Google's Newest Satellite Will Be Able To Zoom In On Your Face

Google is about to get an eye in the sky powerful enough to see your face, thanks to a new satellite set to launch later this week and updated satellite imaging laws.

After lobbying the federal government to green-light a halving of the satellite imaging zoom limit to 25 cm resolution earlier this year, satellite company DigitalGlobe will launch a new satellite Wednesday capable of shooting the new images, which will show in detail objects as small as 10 inches, according to Motherboard.

Among its customers DigitalGlobe counts multiple federal agencies, NASA, Microsoft and Google, which signed a new multi-year contract to obtain images for Google Earth, Maps, and Street View earlier this year.

The company, which already has five satellites in orbit, is currently lobbying to reduce the resolution down to 10 cm, or the size of a smartphone, according to the report.

"At 25 centimeters, the images will be detailed enough to classify the make of a car," the report states. "If the restrictions relax further, the plate number or owner's face could come into clear view."

25 centimetres per pixel is the resolution of the HiRISE photos of Mars, but to see plate numbers and the owner's face they would need to find a way to bend the light. :)

If the cameras are directly above looking down, then unless we look up...I am not sure how they can see number plates or faces..

But if the cameras are looking down at a certain angle..then I suspect that they can see them...

but the distances involved would vary...and I am not sure that it will be something where they can use it to scan our faces in full detail like if the cameras were looking directly facing towards us..

the tech exists far beyond what most peope can imagine,
in the world of NRO. They do and can see the buttons
on your shirt and the little writing too.

I suppose that Google's eyes will not be as senitive,
yet still ...a step closer to a sky net type of "web".

Why do people always think that satellites only look down? That is not true. Spy satellites look in different angles.  However it is very difficult to determine a license plate from space. Markings on a plane yes, but license plates is a different story. It could be done but only with the right camera angle, the right lighting and the right temperature (freezing) and a perfectly clear sky.

Well then, I have nothing to worry about.
