Having a look at this now. I do, however, consider any real thought of going to Mars extremely premature. I don't consider us to be anywhere near close to being technologically ready for this. One thing that Star Trek has also always implied, is that the overall tech tree required for spacefaring is also very large and complex. You need a lot of secondary technologies underlying the really obvious things.
Granted, I haven't been paying attention, but I haven't seen too many improvements in propulsion in particular since the Moon landing. We need close to FTL, or ideally better; Mars is really too far to go via conventional means. Any astronauts who go are also going to want to learn Permaculture beforehand, because they will need to live there until the orbits re-align so they can come home. I could believe that it might be viable to bootstrap a liveable atmosphere on Mars, but it would be a lot of work.
The will also no longer exists. Space exploration at this point is considered academic or theoretical as far as I know, and there is very little mainstream interest. It's just not practical when we've already got so many other problems down here. The 60s were a different time; but unfortunately, 9/11 genuinely destroyed America as a potentially great civilisation. That level of optimism does not exist any more; it is completely gone now.
