QuoteWASHINGTON –  The Army said Friday it has determined that suicide was the cause of death of a two-star general who was found dead in his home on a military base in Alabama.

Maj. Gen. John Rossi was found dead July 31 at Redstone Arsenal, two days before he was to assume command of Army Space and Missile Defense Command.

He is the first Army general to commit suicide on active duty since record-keeping began in 2000, according to the Army. Military suicides soared earlier this decade and remain a major source of concern; they typically have affected lower-ranking military members.

Rossi, a West Point academy graduate and an air defense artillery officer by training, had just moved onto Redstone Arsenal and was scheduled to be promoted to lieutenant general when he took command of Space and Missile Defense Command.

A written statement by the Army on Friday made no mention of what might have prompted Rossi to take his own life.

The Rossi family issued a statement through the Army expressing thanks for wide support and urging those who may need suicide-prevention help to seek it immediately.

"To the Army, he was Maj. Gen. Rossi," it said. "To us, he was John -- husband, dad."

"We ask for the time and space to grieve in private, and for the Army to continue to better understand suicide, and to help and treat those in need," the family statement added. "For our family, this has been an incredibly painful time, and we ask that you continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers. To all the other families out there, to the man or woman who may be facing challenging times, please seek assistance immediately. Compassionate and confidential assistance is available."

He did cause some headaches back in March saying the National Guard brigades weren't ready for intense operations as regular army brigades.

I agree with Zorgon this needs watching... A general kills himself two days before assuming command of one of the mega mojo elite units?

Bovine feces.

Scorched earth is an expression that means, if I'm not mistaken, destroying all things that may be useful to the enemy when we have access to them, like people burning their crops before running away from an invading force.

Yes it was an old article but one of the top search returns on Gen. Rosi that's why I posted it.

This whole thing could just be coincidence but it is unusual.

We have an update about the death of Major General John Rossi, who was found dead in his home on Redstone Arsenal Sunday afternoon.

We have learned that Rossi's family will remain on Redstone Arsenal for the time being, assisted by a military casualty assistance officer.

According to the Space and Missile Defense Command/ Army Forces Strategic Command Mrs. Rossi is originally from El Paso Texas, and the family is tentatively planning a memorial service at Fort Bliss, Texas.

The circumstances surrounding the death have not been released but we do know that the US Army Criminal Investigation Command has the case.
http://www.cid.army.mil/index.html...see below
They have not said that foul play is suspected.

The military is conducting the autopsy at Fort Campbell in Tennessee.

Rossi was to take command of the US Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command on August 2nd. He was to take over for the outgoing Lieutenant General David Mann who was set to retire but will now remain in his position indefinitely.

General Officers must be nominated by the President and approved by Congress and Congress will not go back into session until September. They will remain in session for only a few weeks until they break again in October.

Redstone Arsenal's Senior Commander Lieutenant General Larry Wyche released the following statement:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Maj. Gen. John G. Rossi's family," Lt. Gen. Larry Wyche, Army Materiel Command deputy commanding general and Redstone Arsenal senior commander said in a news release. "We share their grief during this time of loss. Our priority right now is to take care of the family, ensuring they have all the resources they need during this critical time."

Check back for updates.

Army: Two-star's death ruled a suicide

Maj. Gen. John Rossi, who this summer was just days away from taking command of U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command, died by suicide, the Army announced Friday.

"This is a tremendous loss for the Rossi family and, indeed, our entire Army family," the Army said in a statement. "Maj. Gen. Rossi was a respected leader, valiant warrior and trusted friend who gave more than 33 years of service to this nation."

Rossi, 55, died July 31 in his on-post home at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. He most recently served as the commanding general of the Army Fires Center of Excellence and Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Before that, he served as the director of the Army Quadrennial Defense Review Office in the Pentagon.

"We appreciate the kindness and support of our extended Army family as we have worked through these difficult days," Rossi's family said in a statement provided by the Army. "To the Army, he was Maj. Gen. Rossi. To us, he was John, husband, dad."

Rossi's family also asked for time and space to grieve in private.

They also asked for the Army to "continue to better understand suicide, and to help and treat those in need," the statement said. "For our family, this has been an incredibly painful time, and we ask that you continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers. To all the other families out there, to the man or woman who may be facing challenging times, please seek assistance immediately. Compassionate and confidential assistance is available."

Rossi's death came as a shock to the Army, as he was just days away from assuming command of Army Space and Missile Defense Command. He had arrived at Redstone Arsenal just days before his death, after relinquishing command of Fort Sill in July. He was to succeed Lt. Gen. David Mann as commander of SMDC.

Incoming commander for Army Space and Missile Defense Command dies
In its statement, the Army said Rossi's death is "a painful reminder of the tragedy of suicide as we continue to better understand its causes and warning signs."

"While we have focused our attention on young people – who make up the bulk of our force and for whom suicide is the second leading cause of death nationwide – the most recent data show middle-aged Americans are the fastest-growing at-risk population," the Army said. "Suicide knows no common race or age, gender or position."

Rossi grew up on Long Island, New York. He graduated from West Point in 1983 and was commissioned as an air defense artillery officer, according to a biography provided by the Army.

During his time in the Army, Rossi served in the United States, Korea, Germany, Southwest Asia and Iraq, commanding at every level from battery to the Fires Center of Excellence.

He is survived by his wife, Liz, and their three children and one grandchild.

Thanks for the update.
I went on the Army.mil, the Space Command .mil site and tried searching for General Rosi. Nothing, nada, zip. No mention of him at all nor any circumstances for Mann to remain as commanding officer.

http://scallywagandvagabond.com/2016/10/major-general-john-rossi-suicide-death/

Of note, the US Army for reasons not necessarily understood declined to make any mention of what might have prompted Major General John Rossi to take his own life. An omission that perhaps betrays the very attitude of the armed services that may have left one accomplished military man deeply conflicted?

That said a US government official close to the investigation told USA Today 'that it seemed' that Rossi, who had served over 33 years in uniform was overwhelmed by his responsibilities.

The investigation didn't reveal any factor, such as misconduct or substance abuse, that could have triggered Rossi's suicide, the official said. Also not mentioned is why a veteran would suddenly be overwhelmed by duties that he had spent an entire lifetime preparing himself for?

Ironically, a few months before killing himself, Rossi had spoken in March at a conference about suicide in the armed forces, saying: 'We are ultimately responsible for soldiers both on and off duty.'

The Rossi family issued a statement through the Army expressing thanks for wide support and urging those who may need suicide-prevention help to seek it immediately.

'To the Army, he was Major General Rossi. To us, he was John — husband, dad,' the family wrote.

But there's another context here as well, and that's a series of space-related news stories this past week (that I haven't blogged about yet), that does make the timing of General Rossi's death at least "a little unusual" to my mind. Indeed, General Rossi, like all military officers, would have regularly undergone complete physicals, and this would have been a normal factor in the determination of fitness for command, particularly for a sensitive command like this.

The jury is still out on this one, of course, but in the meantime, speculation is the order of the day, and if their was foul play involved, then the question becomes one of motivation: the "why" would lead to the "who", and as of now, it's anyone's guess, and a case of "you tell me"...
