(CNN) -- Emergency repairs began earlier this week on an energy unit at a nuclear power plant in southeastern Ukraine, and the problem has led to electricity shortages, Ukraine's Energy Ministry said. Details about what caused the problem, which the ministry first reported Tuesday, weren't immediately available.

(Reuters) - An accident at a nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhya in southeastern Ukraine poses no danger to health or the environment, energy authorities said on Wednesday, an assessment later corroborated by the French nuclear institute IRSN.

Energy Minister Volodymyr Demchyshyn said the accident occurred on Friday in one of the six blocks at Zaporizhzhya, Europe's largest nuclear power plant, and was caused by a short circuit in its power outlet system. The incident was "in no way" linked to power production, he told a news conference.

"There is no threat ... there are no problems with the reactors," said Demchyshyn, who took up his post in a new government only on Tuesday. He added that he expected the plant to return to normal operations on Dec. 5.

KIEV, Dec 3 (Reuters) - Ukraine's energy authorities said on Wednesday that an accident at a nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhya in the south-east of the country posed no danger and the plant would return to normal operations on Dec. 5.

"There is no threat ... there are no problems with the reactors," Energy Minister Volodymyr Demchyshyn, who took up his post in a new government only on Tuesday, told a briefing.

Demchyshyn, said the accident which happened on Friday in one of the six blocs at Zaporizhzhya, Europe's largest nuclear power plant, had been caused by a short circuit in the power outlet system and was "in no way" linked to power production.

In Vienna, the International Atomic Energy Agency said it had no immediate comment on the report.

Zaporizhia NPP restarts 3rd reactor unit shut down by automatic protection system week ago (http://www.capital.ua/en/news/36231-na-zaporozhskoy-aes-zapuskayut-avariynyy-energoblok)
Capital.ua. The Capital news from Ukraine.

The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant started to bring its reactor unit up to a minimum controllable power level at 04:27 Kyiv time on Friday, state-run Energoatom nuclear power company said.

The reactor unit will be connected to the power grid before 23:00 Kyiv time on the same day in accordance with the maintenance schedule, Interfax-Ukraine reported.

The automatic protection system disconnected the third reactor unit of the Zaporizhia NPP at 19:24 Kyiv time on November 28 due to damage caused to the coil connecting the house load transformer and unit transformer breakers. The automatic protection system responded in strict compliance with the protocol.

"The cold shutdown of the reactor proceeded normally, without radiological consequences," the NPP administration emphasized.

The unplanned disconnection of the third reactor unit of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant has been tentatively assessed as a "below scale/level 0" event by the INES International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale. This event has no safety implications.

The Zaporizhia NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe by its rated capacity. Its six VVER-1000 reactor units were built by the Soviet project V-320. The first reactor unit was started up in December 1984 and the sixth in October 1995.

Energoatom is the operator of all four nuclear power plants currently working in Ukraine: the Zaporizhia, Yuzhnoukrainsk, Rivne and Khmelnytsky power plants with 15 pressurized light water reactors and a total rated capacity of 13.835 gigawatts.

Zaporozhye nuclear plant

Seemorerocks: About the nuclear accident at Zaporozhye (http://robinwestenra.blogspot.com/2014/12/about-nuclear-accident-at-zaporozhye.html)

Thursday, 4 December 2014

[A rough translation from Yandex]

Local authorities keep information about Zaporozhye nuclear plant secret

One can only guess about the power of the explosion on the 3rd unit of Zaporizhzhya NPP -  there has been no official data on this core for two days, but yesterday the Ukrainian authorities, away from sin, has blocked a special forum of Ukrainian nuclear specialists on the Internet.

Political scientist Lev Vershinin put in his blog the following message with a link to his friend the engineer of this plant: "Not Pripyat, but very bad. We are doing what we can, but we can do little".

So what happened in Zaporozhye? We will try to reconstruct what happened.

On Monday evening, two popular Ukrainian news Agency, "Contekst - Prichernomorie" and "V Gorode", issued messages about emergency blackouts in Odessa "due to a power shortage causing the emergency shutdown of unit 3 Zaporizhzhya NPP". In "Odessaoblenergo" it was explained that the outage will be prolonged "because of difficulties with troubleshooting" on unit no.3.

Representatives of "Odessaoblenergo" stressed several times that the accident did not arise in networks, namely in the NPP).

Resumation of operation of the unit  is promised for 5 December.

Several strong explosions were heard on the night of 1-2 December in Zaporozhye.

Today the Net has photos allegedly of the exploded unit, but, as identified by the experts, they were made yesterday, and not in Zaporozhye.

And on the morning of 3 December, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine reported that there will be no comments regarding the accident in Zaporozhye "until the causes and consequences of the incident are established". Therefore, the accident at the nuclear power plant still took place.

Actually, there is nothing surprising in the fact that there was an accident at the Zaporizhzhya NPP. In September this year, a representative of Greenpeace Toby Munchmeyer warned about two threats to the station.

The first was a possible hit by a nuclear artillery projectile.

The second, a  problem with changing "power" station (declared NPP management) a transition from Russian TVEL fuel to American fuel, which the station could not "learn"). It is known that the shells from the Donbass in Zaporozhye flew, and there is no information about attacks. One thing remains - station has not "digested" American fuel.

Speaking about the possible consequences of the accident in Zaporozhye, Munchmeyer warned:
"A new Chernobyl would ruin not only Ukraine, but also a considerable part of Europe".

And - this is extremely important in context of what has happened - according to the Greenpeace representative, even "an accident on the grid can have disastrous consequences, as it would lead to failure of the cooling system of the nuclear reactor".

And what happened on the 1st and 2nd of December, is nothing more than the same accident on the grid, which Munchmeyer warned about.

Something doesn't seem to be right in this situation.
Virtual media blackout - although that's nothing new in the nuclear cartel's handbook.

Via Vladimir Suchan on Facebook -

"The third reactor in the nuclear power plant in Zaporozhye has been disconnected from the country's power system. Instead of 'getting back to normal,' new blanket blackouts (from 8:00 to 11 AM and from 4 to 10 PM) have been introduced."

Shutdown and blackouts in Zaporozhye

5 December 2014, 12:54 pm
After stopping one of the Zaporizhzhya NPP units and the ensuing ridiculous explanations of "experts" on violations of the transformers, finally, in our opinion there were distinct expert (comments on links below.

Meanwhile, the Kiev mode introduced new restrictions on the power supply. They will be operative during the morning and evening rush hours. That is, power outages have to be expected from 8 to 11 am and from 4 to 10 pm.

Energy Minister of Ukraine V.Demchishin urged Ukrainians to save electricity: include using washing machines only at night. "If you can wash and do the ironing at night, it will greatly help the system. These steps will enable us to avoid blackouts, balance the system and solve the problem in the near future."
