QuoteLet's hope you didn't eat a hamburger before clicking on this story.

A former U.S. Department of Agriculture scientist has come forward with a startling tale of how a substance known as "pink slime" has been embedded in about 70 percent of ground beef sold in the U.S. — a topic ABC News investigated for a segment Wednesday night.

"Pink slime" is largely made up of connective tissue that used to be reserved only for dog foods. It was not classified as "meat" because it was largely seen as unfit for human consumption. It also contains ammonia, which is used to kill off bacteria so people who eat it do not get sick.

But in the early 90s, former undersecretary of agriculture Joann Smith decided that it was meat, allowing it to enter the human food chain. When she left her post in 1993, she immediately took a job with Beef Products, Inc. on their board of directors

Thank goodness I am a vegetarian!  And I select only organic foods, with the most processed being sprouted grain bread.

That hambarfer/McNausea stuff is NOT food.

cow patty mushrooms are natural, and some people eat 'em for their
hallucinogenic properties but i'm pretty sure they are even worse for you than mcnausea. :D

i'm a believer in, the closer it is to its original form (minus the blood), the better, particularly fruits, veggies, beans and grains. but some grains i just can't handle if the usa isn't cooked out of them first, such as corn.  i think i'm slightly allergic to corn.

i love cheese.  cheese and me are friends, particularly since the high protein content helps to maintain stable blood sugar levels for longer than most fruits and veggies.

Well folks... it looks like Internet outcries DO work sometimes

'Pink slime' beef off US school menu

QuoteSchools across the US are to be allowed to stop serving so-called "pink slime" beef to their pupils at mealtimes.

In a statement, the US Department of Agriculture said schools buying beef from a central government scheme could now choose from a range of options.

The term has become used to describe a type of beef trimming commonly found in school and restaurant beef in the US.

Reports it was widely used in schools prompted a popular outcry, although the beef is certified as safe to eat.

Social media campaigns and an online petition sprung up to oppose the use of the product. The beef's producer led a campaign to explain it was nutritional and safe.

Last year, British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver publicly criticised the product on his now-defunct US TV show, and McDonald's recently said it would phase out the use of "pink slime" in its burgers.

Quote... McDonald's recently said it would phase out the use of "pink slime" in its burgers.

"Phase out..."  As in...how many decades?  Why not just stop altogether?  Oh, right.  A cheap alternative is needed - one that will likely be worse, but will quietly be phased in.

I don't trust McDungheap in any way, shape or form!
