For too long you just walk on by, you pass that soul on the street, that soul, your son, your mother, father, brother, daughter... and look away, not wanting to admit how close you are to being like them.

Some claim that homelessness is caused by something they did wrong. We aim to project that homelessness is an effect, an effect that our current humanity accepts. There are people on our streets in our communities without shelter, without food, without warmth or the comforts too many take for granted through no fault of their own.

Why does society demonize the poor? - (when the fault lies with the rich).

And ask yourself, how long would you last if the next paycheck was your last?
What would you do to feed, shelter and keep yourself safe without money?
Who could you turn to?

Anonymous does not acknowledge this to be an acceptable status quo. Human beings are not disposable, are not to be thrown away like the trash and ignored; we all have value.

We will do what we can to assist those who find themselves in this vortex of poverty. We ask you, do what you can. Humanity and kindness costs nothing.

Humanity In this age appears to be lacking. There exists in every community small pockets of humanity, here and there, struggling, fighting against a norm that's sickening, that says I'm ok, I have what I need and without a care for others. But there are those among us who are homeless, hungry, cold, alone.

Anonymous asks you, do what you can. Assist those that need support. Share just a little of our comforts with another in need.

Embed In your child's mindset that helping others is a normal human trait and your child will instill this trait in their child's mind and we progress. We progress as a species and prove to the world that humanity is here, alive.

We can make the world a better place simply by caring for each other. Fulfilling our needs through each other in the spirit of compassion, understanding and generosity - that is the duty we share as humans.??We learned to share when we were children. Let's not forget it as adults.

A moment of kindness can change the world for you and the people you help.

Kindness is contagious. Your act of kindness and generosity can save a life.

We can put humanity on a plateau that none have seen before.

Lets do this, be a part of opsafewinter

We are anonymous
We do not forgive
We do not forget
Do what you can
The homeless can expect us

A beautiful thing happened in nottingham on the 23ed of February as Anonymous protesters took to the streets.

On this day, their aim was to shutdown all the tax avoiding shops, this is in response to the tax dodging corporations on the high streets who have evaded in excess of £70billion in corporation.

Stephen, a homeless man in nottingham, caught the eye of anonymous members who stopped and gave him money.

Overwhelmed with love, steven starts to cry as anonymous member give him hugs and change.

Under code name oprobbinhood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njONcmb81r0) they truly made this homeless man's day.

On November 5th, 2013... the citizens of the world made their voices heard. This is only the beginning...

Greetings citizens of the world,

We should all remember remember the 5th of November, the day the Earth stood still.

One people united together, a symbol of humanities strong will.

The battle only just begun, yet already so close to being won.

Now we stand at the crossroads of history, ready to embrace our destiny.

This past 5th of November showed unity on a scale world wide. From Japan, to the Philippines, to Australia, the United States, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom, in over 400 cities world wide people stood as one and made their collective voice heard! We all made it clear this is our planet, and corruption, greed, & injustice are never forgotten, nor accepted by the citizens of the world.

Few mainstream media outlets covered the events of November 5th, 2013. Nevertheless, the powers that be know what happened on that day and an impact was made. In the words of Gandhi, "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."

We've seen them ignore us, we've seen them laugh at us, we've seen them fight us, and now they're seeing us win.

Even in the darkest hours never stop believing in the power you hold. For the true power always lies in the people, never the governments and/or corporations.

Remember any day can be the 5th of November, what matters isn't the date, it's humanity's spirit. For example, this winter season small acts of kindness for those less fortunate can go a long way.

Currently, there's an on going operation called "#OpSafeWinter" which focuses on helping those in need. Food banks need donations of food and water. In addition, for someone without a place to stay, a simple pair a socks will go a long way.

The things we take for granted are often what many pray to have.

Shelter, a warm meal, blankets, even clean water, millions of people world wide are going without them, and some are dying because of it.

These are issues that are solvable today! Lets take that energy of the 5th of November and apply it everyday in our everyday lives. Rather than waiting for things to change for the better, be the change.

A small act of kindness multiplies fast and soon becomes a beacon of hope, unity, and progress that lights the road for generations to come.

We are Anonymous,
We are Legion,
We can Forgive,
Yet we shall never Forget,
Expect us.

Lyrics:

a card board bed spread in a doorway, of a clothes shop in the city,
beside a trolly, filled with everything yet nothing, at all.
frozen fingers warming by a fading tea light,
flat soda from a bottle, found somewhere in the bin.
and every soul who's passing by,
is looking down and turns away.
they don't care but they can see that,
it's a devils kind of game,
got society all broken,
so now it's burning down our dreams,
could be you or me tomorrow,
tomorrow could be you and me,

won't you, show me a feeling,
i can still believe in,
now I'm down and I'm in need and,
I sure could use a friend, ooh
won't you help me thru
cause I am in world of blues
now I'm down and I'm in need oh,
pick me up and get me on my feet.

big ques at the food bank, small loans to pay rent,
front doors, closing, remember time that we spent,
signs people holding, please feed my children,
I'll do anything in return.

acts of desperation, white sheets at the station,
all trains are delayed, again.
now winter has fallen, many files are closing,
faces you won't see again.

won't you show me a feeling,
i can, still believe in,
now I'm down and I'm in need and,
I sure could use a friend, ooh
won't you help me thru
cause I am in world of blues
now I'm down and I'm in need oh,
pick me up and get me on my feet.

You kind souls are making the news >>> Anonymous has new target, launch #OpSafeWinter | OpSafeWinter (https://opsafewinter.org/?p=1423)

Not everyone necessarily agrees with Anonymous's methods or reasons for some of their cyber-tomfoolery, but few would disagree with #OpSafeWinter.

"We're doing this as a collective, global effort directed at the homeless who need help and, really, our main goal is to inspire others to help the homeless in whatever way they can," said an Anonymous member from the Maritimes who uses the pseudonym Mercy Snowden.

Members of Anonymous have devoted themselves to advocating for widely divergent causes such as using the Internet to reveal identities of Klu Klux Klan members, waging a cyberwar against several major corporations and governments over the years, and highlighting the case of Halifax teenager Rehtaeh Parsons, who died after a suicide attempt prompted by an alleged sexual assault and cyberbullying.

Love them or not, there is no doubt Anonymous has good intentions, in a sort of Robin Hoodish kind of way.

The local "hive" has joined forces with Souls Harbour Rescue Mission to collect donations of warm winter clothing, hats, gloves, socks and blankets for people who are without a home. The event was held last year in several countries around the world.

On Dec. 13, volunteers in Halifax will offer a hot meal at the shelter and hope to have a selection of winter clothing and personal hygiene packages to hand out to those in need.

"We're looking for donations of warm clothing to have on hand at the shelter on Dec. 13," said "Snowden."

Volunteers plan to fan out into downtown Halifax and environs in search of needy people who may need a hot meal and warm clothing.

"We will say to them if you're hungry, come with us and get a meal," the hacktivist said. The event will happen from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

As for the rescue mission, bring on the winter clothing. "I don't care who brings us warm winter gear; we're glad to have it, and appreciate the effort," said executive director Michelle Porter.

The drop-in centre operates out of 5568 Cunard St. as a place where those in need can get a hot lunch, clothing and personal-care items. Those who need a hot meal can go to the centre Monday to Friday.

"And that's the other thing we're pleased about this group coming on Dec. 13 — we can't offer meals on the weekends because we don't have enough staff, so anyone volunteering to provide a meal on the weekend makes us really happy," said Porter.

"Snowden" said the hope is to not only collect warm clothing, but also to raise awareness of the plight of those who literally have no place to lay their heads on a cold winter night.

"Maybe those of us who have more will be more aware — buy a coffee for someone or ask what they need on a particular day — because we believe compassion is contagious," she said.

Founded in 2010
After founding a large Rescue Mission in Regina, Saskatchewan, Ken and Michelle Porter sold their home & all they owned, packed a few mementos into the back of their Matrix, and drove 4000 km across Canada, strangers in their new home of Halifax.

There they founded Souls Harbour, a Rescue Mission where men, women and families can drop in for a meal and a cup of coffee.  It's a place where guests can access free clothing or household items, free local calls, free wifi, a haircut, a listening ear, or even to get their taxes done.

WHAT:
   •   25,000 meals a year
   •   Up to 100 men, women & children fed daily
   •   4 annual 3-course holiday dinners for 400

"We dream of upgrading our small kitchen into a commercial kitchen where it would be easy to prepare 100 hot, nutritious meals at a time.  Our dream kitchen has stainless steel counters and stainless steel open shelving, a commercial oven and grill, commercial dishwasher, triple sinks and a cooler.

It would be filled with sparkling new pots and pans and a commercial coffee maker for those 1000's of cups of coffee that we serve every month!  It will be clean, bright and modern, a welcoming atmosphere to every soul that enters."

WHEN:
   •   Our 4th year of service to the needy
   •   Open Monday to Friday 1:00-4:00
   •   Open 2x/month for Friday Night Suppers
   •   Open Wednesday evenings

"I just want to thank you so much for having me for dinner. If it wasn't for you I wouldn't celebrate the holiday. I would be pretty hungry. And lonely. And I feel really safe here.  And loved." - Rose, thanking us after this year's Thanksgiving dinner (http://cjme.com/story/hundreds-thanksgiving-meals-served-regina-rescue-mission/422736)

On March 30th, 2014 Evolve PDX organized the Million Blanket March in Portland, Oregon in response to Mayor Charlie Hales' recent crackdown on homeless sleeping on the streets.

There was an emphasis on taking their blankets because they were deemed obstructive and bad for business.

This film documents that event.

This did my heart good... posted on my faceb00k wall.

Chris Shankle
December 2 at 11:12am · Saint Petersburg, FL ·

A few days ago, I stopped by a Walgreens, instead of getting out right away, I had to make two chess moves, and play Words with Friends.... I noticed a homeless man sitting on the corner as people walked in and out of the store without paying attention. He wasn't asking for any money, just sitting there.

Pretty sad. For the first time, I didn't walk by and act like I was on the phone, instead, I grabbed all of the change in my truck, around $7.00, I walked over and handed it to him. I thought he was going to cry, he thanked me...

Today, in a McDonald's drive thru, there is a homeless guy sitting near the trash can , I picked up my phone to act like I was on a call so he wouldn't bother me.. But, I realized I don't really need my cheeseburger, so I drove back around and handed him my food, I kept the fries though, ha.

He thanked me. It feels good to help someone out sometimes, so hopefully everyone realizes how lucky we are to have what we have, and who knows what tragedy or addictions they have gone through to have ended up where they are...

Help someone, even a little, this month. I am still hungry though...

Happy Holidays everyone!

In 33 U.S. Cities, It's Illegal to Do the One Thing That Helps the Homeless Most (http://mic.com/articles/91055/in-33-u-s-cities-it-s-illegal-to-do-the-one-thing-that-helps-the-homeless-most)

By Tom McKay
June 12, 2014

The news: In case the United States' problem with homelessness wasn't bad enough, a forthcoming National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) report says that 33 U.S. cities now ban or are considering banning the practice of sharing food with homeless people.

Four municipalities (Raleigh, N.C.; Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Birmingham, Ala.; and Daytona Beach, Fla.) have recently gone as far as to fine, remove or threaten to throw in jail private groups that work to serve food to the needy instead of letting government-run services do the job.

Why it's happening:
The bans are officially instituted to prevent government-run anti-homelessness programs from being diluted. But in practice, many of the same places that are banning food-sharing are the same ones that have criminalized homelessness with harsh and punitive measures.

Essentially, they're designed to make being homeless within city limits so unpleasant that the downtrodden have no choice but to leave. Tampa, for example, criminalizes sleeping or storing property in public. Columbia, South Carolina, passed a measure that essentially would have empowered police to ship all homeless people out of town. Detroit PD officers have been accused of illegally taking the homeless and driving them out of the city.

The U.N. even went so far as to single the United States out in a report on human rights (http://www.nlchp.org/INT_CCPR_COC_USA_16838_E.pdf), saying criminalization of homelessness in the United States "raises concerns of discrimination and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment."

"I'm just simply baffled by the idea that people can be without shelter in a country, and then be treated as criminals for being without shelter," said human rights lawyer Sir Nigel Rodley, chairman of the U.N. committee. "The idea of criminalizing people who don't have shelter is something that I think many of my colleagues might find as difficult as I do to even begin to comprehend."

Meanwhile, the programs in place to support the homeless are typically inadequate, making claims that ending food-sharing is for their own good specious at best.

According to government data, about 600,000 people are homeless (https://www.hudexchange.info/resource/3300/2013-ahar-part-1-pit-estimates-of-homelessness/) on any given night.

Some 20 states bucked a nationally declining homeless rate from the height of the recession, increasing in measures of homelessness from 2012-2013. According to the NCH, one survey of homelessness found 62,619 veterans were homeless in January 2012.

Other at-risk groups for homelessness include (http://nationalhomeless.org/about-homelessness/) the seriously ill, battered women and people suffering from drug addictions or mental illness.

The economy isn't helping. More Americans live in poverty than before the recession began in 2008 and the number of households living under the poverty line has reached levels unseen since the 1960s (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/jan/7/obamas-rhetoric-on-fighting-poverty-doesnt-match-h/?page=all).

Some city officials, like Houston's Mayor Annise Parker (https://news.vice.com/article/more-us-cities-are-cracking-down-on-feeding-the-homeless), claim that "making it easier for someone to stay on the streets is not humane" and say that uncoordinated charity efforts "keep them on the street longer, which is what happens when you feed them."

A local Food Not Bombs activist told VICE that the actual effect was to intimidate local residents from giving out food. Other cities are harsher. In 2011, more than 20 members of Food Not Bombs were arrested in Orlando (http://www.thenation.com/blog/161677/food-not-bombs-members-arrested-feeding-hungry) for sharing food. Love Wins Ministries in Raleigh was threatened with arrest (http://lovewins.info/2013/08/feeding-homeless-apparently-illegal-in-raleigh-nc/) for providing biscuits to the homeless.

Daytona Beach fined, harassed and threatened jail time for Debbie and Chico Jimenez, who run a ministry called "Spreading the Word Without Saying a Word." (http://spreadingthewordwithoutsayingawordministry.com)

Debbie and Chico Jimenez, who run a ministry to help people in poverty, were were ticketed last week $373 a piece (along with four other people) for feeding about 100 homeless people at a Daytona Beach Park. (photo courtesy NBCnews)

NBC News: Police Allegedly Ticket Volunteers for Feeding Homeless - Video (http://www.nbcnews.com/video/nbc-news/55162105#55162105)

"Homeless people are visible in downtown America. And cities think by cutting off the food source it will make the homeless go away. It doesn't, of course," NCH community organizing director Michael Stoops told NBC News. "We want to get cities to quit doing this. We support the right of all people to share food."

"Nobody would suggest that the ideal situation for a homeless person to be in is living on the street, but the reality is people are living there and they will die there if they don't receive food," National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty policy director Jeremy Rosen told VICE.

Why you should care?

This is cruelty at its basest and most pointless. The homeless are real people who deserve to be treated like human beings. And if a city bans sharing the necessities of life with them, it doesn't bode well for other ways they treat the homeless.

Meanwhile, successful programs have demonstrated (http://mic.com/articles/86251/study-reveals-it-costs-less-to-give-the-homeless-housing-than-to-leave-them-on-the-street) that systematically providing housing and food for the homeless costs society less than leaving them on the street.

Anonymous Op LiftTheBans Successful in Allowing the Feeding of Homeless in Ft Lauderdale Florida (http://revolution-news.com/anonymous-op-liftthebans-successful-allowing-feeding-homeless-ft-lauderdale-florida/)

For 30 days, police are not allowed to arrest or issue citations to people feeding homeless in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Arnold Abbott is the founder of Love Thy Neighbor (http://lovethyneighbor.org), a local nonprofit that helps the homeless.

"I appreciate all of your concern for my safety, but I have faced the Klu Klux Klan on many occasions, and I have no fear of spending the night in a Fort Lauderdale jail," Abbott wrote on Facebook. "I thank you all, and I pray that we all stay strong. We shall prevail!"

Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler was addressed on Monday when Anonymous announced "Op Lift The Bans." (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2A9EJvIQ_Y&feature=youtu.be)

Anonymous gave the city and mayor, Jack [John] Seiler, 24 hours to lift the ban before commencing "Operation Lift the Bans." Sure enough, for several hours on Monday, Ftlauderdale.gov and FLPD.gov were down. Seiler's personal website was also dark.

Authorities claim they took down the Ft. Lauderdale website as a precaution once the attacks began, but even if this is true, it appears Anonymous accomplished its goal. On Tuesday, only a day after the #OpLiftTheBans was launched, Judge Thomas Lynch ruled that no arrests would be made or citations issued for the next 30 days.

Anonymous — who engage in worldwide activism — have also been critical of rules that target the homeless by banning panhandling, sleeping in public property and the use of homeless spikes.

Anonymous gave the city and mayor, Jack [John] Seiler, 24 hours to lift the ban before commencing "Operation Lift the Bans."

"Hello, citizen of the world and Fort Lauderdale.

It has come to our attention that Mayor John Seiler has become an embarrassment to the law abiding citizens of Fort Lauderdale, arresting Arnold Abbot, who is 90 years old and served our country, for feeding the homeless.

You are a disgrace, Mayor John Seiler.

So therefore, we have a list of demands, and if not met, then we shall shut down the main site of Fort Lauderdale, among other sites.

Our demands are to lift the ordinance C-14-38, which makes panhandling illegal at busy intersections for not only homeless but also charities; C14-41, which makes it illegal for anyone to sleep in public in the downtown area; and C14-42, which prohibits citizens from being able to hand out food unless certain requirements are met.

You have 24 hours or less, depending on whether this reaches you, Mayor John Seiler — 24 hours to comply with our demands or the site will be shut down, along with other sites belonging to Fort Lauderdale.

Operation Lift the Bans engaged.
We are anonymous.
We are legion.
We do not forgive.
We do not forget.
You should have expected this, Mayor John Seiler."

From reading the reports it appears that feeding the homeless in a PUBLIC PARK is illegal but its okay on private property like a church.

Seems the Mayor and Abbot shook hands and came to an agreement

The week before, Abbott was busted on two different occasions for feeding the needy at Stranahan Park, just a few blocks from where he was Sunday.

"What Arnold's doing is actually a very kind and compassionate act," Mayor Jack Seiler said during a face-off with Abbott on a local TV station on Sunday. "We are just simply asking him to do it in a proper location."

"We have tried many, many times to find indoor locations to feed the homeless and they have not been available to us," Abbott responded. "If you can find locations like that, I am not married to Stranahan Park."

Abbott avoided the wrath of cops on Sunday by feeding the homeless indoors, at a local church in Fort Lauderdale. A new city ordinance forbids anyone from feeding the homeless in public.

The mayor also admitted making a mistake, saying "we were wrong in not getting the word out sooner. And in fairness to Arnold, we should have sat down with him ... making sure that he was on board. But obviously that message got lost."

No mention of Anonymous in this deal

::)

There was this though...

"On Friday, three members of a group called Food Not Bombs were busted for helping out the homeless at the park, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

"As Martin Luther King Jr., said, our responsibility is to disobey unjust laws," 25-year-old Nikki Rye, one of the three who was arrested, told the Sun-Sentinel. "These actions violate basic human rights."

Perhaps they were Anon?

Most of the homeless people in Portugal are concentrated in the cities of Lisbon and Porto. Reports say that around 300 homeless people sleep on the streets of Lisbon every night. Today, members of the Comunidade Vida e Paz are persuading the homeless population of Lisbon to take part in rehabilitation programs in order to improve the quality of their lives.

To meet and welcome homeless people, or socially vulnerable, helping them to regain their dignity and to (re) build their life project, through an integrated preventive action, rehabilitation and reintegration.

It seems to me that this 'contest of eggos" :P revolves around numbers

No one will argue that SOME Anon are in it for the RIGHT REASONS

The question many have is "What percentage are working for the good, what percentage are out there hacking everyone they can and what percentage are "useless eaters" along for the ride.

Feeding and sharing with the homeless, (while illegal in some places (REALLY?)), is a noble cause.

But I see no Anon masks in my city helping the homeless not ONE and we have a lot of homeless because other cities give them a one way bus ticket here :P That really pissed off our Mob Mayor a while back   8)

So like that Florida case with the old guy... The way I read that is that the Mayor and the Perp came to an agreement. In fact to ME it reads like the whole thing was prearranged to get the mayor votes for being the good guy (it was an election year :P ) and I see no Anon presence in that whole deal

Just sayin....

Perhaps we need to get Fox News out to a real Anon "Feed the Homeless" event :D

(there might even be such a video  I don't have time to see all :P)

Proof is in the Plum Pudding

#OpSafeWinter: Generosity Goes Viral

#OpSafeWinter: Generosity Goes Viral (https://opsafewinter.org/?p=1571)

It's the time of year when we are most often asked to "think of the less fortunate."

But what if we felt empowered to take action that might actually help them?

#OpSafeWinter (http://opsafewinter.org), inspired by the lessons learned at Occupy Wall Street (http://occupywallst.org) and from teachers like Sharon Salzberg (http://www.sharonsalzberg.com) and Bob Thurman (http://bobthurman.com), aims to do just that by providing a decentralized network of support for the homeless.

Instead of waiting around for relief organizations, is it possible for us to involve ourselves in direct mutual aid (http://occupywallstreet.net/story/year-two-mutual-aid), thus revealing the interdependent nature of suffering and compassion?

Inspired by the real-world experience and skill sets developed on the ground during Occupy Wall Street and Occupy Sandy (http://occupysandy.net), folks involved in these two previous relief missions came together to address another problem threatening more and more people during the economic crisis: homelessness.

An #OpSafeWinternyc (https://www.facebook.com/OpSafeWinterNYC) contact describes mutual aid as a two-way street. Not only do the homeless and hungry receive relief in the form of coats and food, but those doing the relief are developing contacts and getting the chance to use their skills. Everyone gets an expanded sense of what's possible by learning to interact with their neighbors, homeless or not, in an informal setting.

From Sharon:

Lovingkindness

Lovingkindness is a quality of friendship. Lovingkindness meditation is the cultivation of  a steady, unconditional sense of connection that touches all beings without exception, including ourselves. The quality of lovingkindness is associated with three other qualities: Compassion, Sympathetic Joy & Equanimity.

Compassion is our caring human response to suffering.

A compassionate heart is non-judgmental and recognizes all suffering—our own and that of others—as deserving of tenderness.

Sympathetic Joy is the realization that others' happiness is inseparable from our own. We rejoice in the joy of others and are not threatened by another's success.

Equanimity is the spacious stillness of mind that provides the ground for the boundless nature of the other three qualities. This radiant calm enables us to ride the waves of our experience without getting lost in our reactions.

#OpSafeWinter is different from traditional relief organizations in that it's a horizontal, decentralized network. Anyone who thinks up a mission that might help the homeless can feel empowered to do so, and the network is a tool to connect those in need with those who can provide.

There are people working to document and skill-share online in major cities across not only the US but across the globe as well. It's also different from a consciousness raising campaign that merely increases awareness of a problem and possibly inspires people to donate money.

#OpSafeWinter takes awareness and builds on it with action.

The movement makes use of direct aid to the homeless rather than relying on intermediaries, a technique we saw in the days after Hurricane Sandy when people refused to wait for the lagging and incomplete support of the Red Cross or FEMA.

The process does one better than merely highlighting the homeless problem across the globe, but also builds a resource network of donated food, blankets, and clothing, thus stepping in with a safety net where the city and federal government has dropped the ball.

This horizontal network emerged not only from the practical on-the-ground experience of the Occupy community and decentralized online tactics like Anonymous, but also drew inspiration from teachers like IDP Lineage Mentor Sharon Salzberg and Buddhist scholar Robert Thurman.

Generosity is the heart of #OpSafeWinter, and it hopes to "inspire or incite people to look at their relationship with others through service to those on the streets."

The open set of tools provided
by the #OpSafeWinter hashtag
succeed in amplifying compassionate intentions.

(http://www.thelivingmoon.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10005/homeless_vet.jpg) (http://www.facebook.com/OpSafeWinterNYC)

This method breaks down the self/other boundary so often seen in relief organizations where I, a person of means, can give my time or money to help the amorphous suffering other. By breaking down this binary, #OpSafeWinter exposes the interdependence of suffering and provides tools for mutual aid.

We are, in effect, helping each other.

If you're interested in being involved in #OpSafeWinter, we recommend finding out if people are already active in your city and following them on Facebook and Twitter.

For New Yorkers, @opsafewinternyc is the twitter handle where you can find out about actions, donations, and suggested tools and missions in alleviating the suffering of those most vulnerable during the winter months. You are encouraged to act on your compassion with your unique skills and forms of contribution.

#OpSafeWinter: Anonymous fights homelessness worldwide (http://www.dailydot.com/news/op-safe-winter-anonymous/)

"Do something amazing this winter... that's the point."

So said the administrator of @OpSafeWinter (https://twitter.com/opsafewinter), the Twitter account heading up public relations for Anonymous' most ambitious project for 2013 and 2014.

We spoke to the Anonymous member via Twitter direct message for an exclusive interview on the umbrella project dubbed #OpSafeWinter (https://opsafewinter.org).

The goal is to get Anons and "civilians" out into the streets all over the world to save lives by giving the homeless and the critically poor the tools they need to survive at least one more season.

Because it is an international operation, including operatives on both sides of the Equator, the "winter" of the title continues all year long, switching hemispheres at the equinox. They will, essentially, never run out of winter. As New England faces the wrath of Hercules, Anonymous lines up to fight back with sleeping bags, mittens, and hot meals.

The operation was announced (http://pastebin.com/Hp772vVW) in a Pastebin November 7, when it became apparent that this season would bring some truly cruel weather to North America, Europe, and Asia. It quickly gained popularity among Anons, many of whom have been itching to get back into the streets for some direct, and positive, action.

(30) #OpSafeWinter - Turning Piccadilly Gardens Manchester Into An Emergency Food/Clothing/Bedding Bank (https://www.facebook.com/events/621270481317189/?ref=29&ref_notif_type=plan_user_joined&source=1)

On 23rd December Anonymous members and the general public wanting to help the homeless are invited to bring as many supplies as they can for the homeless of Manchester to survive this winter.

Christmas is supposed to be a time of charity; giving and new beginnings... So let's all come together as ONE and help people who are less fortunate at this time by sourcing items we no longer use that can benefit others..

If everyone was to bring a rucksack filled with goodies like toiletries; food; gloves; hat; sleeping bag; tent etc then we'd have a good chance of helping those who have to live on the streets... SURVIVE at least one more night. Far too many people are dying on our streets of hypothermia; septicaemia and pneumonia whilst their immune systems are 'down'.

Everyone is welcome and we'll be contacting all of the other outreach/grassroots operations currently working in Manchester to help out too.

This kind of do-gooder op is problematic for some older Anons, who remember the days when it was all done with keyboards for the lulz; they call this "moralfagging" with all the contempt they can muster, but since 2008, when Anonymous went up against Scientology in OpChanology (https://twitter.com/hashtag/opchanology), moralfagging has been an important part of the fractious collective.

It can also be highly effective. While actually eliminating homelessness is a problem even Anonymous can't tackle with confidence, making sure some people have food, warm clothes, and some basic tools like flashlights is the kind of thing that appeals to a very wide swathe of the population.

Indeed, in our interview OpSafeWinter made it clear that one doesn't need to be a part of Anonymous to participate and support.

Friday, for example, everyone in New York, Anon or not, was invited to participate in a potluck at 60 Wall Street at 6:30pm, and Occupy was one of the groups supporting the event. OpSafeWinter not only works directly with some organizations, but also just goes ahead and RT's and spreads the word when it becomes aware of similar efforts by other groups. As well, it incorporates many pre-existing localized Ops.

"OpSafeWinter is [an] Anonymous operation, which involves #OpFeedHomeless (https://twitter.com/search?q=%23OpFeedHomeless), #OpNatal (https://twitter.com/hashtag/opnatal) (Brazil) OpELE (France) ,#opXMAS (https://twitter.com/search?q=%23opXMAS) (Canada) based & OpHelpingHand (https://twitter.com/search?q=OpHelpingHand&src=typd) (Venezuela)," OpSafeWinter told us.

Activist and author Heather Marsh (https://georgiebc.wordpress.com/2013/05/24/binding-chaos/) lists #OpNatal #OpSafeWinter #OpXmas #OpUnaManoAmiga (https://twitter.com/search?q=%23OpUnaManoAmiga&src=hash) ?/ #OpHelpingHand #OpFeedTheHomeless #OpSyriaAid (coming soon) as participants in the umbrella operation.
"Operations cant work separated but with one goal and same cause to help to homeless people and [the] poor," added OpSafeWinter.

The Pirate Pad planning document (https://piratenpad.de/p/OpSafeWinter) lists 13 American cities participating, although the coordinator for Houston has retired after December burnout.

There are only 12 countries officially involved, but as support grows, the paperwork falls behind.

"That's not final number because we are adding twitter accounts with local initiatives regularly every day, about 80+ locations for now. Portland is doing epic things, as [are] Anon UK based activists."

The UK arm of the op (https://twitter.com/OpSafeWinterUK) is one of the most active, and one of the first to get involved. Almost a year ago this video of Anonymous Nottingham encountering a homeless man went viral, and almost certainly helped inspire the birth of the current operation.

Anonymous makes homeless man cry. (Original) - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyY0Bct6qz8)

Other organizations that are directly involved include WeSayNoClothing (https://www.youtube.com/user/WeAllSayNo) and Miriam's Kitchen (http://www.miriamskitchen.org) in Washington, D.C. "They are directly involved as organizations and some of donors wanted to stay anonymous. Also everyone can make some cooperation with organizations which shows some good will."

FoodNotBombs (http://www.foodnotbombs.net) worked with Occupy two years ago, and now Anonymous is helping to publicize their efforts through this Op.

We asked what regular people could do to help without donning a mask.

OpSafeWinter replied, "What is asked: warm clothes, gloves, sleeping bags, food.
Also individual actions.

Even if one person see some homeless person on street, not to bypass him but to stand, speak and show compassion and (if is possible) to give something as donation to that person.
That means much."

(http://www.thelivingmoon.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10005/please_help_580.jpg) (http://www.thelivingmoon.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10005/please_help_LG_copy.jpg)

"USA activists are trying to do pressure on cities where feeding of homeless is banned. That's not compassion."

He also cited Portland, Oregon, as the "shining star" of the Op; Portland has, of course, a long history of activism. It also has one of the milder climates in the continental U.S. at that latitude, which is fortunate for its homeless population.

While the operation has no hacking component, deliberately avoiding controversy, some of the ops under the umbrella have gone rogue.

"Brazil anons did defaces for OpNatal (OpXMAS). Brazil deface[d] the Prefeitura Municipal de Gastão Vidigal (http://gastaovidigal.sp.gov.br) website." That is a government site that was at the time touting improvements to the social safety net, the one whose shortcomings Anons were taking to the streets to rectify.

A group called TeamCrashers took responsibility for the deface.

Interestingly, Black Bloc (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Black-Bloc-Brasil/353035154737576), the bogeymen of the activist movement with a reputation for random physical violence and government infiltration, actively support OpSafeWinter and even handed out toys to children in Sao Paulo.

"In Brazil BlackBloc also supports op as Occupy is doing in USA somehow. I like when Black Bloc shared gifts to kids in Sao Paolo for Christmas." While the debate about whether Black Bloc is a group or a tactic rages on, the same could once have been said for Anonymous.

If Anonymous can turn Black Bloc into Santa, what can't they do?

"Yesterday this pile of blankets was all over the ground filthy, partially wet and frozen having been slept in the night before. I saw a D.C. city worker putting the stuff into what looked like a trash bag. Then this morning I walk by the same spot and see the blankets had been washed and folded... Made me smile"

Good job. Keep up The Good Work.

My current situation evolved from a number of homeless "adventures" beginning in 2002, and ending in 2007. Off and on.

- PS

I'm still at the computer every night, searching for "Morpheus", waiting for recruitment into something larger and more important. Something "purposeful". Still. Waiting.

There are still good people left in the world. That was amazing! Most of the time you hear about people living outside being harassed, beaten or shot down like dogs by the LEO gang and the like.

It's good to see a story about someone doing something... well... good for a change.
