WATCH: Yeti finally caught on camera

SPANISH ski resort bosses have combed part of the Pyrenees after this picture appearing to show a mysterious Yeti-style creature went viral on the Internet.

Seems like it has to be a Hoax !

A skier sounded the alert after posting the photo taken at Formigal in northeastern Spain on a popular website with the message: "Strange animal spotted in Formigal. What the hell is this?."

The picture, retweeted thousands of times, sparked a search by ski resort owners Aramon and a frenzied debate over whether a Spanish Yeti was on the loose or if it was a bear, Photoshop montage or even a soldier wearing mountain camouflage.

The mystery remained unsolved last night, although skiers were being reassured there was no cause for alarm.

A spokesman for the resort, which hosted the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships in 2008, confirmed a search of the area had been conducted after an "alleged Yeti sighting."

He said: "We have spoken to the witnesses of the sighting to identify the area in which it took place and after combing the area we have found nothing.

"We believe therefore that there is no cause for alarm and that visitors' security is guaranteed.

"In any case we will remain alert."

The mystery man behind the photo, who posted it on a popular Internet forum under the user name Kangaroo, sparked the alarm by writing: "This morning skiing in Formigal with friends we've come across this. What the hell is it?

"We've told the ski resort but they haven't taken us seriously.

"I bet there's something on the loose out there. I know what I saw."

Former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer Fonsi Nieto were among those who joined in the debate the photo sparked, tweeting: "Is there a bear in Formigal? Be careful.

Others joked the animal was Snowflake, the famous albino gorilla who lived at Barcelona Zoo from 1966 to 2003, back from the dead.

He was put down after being diagnosed with an unusual form of skin cancer.

The Yeti, also known as the Abominable Snowman, is an ape-like creature taller than an average human said to inhabit the Himalayas.

The scientific community generally regards the Yeti as a legend given the lack of conclusive evidence.

Experts in Nepal raise doubts over 'Yeti' footprint

Experts in Nepal raise doubts over 'Yeti' footprint

December 3, 2007 - 8:38PM

Mountaineering and wildlife experts in Nepal say they doubt whether footprints found by a United States team from a science fiction program are those of a Yeti.

The host and crew from Destination Truth spent about a week in the foothills of Mount Everest and returned to the capital Kathmandu last week claiming they had found footprints belonging to the legendary creature.

"The footprints may be from a Himalayan bear," Ang Tshering Sherpa, the president of Nepal Mountaineering Association, said today after looking at pictures of the prints.

"It is believed that Yetis have only four toes but the footprints recorded by the US team have five toes," said Sherpa, whose father went unsuccessfully looking for the legendary beast in the 1950s.

The Yeti - described as a massive half-human, half-ape-like creature - has captured the imagination of explorers and climbers in the Himalayas for generations.

Dozens of costly expeditions have taken place, none of which have proved the existence of the beast.

After seeing what he thought was a fleeting glimpse of a Yeti in 1986, climbing legend Reinhold Messner began investigating the myths and stories that surround it.

In his 1998 book My Quest for the Yeti, Messner concludes that it only exists in peoples' imaginations and the Himalayan black bear was probably behind most sightings.

Destination Truth - which investigates the existence of mythical creatures - is being made for an American science fiction channel.

Host Joshua Gates said on Saturday the program would further investigate the footprints, which were found last week on the bank of the Manju River, 150 kilometres north-east of Kathmandu.

"The footprint is 13 inches (33 centimetres) long and the toes span nine inches (23 centimetres) across," Gates said at a hotel in Kathmandu.

"This is really an intriguing piece of evidence and we all feel a little bit unable to explain what we saw," he said.

But Laxmi Manandhar, a spokesman at the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, said: "People living in the high Himalayas believe in this strange creature called a Yeti but nobody has actually seen it.

"The footprint castings brought by the US television crew are strange, but there is no supporting evidence to back up the claim that these are footprints of the Yeti."
