Title: History of the UK Population
Post by: astr0144 on June 10, 2016, 08:34:11 PM
History of the UK Population.

With all the talk about the concerns of the EU referendum and migration concerns in the EU or U.K..

I thought that I would have a look to see what the census figures suggest as to how the population may have altered in the last 50 years..and in particular since the 1980 /90s that was a major recession in the UK as well as out of curiosity what it was over the last 2000 years.

Some of the SUGGESTED results maybe concerning...

The question maybe can we trust the figures indicated.

This shows the estimated Census Population records since the 1900s.

It includes two World Wars. WW1 =1914/1918 and WW2 = 1939 to 1945

you can see how from 1941.. that even after 40 years to 1981 that the population had only increased by 7 to 8 million..

It had been severely slowed down between 1941 to 1961 for 20 yrs...increasing only by 3 million. from 38 to 41 million.

The Census records are done and released on a 10 yr basis..that seems to be from the 1st or 2nd year each decade..eg 1901 then 1911, then 1921 etc.. (I think the official  Census started in the early 1800s..)

This information is from Wikpedia..

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demography_of_England

1901   30,072,180   +10.4%
1911   33,561,235   +11.6%
1921   35,230,225   +5.0%
1931   37,359,045   +6.0%
1941   38,084,321   +1.9%
1951   38,668,830   +1.5%
1961   41,159,213   +6.4%
1971   43,460,525   +5.6%
1981   45,978,080   +5.8%
1991   48,197,672   +4.8%
2001   49,138,831   +2.0%
2011   53,012,456   +7.9%

between 1961 to 2001 over 40 years.. it remained within just a 8 million increase.. from approx 41 to 49 million.

It seems it only increased approx 2 to 2.5 million every 10 years between this 40 year period..

1961   41,159,213   +6.4%
1971   43,460,525   +5.6%
1981   45,978,080   +5.8%
1991   48,197,672   +4.8%
2001   49,138,831   +2.0%
Then in 2011 it was suggested as being 53 Million.
2011   53,012,456   +7.9%

(That was an increase of about 4 million in that 10 yr period..)

but this website suggests that it was 63 million in 2011..and even 58 million in 2001..

http://worldpopulationreview.com/countries/united-kingdom-population/

QuoteThe last UK census was carried out in 2011, showing a population of 63,181,775, increased from 2001's census figure of 58,789,194....

Then In 2016... it is now suggested by the BBC that it is 65 Million.

so in 15 years its increased by 16 million.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7057765.stm

QuotePopulation 'to hit 65m by 2016'

The population of the UK is set to increase by 4.4 million to 65 million by 2016, according to new projections.

So what is really going on I wonder...and of what % are the extra 16 million original UK citizens..

This shows the History of the last 7000 years... as far back as 5000 yrs BC..

it seems around time of Christ it was only between 1.5 to 1.7 million and was still under 2 million upto a 1000 yrs later in the 1100s..

look how it increased to around  at 4.8 million by  1348 and reduced severely by 1450 to under 2 million.. the Population more than halved during just over a  generation (of about 100 yrs)

I think it was the Black Death Plague that effected that..

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Death

It only reached 5.3 million by the 1650s.. and 8 million by the 1800s

then 100 yrs later it had hit 30 million... a HUGE jump in one or two generations..

First of all, one question: are you talking about England or the UK?

Whoops  :-[ seems I have made a bit of a boo boo !  :D

Got some of  the facts mixed up...Well noted ArMaP..

I put this in the Yahoo search engine  "uk population 1950 to 2016" and both the U.K and England Wikipedia option came up..
.The England version somehow caught my eye, even thou now I can see it was lower in the ranking, but they were both on page 1.

(If I write this in the yahoo search engine "England population 1950 to 2016" you get the England Wikipedia site but don't see the UK Wikipedia version on page 1.  ???)

That may explain the lower than expected figures shown for England as opposed to the Whole UK...

Maybe I should have included BOTH..but have mixed up some of the other non Wikipedia links that may refer to the U.K and NOT England..

I need to redo a similar thing for the United Kingdom.. at least from the 1900s..

However the England version may be more interesting over the long term periods....

This link does not show it going back for the U.K more than the 1900s

Here are the figures for the U.K between 1901 to 2011..

for some reason they have missed out the 1931 to 1941 period and wrote it as 1931 to 1951 ( A 20 yr period instead of a 10 yr period.)

Also for some reason they show the figures BETWEEN a 10 yr period... NOT at each period...eg instead of showing 1901...as one figure  like they did for the England version... they show the figure as a period of 1901 to 1911..

UK population change between 1901 to 2011

1901 – 1911   38,237,000
1911 – 1921   42,082,000
1921 – 1931   44,027,000
1931 – 1951   46,038,000
1951 – 1961   50,225,000
1961 – 1971   52,807,000
1971 – 1981   55,928,000
1981 – 1991   56,357,000
1991 – 2001   57,439,000
2001 – 2011   59,113,000
2011 – 2021   63,182,000

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demography_of_the_United_Kingdom

This is the England Comparison...

1901   30,072,180
1911   33,561,235
1921   35,230,225
1931   37,359,045
1941   38,084,321
1951   38,668,830
1961   41,159,213
1971   43,460,525
1981   45,978,080
1991   48,197,672
2001   49,138,831
2011   53,012,456

I was going to show the figures side by side...but with the confusion between how the two versions are shown..Im not sure how they would match..

Maybe like this..

                  United Kingdom   v    England
1901 – 1911   38,237,000      ...  30,072,180
1911 – 1921   42,082,000           33,561,235
1921 – 1931   44,027,000           35,230,225
1931 – 1951   46,038,000           37,359,045 /38,084,321
1951 – 1961   50,225,000           38,668,830
1961 – 1971   52,807,000           41,159,213
1971 – 1981   55,928,000           43,460,525
1981 – 1991   56,357,000           45,978,080
1991 – 2001   57,439,000           48,197,672
2001 – 2011   59,113,000           49,138,831
2011 – 2021   63,182,000          53,012,456
