Lagarfljótsormur, Iceland's Legendary Lake Monster, Caught On Tape, Panel Says

Unfortunately the video did not work when I looked at the website...maybe someone can find another video of it somewhere...

Who needs Loch Ness when you've got Lagarfljótsormur?

A 13-member panel convened in Iceland has decided by a seven-vote (i.e. very narrow) majority that grainy footage released in 2012 in fact depicts Lagarfljótsormur, a legendary lake monster first reported in 1345.

According to Slate, the decision entitles the author of the footage to a small reward, although a Finnish researcher previously concluded that the video actually shows an ice-caked fishing net.
The move has been criticized as an obvious stunt to draw cryptotourism to Iceland.

It might be just as well that the Lagarfljótsormur footage isn't authentic -- in legend, the icy worm is said to be a harbinger of catastrophe.

In 2010, volcanic eruptions in Iceland were so bad that they disrupted travel to Europe. Recently, Iceland's Bardarbunga volcano has been erupting, spewing lava and sending tremors across the land. Thanks, Lagarfljótsormur.

I think this is the video that was analysed by that panel, at least it looks like the same on that Huffington Post article.
