Most of those places are smaller than we think.
Many years ago I went to visit the ruins of a Roman village here in Portugal, ConÃmbriga (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Con%C3%ADmbriga), and although it was a relatively large place at the time I thought it was small.
PS: at the time I visited it it was not as restored as it is now, now it looks much better.
