A friend gave me this map recently:
map.ipviking.com (http://map.ipviking.com)
What it does is show a running, real time sample of the attack traffic going on around the world. I'm having some major issues with DNS resolving, and can't figure out where in the line its happening (all my machines are impacted, so it isn't machine based..and the router seems clear, after checking everything and then a reset to reconfigure for good measure). I have blazing fast throughput, but resolving DNS can take a minute at times. Dial-up times... So my freind gave me that to see what all was happening as one more thing to look at.
It didn't take long to see a few primary targets the Chinese and Russians really LOVE to pound on like hammering a nail (Beijing and Wuxi, China in particular). One is in Seattle, and I can make a couple educated guesses there. There are a few things around Seattle I could see drawing that that attention. However, St Louis is another MAJOR target, and I can't figure for the life of me just what that could be? The main statistical handling for the Federal Reserve Bank is at the St Louis 'branch'...but what else is there, to stand out as it seems to there, from the entire nation as a whole?
I just can't figure it out.... Anyone else?
I don't like that site for two reasons:
1 - apparently, everybody is using it, something I always found suspicious;
2 - it uses honeypots to gather the data, so if they have more honeypots in one place than the others it looks like that place is a big target.

@Zorgon
Well now, you may just have it! That's as good as anything, and Missouri does seem to pop up in unusual ways for Homeland (remember the report that basically classified half the nation as possible domestic threats?).
@Armap,
Point taken on that.. I'd just started watching it myself, so it's something of interest more than useful. I'm not even sure what 'normal' looks like yet. It is something to watch at times though. Occasionally there will be a burst attack out of China or one of the other major nations that drops a whole mass of points at once. Whoever created the display was certainly creative about visual depiction.
