Title: My search for the Shard
Post by: Vandalis on July 05, 2014, 12:28:43 PM
For a good while now I've been trying to locate the exact location of the "shard". It was a hobby that I did when I got bored lol.

I was unsure whether to post  it or not but Armap said he would be interested so ill give it a go.  Last time I held out on a post about an image someone else eventually found it about 6 months later lol

I was going to show how I found it and the whole story as I used the images to pin point the area, had a whole thread just for that part, but I just found that  there's a huge thread on ATS about the same thing. Someone beat me to it aha. I don't like ATS so I only looked through a few pages.

Here's the link if you want to read it. http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread924918/pg1

So im just going to add my part here.

The area in question for those who don't know is just east of Lalande crater. There inst that many images of that area so ive been using the old LO and others and then looking at google moon, using the LO overlay just to get my bearings and a good look at the terrain.  It wasn't until I was sifting through the Apollo image archive for some images taken by the Apollo crew that It all came together, I wondered if I used the search term Lalande if it would give me anything, and it gave me 1 result.

This was image AS12-51-7507. You can see the crater in the distance just below the LM. But its still too far out to get a good look. SO I thought id go through the AS12 images to see if there was more in the series. Unfortunately they weren't there. So off to google I went and I managed to find them on http://www.lpi.usra.edu/resources/apollo/catalog/70mm/magazine/?51

On there we get from a good few showing the crater.

So here is Lalande as taken from Apollo 12. And straight away I could see what I believe to be the shard and the cube. The shard is off to the right but it looks very faded and its hard to pick out. If we believe these structures are made out of a glass like material we would be seeing through them which makes it hard to see.

I then looked back to google moon but there's even less to see on them. You can only just see the outline of the cube and the shard is hidden amongst the background although there are 2 hanger shaped objects there as well.

You can just about see the cube although it is very fuzzy and the shard has blended into the scenery but it does show what looks like two hangers right around where the shard should be.

Now I know they don't look like much the Apollo image is better than the LO though. This is why I hesitated about posting it but if you look at the images and compare the location and the shapes I think they fit very well.

Well that's it for now. I did have more a while back but the folder with all my moon stuff vanished from my pc again and I had to start over. Just as well I did because I never had the Apollo images. Makes it much better. You can find some nice stuff on google moon but its not the best source.

I don't normally post much on forums, my anxiety gets bad which is why I just browse and post every so often. Be gentle ahah :P

I'm glad you created the thread. :)

That means that I wasn't that far from the location I posted on that ATS thread. :)

First things first, I will look for other versions of that photo and for other photos of that area. :)

That one photo (well, several, really) was washed out and I brought it into Photoshop to try and bring out the details.  The results:

After looking at the maps available here (http://www.lpi.usra.edu/resources/mapcatalog/apolloindex/apollo12/) I found that Lalande crater is visible (at least) in these photos from Apollo 12.

(it's also visible in other photos, but too far away from the camera to be useful)

Tomorrow I will look for photos from other missions. :)

Try using this:

Made this for fun using WAC nearside and WAC mosaics + NACS...

Oooh that looks so much better thanks.  :D

I remember theres an image of the cube that shows the struts, you can just about make them out. The shard is looking like it should too.

I have no idea what that other object is, but its a lot bigger than the others. I wasn't expecting to see it.

You guys think I got something? or am seeing things? haha

Most welcome.  The unidentified thing seems to have a (very roughly) rectanglish shape - like a rectangular roof looked at from an angle, with the roof not being flat but slightly bowed.  Can You see it?  Or do I need to highlight it?

You are seeing things, what remains to be cleared is what kind of things you are seeing. :)

Yes, a mortar board.  Very weird.
