A new patent granted to aircraft, defense and security company Boeing is taking its cues from science fiction. Just like the glowing energy shields seen protecting troops, machines and even spacecraft in Star Wars and Star Trek, the design -- named "Method and system for shockwave attenuation via electromagnetic arc" -- uses energy to deflect potential damage.

As it is described, the system is not designed to prevent direct impact from shells or shrapnel; rather, it is designed to protect a target -- such as a vehicle or building -- from the damaging effects of shockwaves from a nearby impact.

The patent is for a shockwave attenuation system, which consists of a sensor capable of detecting a shockwave-generating explosion and an arc generator that receives the signal from the sensor to ionise a small region, producing a plasma field between the target and the explosion using lasers, electricity and microwaves.

This small plasma field would differ from the surrounding environment in temperature, density and/or composition. This would provide a buffer between the target and the explosion that would hinder the shockwaves from reaching and damaging the target.

"Such embodiments as described above may reduce the energy density of the shockwave by creating a second medium in the path of the advancing shockwave that reflects, refracts, absorbs and deflects at least a portion of the shockwave," the patent reads.

Because this system heats and ionises the air, it is eminently unsuitable for enveloping a target and being held in place for any length of time. That kind of force field is technically feasible -- physics students last year determined that an electromagnetic field could by used to hold a plasma shield in place -- but it would likely also deflect light, leaving anyone inside blind as a bat.

You can read the full specs included in Boeing's patent on the USPTO website.

Thought this was worthy of attention.

I saw a news article on MSM last week about NASA (I think) applying for a patent on a force field; didn't get to copy the link or anything due to the general craziness here at work plus me trying to move...

anybody else see it?

Active Shielding Concepts for the Ionizing Radiation in Space

Much ado has been made by various groups about the radiation hazards Astronauts would face in Space
Well it may not be an issue...
Lets have a look at a NASA contractor report

Contract NASw-502 Final Report Rev. 31 Jan. 1964

Space Sciences Laboratory
Missile and Space Division
GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY
Philadelphia, Pa.

Final Report
Contract NASw - 5 0 2
Period Covered: 1 Sept. 1962 - 31 Aug. 1963

Abstract:

Studies have been made on the problems of shielding a spacecraft from
ionizing radiation.Protons having energies between 100 and 1,000 MeV were taken as the radiation that should be excluded from the spacecraft's crew.
An electromagnetic field system using a toroidal shaped spacecraft with a
confined magnetic field is shown to be the lightest among those treated.

In general, the active shield weight is only 20% that of the passive shield
for high energy protons and for large sizes of spacecraft. The shield with a confined field weighs 30% of that for a shield using an unconfined field. If hatches are included, the use of spherical modules leads to spacecraft that are lighter than spheres, cylinders, or toruses. For spacecraft in the shape of a torus, a passively shielded hatch is not required because there are no junctions between oppositely directed magnetic fields. In that case, a spacecraft in the shape of a torus is lighter than the other shapes.

Shields for the Starship Enterprise: A Reality? - EISCAT Related Research

A team of scientists at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (part of the Science and Technology Facilities Council) are set to construct an experimental magnetic shield that would protect explorers in their journeys between the planets.

In the last year space agencies in the United States, Europe, China, Japan and India have announced their intention to resume human exploration of the Solar system, beginning with the Moon and perhaps ultimately moving on to Mars. But travel beyond the immediate vicinity of the Earth carries significant risks for astronauts, not the least of which is the exposure to sometimes high levels of radiation. Now a team of scientists at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (part of the Science and Technology Facilities Council) are set to construct an experimental magnetic shield that would protect explorers in their journeys between the planets. Dr Ruth Bamford will present this idea in her talk on Wednesday 18 April at the Royal Astronomical Society National Astronomy Meeting in Preston.

Cosmic rays and radiation from the Sun itself can cause acute radiation sickness in astronauts and even death. Between 1968 and 1973, the Apollo astronauts going to the moon were only in space for about 10 days at a time and were simply lucky not to have been in space during a major eruption on the sun that would have flooded their spacecraft with deadly radiation. In retrospect Neil Armstrong's 'one small step for Man' would have looked very different if it had.

I've read some of the research (and posted it here somewhere) that assessed the radiation shields for spacecraft.

The document showed that the technology is already available from what engineers know and can do now to build EM shields but there is a problem.  The amount of fuel required to power the shields is too high to lift and carry.  Current fuel types that can be used for manned space travel is not (efficient or safe?) enough was the conclusion.

QuoteThat is not all. Simple estimates of the power requirements
to maintain the charge of the spacecraft are mind-boggling.
One ampere of current at two billion volts amounts to 2,000
megawatts
the output of a good-size electric power plant.
Rough estimates suggest the current would exceed 10 million
amperes. The proposers have not spelled out how they hope
to charge the spacecraft to two billion volts in the first place.
Curiously, like the idea of inflating magnetic fields, the notion
of charging the spacecraft to shield the astronauts has re
ceived substantial attention and funding without a clear explanation
of how it might work.
https://engineering.dartmouth.edu/~d76205x/research/Shielding/docs/Parker_06.pdf

What is needed is either a much lower power shield system than, at least in the public domain, we currently have the technology to develop.  Failing that some sort of very efficient nuclear reactor would be needed to power the shields and probably the crafts deep space engines (yes just like the reactors and the impulse drives in Star Trek).

It didn't escape my notice that Lockheed Martin were claiming that the development of plasma fusion reactors is at an advanced stage.  These reactors are supposedly light and efficient enough to power deep space missions safely.

Either Lockheed are talking out of their arse holes or they are at a far more advanced stage in the black research.  This tech is deadly and will be kept from the public I can assure you.

Imagine putting the technology of EOS on a Space Ship along with the technology Spacemaverick posted in the OP :O

http://www.eostech.com/space/what-we-offer/space-surveillance

Space Debris

QuoteSpace debris, or near earth object (NEO) pollution, is an enormous hazard to deployed satellites and spacecraft which cross the path of the orbiting debris.

Using high powered 'eye safe' space laser systems we can track and catalogue the most potentially damaging pieces of debris. Once the debris is tracked it can be avoided.  Our proprietary laser tracking and astrometric techniques reduce conjunction volumes' error budgets by a factor of 100-1000 (ref AMOS 2013).

Space Ablation

QuoteAblation is the process of generating forces on objects by means of surface interactions with energy projected from a distant point. Laser beams, directed from earth to intersect with objects in space, generate significant forces if the interaction is carefully controlled.

Until now, the only way to avoid space debris was to manoeuvre away from it to prevent a collision, consuming fuel and reducing mission life. EOS is now fine-tuning technology that will allow pieces of space debris and other objects in space to be physically manoeuvred into a different orbit using long range high power plasma beam (ablation).

By using Adaptive Optics (AO) techniques, EOSSS is developing new tools for enhanced capability for low earth orbit (LEO) space management using coupled laser energy to space debris objects.  Laser guide stars, wavefront sensors and wavefront inversion tools are in development now to improve ground based imaging and to couple laser energy onto debris for orbital management of lighter debris approaching valuable assets.

EOS are the real deal.   ;)

Now imagine coupling that with EM management as SpaceMavy posted and You pretty much have a fully fledged Black OP Spaceship that has solved some serious problems of space travel as known to this planet.
