A swarm of thousands of crabs headed in the same direction in the Pacific is baffling scientists
Filmed last year just released.
"It was unusual. In the past, we've noticed aggregations of breeding crabs hanging around the ocean floor, or migrating onto land if they're terrestrial," Jesús Pineda, a researcher at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) told Motherboard. "But these particular crabs weren't responding to food, or migrating, or reproducing. This was something different."
And while scientists know that these crabs move up and down the water column to feed, usually retreating during the day to deep, low-oxygen waters to avoid predators, they say they've never seen anything like this swarm.

Seeing that this was from last year, I think the question should be "were they running from something?" :)
Well there has been a lot of sightings of unusual swarming type of activity including Dolphins in super mega pods off the Ca coast.
Then there has been the years of odd sulfur smells off the same coast where these crabs are normally in Santa Barbara area people are treating it like a joke mostly.
QuoteI smelled sulphur on Mesa Lane last night around 11:00 PM. Anyone know what was going on?

Looks like they have a "secret" Volcano there.
QuoteThe volcano became a bit of a tourist attraction in the 1880s, as the stagecoach route at that time went along the beach right by the site. The height of the volcano's activity was in the early 1880s, when flames 10 feet high were reported, and rocks were flung into the air. One observer described the sulfurous gases as "almost suffocating." This, plus the deep beach sands and the dangers of high tides and storms, must have made for quite the adventurous ride for stagecoach passengers. The Rincon volcano settled down soon after; nevertheless, one enterprising gentleman still tried to turn a quick buck by charging admission to the volcano.

If there is no connection to all of ongoing and increasing sea animal deaths it is quite an coincidence.

I suppose that's because they only published their work about it now (available here (https://peerj.com/articles/1770/)).

The dying has not stopped but related deaths no way to know as the deaths cover the whole coast from Ak-Mexico and of course the rest of the world too.
