Title: UK police have been storing 18 million Photos on their facial recognition system
Post by: astr0144 on February 02, 2015, 11:05:16 PM
UK police have been storing 18 million Photos of faces on their facial recognition system within the last 8 months...and its only just become known officially today to even some high up persons in authority...Many are of Criminals, but also many are of those who were not convicted...and others who just may not be for any known reason.

Apparently they are not allowed by Law to hold DNA or fingerprints on file at least for non convicted persons at least not long term...if at all ..

But there was no official law in place to prevent them from storing facial photographs on their system...

Just seen a discussion about it on BBC News...

Will add more information if it becomes available..
I cannot find any articles on it as yet...

Chances are there will be several wrote this next few days after the discussion on TV news  tonight..

Nice find Simon,

I will try to find time to read and analyse it..

There will probably be some further articles more in depth if this does not cover most of what the TV program shown.

Much Appreciated...

QuotePolice forces in England and Wales have uploaded up to 18 million "mugshots" to a facial recognition database - despite a court ruling it could be unlawful.

They include photos of people never charged, or others cleared of an offence, and were uploaded without Home Office approval, Newsnight has learned.

Photos of "hundreds of thousands" of innocent people may be on the database, an independent commissioner said.

The database complies with the Data Protection Act, police insisted.

Biometrics Commissioner Alastair MacGregor QC said he was concerned about the implications of the system for privacy and civil liberties.

Yes they can and big brother probably have done...but may not admit it. (Even though it may be obvious)

As far as I thought that they had said... they were placing photos on the UK Police database for mainly anyone who had been convicted for crimes or offences..and those also who may have been proven not guilty...

But I would find it hard to believe that that would amount to 18 million people or even a 3rd of that.. as they say some people have maybe upto 3 photos on their system. So they also have a large percentage of people who had not even been arrested or accused of anything...

Many may not care , but I suspect many would not want to be listed on their system..especially without even being informed or being aware that it existed..
