontario, I can tell you this is one bad ass storm. Been a long time since we have had one this bad. Looking at temp map of N America, it is as cold here as it is in southern US right now. (As far south as Nashville TN) At least we are prepared to battle old man winter up here, I feel bad for the homeless. Hope they can find shelter to get through this.

That is a very interesting point you make Astro in regards to Human Experience and History as for the most part down here in the southern hemisphere the icy region better known as antartica really has only been explored in the last 100 odd years enmasse.
I posted a documentry here awhile back in regards to Aussie Aboriginals. The experts in that doco seem to think that they went through an ice age which changed their diet quite dramatically.
I would hap hazard a guess that regions closer to the pole's/jet steams are experiencing kinda odd weather as it seem's other parts of australia are business as usual ? :-\
...and meanwhile, we in europe have had the warmest January on record, average 14 C during the day, and still not freezing at night.
I can walk about outside in just a T-shirt :o
They say the cold front's moving this way, so i guess temp is going to plummet dramatically.
Trouble is, half the trees have gone into bloom already, they think it's spring!.... :o
Have they been playing that HAARP again ???
Thats interesting PWM, as my over wintered Chili's are taking so long to ripen. I usually in all case's find Chili plants that i have grown to really mature early and ripen in december. This the plant's are growing like mad due to some amazing fertilizer I bought a few month's ago yet the plant's havn't had a couple of weeks of solid temp's to bring out the lush red hotness! >:( :o
Yes, seasons all gone to hell it seems ::)

looks like the wind did it for us...sigh..but we have to go gather the plastic that is everywhere right now

wouldn't be too bad out there if it wasn't for the wind...NASSS-TEE

Thing is people do not understand this "Global Warming" thing
Global warming is a changes of a few degrees over the AVERAGE temp taken on a global average over a year. A 5 degree change over that time frame is enough to make an ice age.
Al Gore is WRONG that mankind is causing it...
BUT Global Warming is real. It is a natural cycle.
Global warming also allows for sudden extreme cold snaps and other weird weather like we are seeing around the world
Glaciers, mountain snow banks and polar ice caps have been getting smaller each year. This adds fresh water to the ocean, which in turn changes ocean current temperatures, which in turn drive super storms, which in turn trigger an ice age
The Movie "A Day After Tomorrow" though exaggerated a little, shows EXACTLY how this mechanism works... and more importantly HOW FAST the change comes.
Don't forget that they found Mastodons frozen in the ice still chewing their last meal
The Ice Core samples taken at Lake Vostok, Antarctica reveal a 415,000 year temperature record. Ice core samples like tree rings do not lie nor have a political agenda. And 415K years is long before we came along with greenhouse gases and cow farts.
Look at the graph... you will notice that the Earth's warm periods are small compared to very long cold periods... you will notice the SHARP incline and drastic change when the pendulum swings... and you will notice where we are on the timeline
(http://www.thelivingmoon.com/47brotherthebig/04images/Antarctica/415k-year-temp-graph.jpg)
Chemtarilas, Geoengineering, the Doomsday Seed Vault and even GMO plants... these are all an attempt to delay this or to survive it (despite the evil money grubbers cashing in on it :P )
My advice? Move south, get a wood stove, and stock up on essentials that are not perishable and firewood :D

Freeze! Escaped Convict Surrenders In The Cold.
Hard to say if this guy made the right decisions after he escaped from prison... but it may have been unfortunate timing on his behalf....Or maybe he just had no other choices at the time and he could not think or see any alternative due to the severe cold... :-\
Sub-zero temperatures in Kentucky have forced an escaped prisoner to give up his short-lived life on the run.
Robert Vick, who fled from a minimum security facility in Lexington on Sunday, surrendered to authorities on Monday after temperatures in the region plunged in the freezing weather sweeping across the States.
Vick walked into a motel and told the clerk he wanted to turn himself in and escape the Arctic air, Lexington police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said.
Wind chill readings in Lexington were -29C (-20F) on Monday.
"This was definitely of his own volition," Ms Roberts said. "It's cold out there, too cold to run around. I can understand why the suspect would turn himself in."

Seeker, I would have to head for the hills, get out to the inlaws. If I could make it there, we are all set. So I need my SUV and 1/4 tank of gas, 2 hour ride at 30kph. Depending on how much time I had to react and who is in the way would be more of a problem.
We have a million folks in the region. They might all think the same thing. And then there is human nature. Do people help each other or bump them off and take their stuff. When it comes to starvation people change.
The good thing is we are a lot higher in elevation now, over the 1,000 ft mark and also in an area that should never be targeted by any other country. No military bases here that I can find. Just mountains everywhere. In those mountains are bores [wild pigs], monkeys, snakes, goats, wild birds and lots of vegatation you can eat. All the mountains leak fresh water. I'm sure that most of the locals would go out of their way to either help me or eat me. Must be careful. Deuem is not on the menu.

Frost quakes a real possibility, geologist says
By MICHAEL ROKNICK, The Sharon Herald
Posted: 01/24/14, 4:54 PM EST |
SHARON, Pa. (AP) — If you heard a bang or felt the earth shake a bit Tuesday night you weren't alone.
The noise and accompanying vibration were reported from Hubbard to South Pymatuning Township.
Unlike the mysterious explosion sounds people reported hearing last summer in various parts of Mercer County, this sound was literally closer to home.
"It was like something hit the house," people said over and over again.
While he can't say with scientific certainty, geologist Lindell Bridges said he believes the sound came from a phenomenon known as cryoseisms - more commonly known as frost quakes.
"I think it's a very good possibility," Bridges said of the clamor and vibrationst. "I think that's exactly what you heard."
The president of Pure Earth Resources LLC in Sharpsville is called upon for his services in the oil, gas and mining industries. And while he never experienced a frost quake firsthand, he believes there's a strong case to be made that such an event occurred in the area.
"It's pretty uncommon for it to happen — but that doesn't mean it didn't happen," he said.
During past couple weeks frost quakes have been reported in Canada, Wisconsin, Vermont, Cincinnati and elsewhere.
Two primary elements are needed to trigger frost quakes - water saturated ground and a sharp drop in temperature. Both conditions were present; heavy rains last week soaked the ground and in recent days temperatures rapidly dropped more than 40 degrees.
Frost quakes occur mainly at night when temperatures bottom out. As the water in the ground freezes, it expands and cracks the soil, bedrock or stones around it to create room.
"It's something like an earthquake, Bridges said. "The reason you get an earthquake is stress builds up in the ground and it breaks and releases stored-up energy."
There are significant differences. Earthquakes occur a mile or two beneath the surface when fault lines shift. Frost quakes are five feet beneath the surface or closer.
"It sounds like the near surface groundwater was frozen and built up some stress and finally exceeded the stress limit and it broke just like an earthquake - only much closer to the surface," Bridges said.
Besides the sound and vibration, people have reported seeing distant flashing lights before or during frost quakes. Those likely are caused by electrical changes when rocks are compressed. Cracks and fissures may also be seen on the surface, which can range from a few inches up to a couple miles.
Bridges advised anyone who might have experienced a frost quake to check around their homes.
"I would inspect around the house to see if anything is out of order," he said. "I doubt that it would crack a foundation. But if you have a natural gas or water line and smell or see gas or water seeping, call the gas or water company. Those lines are probably deeper than any damage you might see on the surface - but it's better to be safe than sorry."
Mercer County 911 said dispatchers had not received any reports of loud sounds or damage.

'Ice quakes' hit Wisconsin: Deep booms heard in the middle of the night cracks open in frozen ground
Ice quakes occur when water sinks into the soil, freezes and expands
The expansion causes a popping sound that can sound like gunshots and even feel like an earthquake

Here is one of them
The winter that will not end!
Wouldn't ya know
How convenient that a propane shortage erupts just as the polar plunge starts. Wisconsin, michigan and probably Minnesota are under a propane shortage with people being gouged on what little propane their suppliers will deliver only to customers with cash in hand.
Started a couple weeks ago as temps went below zero. Right now its -5 here and was colder last couple a days. Folks up north are in a panic with this polar vortex propane shock wave.
Seems propane was 1.99, then 3.99 and now I read 6.99 a gallon with suppliers limiting the fill amount and must have cash in hand to dump.
They opened get warm shelters but that doesn't help the frozen pipes. This is no coincidence.
The Gov walker did a state of emergency and waved the weight limit for propane trucks and waved the driver service hours so trucks can bring in the propane and deliver.
Its been dam cold here and well below zero for many days and nights. Somebodies doing something with the weather and manipulating heating demand.
Can't find the previous thread I posted to, however to expand on my previous question: "Are we sure it's all natural?..
Yesterday in Birmingham, UK, we had a rain storm, followed by a snow storm, followed by bright sunshine.
Yea, if that's normal, I'll eat my socks.
4 Hour time frame.

As far as I understand it, we cannot really know it, as the weather we get is always a reaction to something that happened before, somewhere (mostly to the west in the northern hemisphere and to the east in the southern hemisphere), some time before.
QuoteYea, if that's normal, I'll eat my socks.
I don't know if it's normal or not, but I don't see any reason for it not to be possible.
If I'm not mistaken, snow occurs when rain passes a layer of air that is below the freezing point and doesn't get heat enough to melt until it reaches the ground, so it's perfectly possible that rain is followed by snow.
Sunshine after rain or snow is also normal, specially if we are talking about cumulus clouds, that, although big, have lots of space between them.
But this is just in theory, as I have never seen snow in my life. :)

I appreciate the theory of it all..But in reality it was bizarre.
The USA continues with its cold spells...
Yesterday Hail stones & snow....in the UK
Today 100 MPH winds.
I was watching a TV program earlier that showed the storms , clouds and wind patterns coming across the Atlantic which was said to be due to the Gulf or jet stream....It seemed quite severe and may be some of worst weather patterns that I have ever seen to be coming towards the UK..
The UK has severe flooding around the coast and around the River areas from the Midlands to the South Coast...
The UK Government are being asked what are they doing about the Flooded homes..
One has to question is this natural or created by the Globalists weather machines..
OR The Giant Sunspots that have recently occurred..
Or is it Mercury going retrograde or the other planets effecting our weather !
One weather expert says its down to weather conditions created on the other side of the World where it has been very hot and this has created a lot of humidity to go into the atmosphere that in turn that moisture has been carried by winds across the planet ! or something like that ...

Yes, that's how it works.
The weather the UK got today is the result of how the weather was in the middle of the north Atlantic two days ago, that was the result of how the weather was in the north of the US/Canada two days before, etc., etc.
Ok guys, more of the same - something different: Poor man's polar vortex to make shocking summer return in eastern U.S. next week
This an interesting article is talking about unseasonably chilly air is headed for parts of the northern and northeastern U.S at the height of summer early next week" - 10 to 30 degrees below average! That is kinda significant, even if it is not real cold! Daily record temps are expected in some ares of the Plains and Great Lakes.
I continue to wonder about when the real entrance into the long term cooling period will begin........or are we already in its beginning??
Exerpt from Washington Post.com - "What's behind this unusual winter weather pattern primed for the dog days of summer? A lot of it is simply chance (randomness), but Weather Underground's meteorologist Jeff Masters says Japan's typhoon Neoguri is playing a role in the pattern's evolving configuration:
....the large and powerful nature of this storm has set in motion a chain-reaction set of events that will dramatically alter the path of the jet stream and affect weather patterns across the entire Northern Hemisphere next week. Neoguri will cause an acceleration of the North Pacific jet stream, causing a large amount of warm, moist tropical air to push over the North Pacific. This will amplify a trough low pressure over Alaska, causing a ripple effect in the jet stream over western North America, where a strong ridge of high pressure will develop, and over the Midwestern U.S., where a strong trough of low pressure will form.
What amazes me most about the pattern is not so much the forecast temperatures, but the uncanny similarities in the weather patterns over North America seen in both the heart of winter and heart of summer. All of the same features (refer to the map at the top of this post) apparent in January are on the map in mid-July: low pressure over the Aleutians (blue shading), a large hot ridge (yellow and red shading) over the western U.S., the huge cold low or vortex over the Great Lakes (blue and green shading), and then the ridge over northeast Canada (yellow and red shading).
It's not at all clear what this means or what, if anything, it portends".

Yesterday it was a mild and very tolerable 70 some degrees. Later at night it was a clear moon lit night with low humidity and 48 degrees. I was walking in the moon light wearing my jacket and hat. Lovely evening with stars and moonshine.
well the part that caught my eye was this

Poor man's polar vortex approaches parts of U.S.

Call it the ghost of the polar vortex, the polar-vortex sequel or the polar vortex's revenge. Meteorological purists may tell you it's not a polar vortex at all.
However you choose to refer to the looming weather pattern, unseasonably chilly air is headed for parts of the northern and northeastern United States at the height of summer early next week.
Bearing a haunting resemblance to January's brutally cold weather pattern, a deep pool of cool air from the Gulf of Alaska will plunge into the Great Lakes early next week and then ooze toward the East Coast.
Of course, this is July, not January, so temperatures forecast to be roughly 10 to 30 degrees below average won't have quite the same effect.
But make no mistake, in parts of the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest getting dealt the chilliest air, hoodies and jeans will be required. Highs in this region could well get stuck in the 50s and 60s — especially where there is considerable cloud cover.
Wednesday morning's lows might drop into the 40s over a large part of the central United States. Remember, this is July!
The heart of the chilly air mass will probably just skirt the East Coast, but temperatures are likely to be about 10 degrees below normal. Highs could struggle to reach 80 in Washington on Tuesday and Wednesday, with widespread lows in the 50s (even 40s in the mountains).
Note that, as with any extended forecast, there is some uncertainty here. If the cool air mass loses some punch, highs might still reach 80 to 85 around the District of Columbia, with lows in the 60s rather than the 50s.
The pattern might last only a few days but will probably set some records, especially around the Plains and Great Lakes — where water temperatures are still depressed from the frigid winter in which ice remained on Lake Superior into June.
What's behind this unusual winter weather pattern primed for the dog days of summer? A lot of it is simply chance (randomness), but Weather Underground meteorologist Jeff Masters says Japan's typhoon Neoguri is playing a role in the pattern's evolving configuration:

It's not at all clear what this means or what, if anything, it portends. Weather patterns cycling through a certain circulation regime can repeat (and we've seen this pattern multiple times since November and December), but with El Niño forecast to develop, the global configuration of weather systems is likely to change.
As news of this cool-air episode breaks, you might notice meteorologists bickering over whether this is a "polar vortex" event or not. For their part, several National Weather Service offices are using the term.
But Larry Cosgrove, an energy meteorologist, says that while the looming cool air mass is "admittedly impressive," calling it a polar vortex is hogwash.
"It's insane," Cosgrove wrote on his Facebook page. "Poor wording combined with misunderstanding of the term make a mockery out of synoptic meteorology."
Cosgrove's argument is that the air mass doesn't meet the "polar vortex" standard — its pressure isn't low enough and the air isn't sufficiently cold and truly Arctic in origin (i.e. not below freezing at 5,000 feet). "[On] TWO counts we fail to reach the standard for calling such an upper low a vortex," he said.
The middle road might be the best one: Call it a "poor man's polar vortex."
According to the weather man here, a polar plunge will blow into green bay this tuesday with temps like 66 degrees for july when it should be 80 something. It was 48 degrees a few nights ago and probably be just as low when the plunge hits.
It's been chilly here in ND, highs of the day either not breaking 70 or just barely above. It's a good 10 to 15 degrees cooloer than normal temps this time of year.
