Title: Artificial sweeteners may promote diabetes, claim scientists
Post by: Pimander on September 18, 2014, 12:42:18 PM
Controversial research suggests artificial sweeteners may raise blood sugar levels by promoting growth of certain gut bacteria.

Artificial sweeteners may contribute to soaring levels of diabetes, according to a controversial study that suggests the additives could exacerbate the problem they are meant to tackle.

Researchers in Israel found that artificial sweeteners used in diet drinks and other foods can disrupt healthy microbes that live in the gut, leading to higher blood sugar levels – an early sign of diabetes.

QuoteNon-caloric artificial sweeteners (NAS) are among the most widely used food additives worldwide, regularly consumed by lean and obese individuals alike. NAS consumption is considered safe and beneficial owing to their low caloric content, yet supporting scientific data remain sparse and controversial. Here we demonstrate that consumption of commonly used NAS formulations drives the development of glucose intolerance through induction of compositional and functional alterations to the intestinal microbiota. These NAS-mediated deleterious metabolic effects are abrogated by antibiotic treatment, and are fully transferrable to germ-free mice upon faecal transplantation of microbiota configurations from NAS-consuming mice, or of microbiota anaerobically incubated in the presence of NAS. We identify NAS-altered microbial metabolic pathways that are linked to host susceptibility to metabolic disease, and demonstrate similar NAS-induced dysbiosis and glucose intolerance in healthy human subjects. Collectively, our results link NAS consumption, dysbiosis and metabolic abnormalities, thereby calling for a reassessment of massive NAS usage.

I am so glad I have had virtually none of this crap.  Having found stevia (which has been shown to support a healthy blood sugar level), I have avoided the synthetic sweeteners.  Stevia is an herb from South America and is 300 times sweeter than sugar.  My recommendation if One wishes to avoid sugar (and all the fake sweeteners).

I've avoided them as much as possible for years now too.  I thought I should post this as I know some of the people here use artificial sweeteners.

I think licorice extract is much sweeter than sugar too.

I won't use any artificial sweetner; but let's add in that using sugar as a flavor enhancer leads to increased yeast in your system; one way to counter that is to make sure you consume vinegar preserved foods such as pickles...

it also helps to drink water in place of sodas; you need 2 quarts of h2o a day minimum for bodily processes to function; the water also helps flush blood sugar levels...

I know a lot of people say water, uggh, fish hump in it, but the ol meatsuit is 86% water...

just don't drink salt water  8)

I haven't tried this yet.  I'm off to the shops later so I'll buy a few jars of pickle while I'm there.

I never used sweeteners (directly or as food ingredients) before May, when I found out that I have diabetes, now I use it only as an ingredient in some of the foods I eat, but I try to avoid them.

As a sweetener, I will probably never use it, as I only used sugar in tea, and I don't have any problems drinking it without sugar. :)

I don't have any idea of what 2 quarts represent in the metric systems, but I read somewhere that we should drink in mililitres more or less what we consume in kcal, so someone eating 1500 kcal per day should drink 1500 ml (1.5 litres) of water.

armap a liter is a little more than a quart; takes 3.78 liters to make a u.s. gallon, so 2 liters will suffice... what chaps my butt is they have had a cure for diabetes for over 50 years...

either block the first 12 inches of the duodenum or resect it and suddenly you aren't diabetic anymore...

I have written this many times lately, but... can you post some evidence for that? Thanks in advance (although I'm not interested in losing my duodenum). :)

And thanks for the explanation. :)

Do wine and beer count towards your daily water requirements? :P

@ArMaP,

Just a factoid, after food leaves the duodenum it has been refined to the chemical building blocks—amino and fatty acids, monosaccharides, nucleotides.

Armap, it is actually posted in a thread here on the forum, from last year I believe, if I can find it; complete with links to medical references and findings... am looking for it  8)
