Title: No longer need to show MOT and Insurance when renewing Car Tax in the U.K
Post by: astr0144 on May 02, 2014, 12:39:22 AM
Don't know if a large % of drivers in the U.K are yet aware of this as yet. I only just found out !  :o

First no more discs in the windscreen and now for the first time in 40 years you won't have to hunt down an insurance certificate to buy your car tax either.

Insurance check has been in place for 40 years
Car tax discs axed last week after almost 100 years
Insurance now automatically checked against central database
Government says it will slash red tape for drivers.

There are some advantages with this, but what may be the disadvantages I wonder !   Like many things it may depend upon ones financial situation...or maybe one health ...or other possible factors that may prevent one from renewing relevant documentation.

At one time if your Insurance ran out, as long as you had a valid Tax Disc.. you could still leave it on the Road without Insurance...

Now as far as I know , if you do not renew ones car insurance,  certainly if one drives the car uninsured...not only will you be fined..you could have your car taken away and points put on your licence..that has not changed and has always been the case...

BUT I also think one can be fined and penalized if they do not drive their cars when uninsured while the car is taxed...and could still have their car removed..

I am not sure if you have to now inform the authorities when ones car is not INSURED...similar to when one has to notify them when ones car tax runs out and they do not renew it...They have to class it as SORN...
To say it will be kept off the public roads.

You could get away with driving without a MOT or at least no one could easily tell unless you were pulled up and asked to produce it...

Now they have ANPR  Automatic Number plate recognition that can tell if a car has no MOT....I don't think at the moment in the UK they have them set up statically like speed cameras as yet on numerous roads around the country... As Far as I know they are being used within special vehicles that drive around that could detect information if the operator selects a vehicle to do a check.

But I suspect they may very soon become a standard thing on major roads... thus will ensure no one gets away with anything any more.

Unless there are some flaws that may be possible to take advantage off that have been overlooked..... ???

Motorists will no longer need to show their car insurance certificate when taxing their vehicle under new plans to cut red tape for drivers.
The insurance check when you buy a tax disc has been in place for over 40 years and has led to countless drivers scrabbling for the key insurance document every time their car-tax falls due.
But the change to be announced today by Roads Minister Robert Goodwill is part of a package of measures that the Government says will save taxpayers up to  £8 million every year.

The Government's Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) said: 'Motorists will no longer have to search for their insurance certificates when they tax their cars. 'They will still have to have valid insurance but they won't be asked to show it.'

Police and the authorities can now make automatic online checks on whether a car is covered by cross-referencing the vehicle's number plate with the DVLA and insurance industry databases.

This means they already know if a driver has insurance or not. So there's no longer a need to make people dig around for bits of paper to prove they have insurance. The changes apply whichever way you buy your tax discs - whether at a Post Office or online via the DVLA.
It comes after Chancellor announced in last week's Autumn Statement that the traditional paper tax disc - and the need to display one on your windscreen -   is being scrapped after nearly a century. And for the first time drivers will be able to pay by direct debit.

Yes that's how they got me here in the USA but in Texas they can't admit it because it falls under mass surveillance which is illegal.lol.
Just out of curiosity ,how much is car insurance in your country,in american dollar values.

Robo,

I wasn't sure if ANPR was in place or not in the USA...as in many things ,the USA is ahead in these sort of things....If they had you with it using it illegally as you suggest, could you have challenged it ?  It is certainly concerning...and its like many other numerous things that they just seem to bring out so suddenly with little or no warning !

Id say over all today ,Car Insurance is more expensive than ever. in the UK at least....  or so we are told...due to many drivers having been previously uninsured , fraud and people making false & illegal claims etc... so they claim the insurance companies have to raise their prices.

Young drivers have it terribly...and have been paying more than ever and well and truly over a fair cost !

but obviously different cars will vary and many factors determine what costs are as it can be quite a complex business..

I am sure its the same in the USA... we have specialized websites that allow you to compare different companies and allow you to enter various info that determine what you pay...they ask a whole series of questions..

Overall I find these sites good to use as you can try putting in various info that will alter what you pay...Its OK if you can get a better deal...

BUT the downside is if you misinform and are unlucky to have an incident...  they may not pay out if they find out or you could be penalized....

AHA! you've found one of my pet hates.

Insurance. tehy ask so many questions (soem of which requre a cystal ball in which to answer) and then set a contract up predicated on your answers. IF you baseline data such as what you do fro a living changes your insurance is invalid. So if you have a fight with teh missus and go live in a hotel at least three of your points of data become invalid. I live in two places, and my work and job title vary wildly. So theoretically 9and ppractically) I need to keep changing my data with a £30 levery each time I do it.

I had my Bike insurance cancelled after it was all set up because they suddenly decided that they had to SEE my driving licence, which I haven't actually had in my possession since 1995 when they added a requirement for a picture which I won't comply with. I've NEVER filled in sorn or paid the fines that they try to collect. Just ignore the letters and they go away. (like all bullies, they don't yet come after you if you put up a bit of opposition) I agree with the need for insurance, and MOT, but as per usual it's a massive rip off from paying the policy to the inflated costs that seem to happen when ever a claim is neccesary.

OH and put a WOMAN on your forms! Here in the UK its good for about 10% off the costs. MY Daimler costs less than 300 quid per year to insure. But I know pretty much all the correct answers to the questions now, without telling any lies...
