A man was severely burned, and both his dogs burned alive in boiling hot water inside the normally temperate Panther Hot Springs located near Challis, Idaho.
Challis, Idaho is the exact same location seeing the EARTHQUAKE SWARM, and where the USGS installed new monitoring equipment this past year.

Hiker Burned, 2 Dogs Die After Leaping Into Idaho Hot Spring
by Reuters
SALMON, Idaho — A man hiking through a national forest in Idaho suffered severe burns and his two dogs were scalded to death when both canines plunged into a hot spring and he jumped in after them to try to save his pets, authorities said on Tuesday.
The freak accident occurred last week in the Panther Creek Hot Springs, a popular spot in the sprawling Salmon-Challis National Forest, about 50 miles (80 km) northwest of the tourist town of Salmon in east-central Idaho.
Temperatures at Panther Creek, usually mild enough for human bathing, had apparently grown dangerously high, possibly from drought conditions that may have curtailed cool water flows that normally mix with the springs' geothermally heated groundwater, forest spokeswoman Amy Baumer said.
The hiker, who was not publicly identified, was out walking through the mountains with his dogs last Thursday when both pets leaped into the hot springs, killing one animal outright and prompting the man to plunge into the searing water to rescue the other, authorities said.
The second dog later died of its burns after being taken to veterinarians for emergency treatment.
While forest visitors are advised to test the temperature of hot springs before immersing themselves, the injured hiker acted on instinct in an attempt to save his pet, Lemhi County Chief Deputy Sheriff Steve Penner said.
A U.S. Forest Service firefighting crew that happened to be in the area came to the man's aid and arranged for a medical helicopter to fly him to a hospital for treatment of severe burns, according to Penner.
Panther Creek draws dozens of visitors annually, and forest managers were unaware of a similar incident ever occurring in the 107-year history of the Salmon-Challis, which spans 4.3 million acres (1.7 million hectares) and numerous hot springs, said Ken Gebhardt, a district ranger.
"The forest is very interested in doing what it can to better inform the public about this accident in hopes of preventing another tragedy," he said.
Hot springs, the subject of travel guides and copious online commentary by outdoor enthusiasts, are widely dispersed across the Northern Rockies and other regions where volcanic activity and geothermal features are intertwined
In Northern Nevada there are areas that have Fumaroles. When we drove through the area there are many literally at the edge of the highway..
Now being geologically inclined, the pretty sulfur and other mineral deposits attracted my attention. Several were fences off... There was a ranger just happend to be there so being new to the US I asked him if specimen collecting was allowed in that area
He said yes... but warned me..
"Be careful... last year a fellow went for a close look and a new one opened up beneath him. He was boiled alive in minutes"

Pretty to be sure but they start out as molten hot mud... and pop up without warning

And if one opens beneath your feet without warning :D

The fact that the hot spring was scalding hot when it was safe before can be an indicator that the region is becoming more active. A good test to tell if it is from lack of cold water or increased activity would be to test the acid level... because the hotter water would mean more sulfur dioxide is coming up (that is what makes the yellow crystals) and the sulfuric acid level would be high
And that would greatly increase the burns.
That one movie Volcano showed the lake turning to sulfuric acid... Yup that would happen... and it smells like rotten eggs (sulfur dioxide) The hotter the water, the more SO2 dissolves, the stronger the acid

I probably should just walk away but I have to ask
is that the adult version of what the kids used to yell at each other
eat s h I t and die?
My daughter and I had numerous conversations with my grandkids during our trip to Yellowstone. They saw adults ignoring barriers and warning signs in their attempts to get "better" pictures. Fortunately, we didn't witness any tragedies. I feel sorry for the dogs dying in such a manner. I feel sorry for the owner too, but why didn't he have his pets under control?

We thinks Zorgon was leading up to his Forest Gump quote:
"Stupid is as Stupid does", and just playing the audience to see who would jump in... ;)
