QuoteSEOUL, South Korea –  North and South Korea traded fire Friday after the North shot at a South Korean propaganda balloon, an official and a news report said.

A defense official in Seoul said North Korea fired at South Korea and some of the shells fell on the South's territory. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of office rules, said South Korea returned fire.

The firing comes as speculation grows about what is happening with North Korea's authoritarian leader, Kim Jong Un, who has been out of public view for more than a month. He missed a major anniversary event on Friday for the first time in three years.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency said the North fired at the propaganda balloon near the South Korean border town of Yeoncheon. It provided no sources for the information.

Wow.. I read a bit more than usual on this one, since the headline is a little crazy by even DMZ news standards. That's actually pretty uncool tho... Someone might want to note this is a REALLY bad time to be provoking the North in even an itty bitty way, as a joke.

It's not just doing it on their big day of national meaning (to each their own on that, I suppose), but Dear Leader is literally missing and long enough now for talk to have begun. That whole nation is literally built upon Dear Leader and his dearly departed father being Divine leadership in the true sense of the word. I'm not sure what happens if the idiot tripped down a flight of stairs like any mortal man, and mushed his noodle like anyone else may.

I do think North Korea is geared entirely for and always poised to initiate their little version of total war. It's antiquated in technology but it's an ocean in numbers....and what precisely does happen in a culture formed around a personality, and geared to war in one which never actually ended, when the personality abruptly vanishes with no heir apparent?

Maybe....wait for another time for giving them all the raspberries with a whole mess of balloons? (or maybe the DPRK troops were just shooting at them to get their $1... lol.. I'd laugh if it later came out, they actually were thinking about that.)

Sadly this is the DMZ tit for tat.  I have a co-worker who did a 6 month tour on the DMZ and he said there was some kind of bullshittery going on about once every 2 weeks. (This would have been 2004-ish or so.)  Not purposeful to kill, but purposeful to intimidate and threaten.  Purposeful to rattle nerves.
