Yes, it seems this might be the longest time since I joined, for the forum to remain down. Z has done a really good job of keeping it up and going, with some sort of break every now and then!! This time it may be/has been one of the most difficult for him to get corrected!! And, according to the Z's notice, he is still trying to determine the continuing cause of the problem!!
I certainly have missed getting on the forum these several days, and am glad we at least have a temporary way to get back in, to talk together here!!
Took so long this time because
a) the server was sold to new owners and they moved us from a dedicated server to a shared server and their Monkeys had NO IDEA what the issue waa. When a top admin looked at it they told me WHAT to fix but not HOW or WHERE
b) I am getting old and forgot that the first time we had this issue I moved the froum from /forum to /forum1
So moving it to /forum2 has restored it but we still do not know the SOURCE
It appears that the php.ini file was set to ALLOW PERSISTENT CONNECTIONS
That is okay on a dedicated server but not on a shared server
What it means is that when a person opens a query on the database it stays open Default reset is 8 hours of non use. A shared server allows only 10 per person (on Globat) That is normally enough as the connection is usually a fraction of a second.
The php.ini was changed to turn that OFF but it still did not reset. We were told we must close all current open connections Well HOW? LOL
If the queries are from a robot like google search we have no way to close it
Moving the forum to /forum2 temporarily drops all connections and it loaded up intact
So there are NO ISSUES with the forum files (save I need to update a new theme) The database is intact and backed up ( the first time we had issue at the beginning we loaded an older copy of the database needlessly and lost two weeks
The database and the forum files are two different animals. So each needs its own backup
Now that I know where to fix it next time I will move it and redirect right away and then talk to the Monkeys :P

or robot attacks...
The search engines quey the website by the miilions daily driving traffic figures high. I have a robot.txt that will stop the HONEST search engine from doing that that I will add later (have to tell it only /forum2 files as I don't want them to stop inzing the website
But spambots and sneaky hackers don't play by the rules
We opened a new copy of the forum and before I could even set the permissions a spammer already logged in and posted porn Not even 5 minutes after the initial setup
Z, might need to remind everyone that using more than a word or two in the search box will make it get wiggy...

Good heavens! I don't get here daily, so I didn't notice anything until yesterday. Someone should give that Zorgon character a raise. I think he's overworked and underpaid.

Well done "Z" for managing to get the forum back online and working out how to do it.
I am sure it must have been a bit of a nightmare and scare along with a headache.
I am sure many members did not know what to do with themselves without being able to access the forum.

Looking in on Pegasus at least once every two days or so has largely become autonomic for me. I didn't panic, but I did wonder what was up. I also assumed that Zorgon would be working on it. I'm glad the place is going again.

And during this fight against monkey, php, sml....
I was keeping talks to Zorgon...and later...when he's still trying to recovery the forum....and he did it!!!
Congrats ! I'll send to you a yellow gift !!!
So glad to have the forum back up :D Zorgon, thank you for your hard work. Good luck with those monkeys! :)

Z, might need to remind everyone that using more than a word or two in the search box will make it get wiggy...
Use "-----" in the forum search using a phrase like .... the fox ate a chicken
will return EVERY post that has any of those words in it whereas "the fox ate a chicken" will only search for that phrase
However it was the number of persistent connections that was the issue. The connections didn't close
So you open a pm that is one query, you open three threads in three tabs that is 3 queries and so on
SHOULD be okay now
The forum has them set off BUT the main server had the php.ini override as the website has unlimited connections.
Thing is with the modern high speed servers the persistent connection is not needed All it does is keep it open like a cache so it loads faster if your still using it
On a PLUS note they did a free survey on the website to check loading speeds etc Livingmoon loads in 3 seconds :D
Now I need to find a new dark skin I will test them on the new forum first
Then I can drop this one and update the forum... so in a few weeks there may be changes and glitches but that won't effect the database
And I have a full copy of the forum (this one is a clone literally) so if things go bump I just reupload this one
WoW skin is no longer compatible. This is WoW but modified
Very happy to see we're back! :)
