Title: Home Telescope Celestron C8 Project Progress
Post by: LSWONE on March 13, 2014, 08:43:42 PM
Hi Team,

Not sure if it is best to start a thread but I don't want to hijack anyone's thread. My purpose of this is to share any good footage and Pics I can acquire via my new to me toy.

I found a used Celestron C8 scope with a clock type fork mount from an older Celestron.  It did not have any eyepieces, diagonal, tripod, or an equatorial wedge. I purchased a lens, 2X Barlow, and the Diagonal a few days later. The guy at the shop had an older Tripod he wanted to sell me but realized it was  broken so he let me have it! he only had new Celestron Wedges but that was $400!

The Wife was with me and was looking at me like oh H*ll no! He went in back and found an old Meade wedge to show us more or less what they looked like. He said he would sell me that one for $40 but the bolt pattern did not match up.

I bought it anyway and I currently have it at the machine shop down the hall getting drilled out!

I have a few webcams laying around so I decided to retrofit one with an old cheap eyepiece to see what kind of video I can get.

Here is the scope.

Here are the pics of the eyepiece retrofit.

Here is a quick video holding an iPhone to the eyepiece. It looks much clearer with the eye than what the phone captures since the phone wants to focus on the eyepiece lens glare.

I will post more as I progress with it.

Very cool!

If thats the result of only putting a iphone in front of the eyepiece! ;)  :D
When whatching birds some people attach a high defenition pocket camera in front of the scopes they use. Those results are amazing.
Can you do the same? Or is it the goal to use the webcam?
hehe, I am curious 8)

Thanks Lunica!

I am not married to the webcam setup. I want to try a few different setup a to see what can give the clearest results. My ideal setup is to have a 24" display next to the scope giving me a better view in realtime. I can do this with my HD video camera or webcam/laptop setup.

Sweet Score mate!

I just subbed to your channel so I will no doubt love following your progress as one day later in life I would very much like to get setup with a scope and the bands the eye can't see along with the one I can!

I'm not sure if you ever seen this youtube channel by a fellow called UFOLOU here in Melbourne Oz? I do plug this channel from time to time as he does everything on a budget, and he does find some tasty morsel's without all the "PTB aliens are going to enslave us" kinda stuff :D

He at time's describe's some of his low budget stuff in some of his comments etc.

PS I never got that dirt jumper as it's hard to find one for right price here that may not have bunged up LOL.  Been thinking a BMX new would be a better option for cheap mate! lol  ;)

Thanks Somamech!

I need to find out what camera Bill Bryson is using. My scope is a few revs older than the one he is using and the lenses are not much lower magnification. most of his zooming is done by his webcam. I have been listening to his videos and have not heard him mention what model webcam. Just heard him mention his expensive setup with a $60 webcam.

Thanks for pointing me at UFO Lou. I will check him out and see what gear he is using.

As for the bike, I got on mine about a week ago and it just reminded me how out of shape I'm really in.  ;D

I would stay away from any type of digital zoom and go as optical as you can. In the mean time I will watch and droul. Even if I had the hubble on my roof I couldn't see anything so anything you will post is heaven sent.

Ahh maybe he is using this dude!

From this link I got this:

QuoteI show you my telescope and lenses in these videos - Here is a list of specific videos that show my setup... The basic setup now use is a Celestron Nexstar 8SE telescope - Logitech C910 camera - TeleVue Panoptic 19.0 mm eyepiece - TeleVue 2.5x Powermate 1.25 inch Barlow - Vixen Flip Mirror Diagonal - Zhumell SCT Dual Speed Telescope Focuser - motor controller and adapters for remote telescope focuser ... Note that I have two focusers on my telescope and BOTH are motorized with JMI focuser kits. My primary focuser is the one that came with the telescope. I use the Zhumell as a permanent 2 inch extender adapter for my camera mounts. I encourage you to explore my videos and my website www.billbryson-astronomer.com. My website has a lot of slideshows of my photos taken from my videos. Also NOTE that my YouTube videos are best watched at 1080p full screen. When I started out I was just using 720p but later I ended up with 1080p 20fps. Also note that I do the moon in full color... The ONLY camera that currently works is the Logitech C910... I designed a camera mount with the help of my friend Mike and we had it made up at a machine shop. This item is NOT available for sale. The mount could easily be made with LEGO bricks..

Thanks Somamech!!!! You rock! yes that's the same guy. I need to get that webcam now.

Hi Duem,
I plan on getting improving the lens magnification as I get more play money from the Boss and I will be sharing more pics and video as I find to time to capture.

Hi Back,

Sure don't mind sharing. I would like more people to get cameras pointed to sky if possible!

Celestron C8 with motorized fork clock mount 275. Craig's sheet.

Old Meade equatorial wedge 40. (needed new holes drilled to match Celestron)

Original Celestron tripod FREE from telescope store because it has 2 points broken on leg and support brace! I fixed it in 10 minutes with a drill, and metal coat hangar!

New diagonal, new 2X Barlow lens, new 25mm eyepiece, 91 from telescope store.

Just picked up the HD webcam for 55 on the bay.
The 15mm eyepiece (Astro-Tech used) 40 from the bay.

Hope to have my machine shop make me the mount for the camera. That will probably cost me 3 lunches for the expert Machinest.

Hope to have some video to share in the next 2 weeks!

All prices are USD.
