Title: Mysterious illness tied to marijuana use on the rise in states with legal weed
Post by: rdunk on December 29, 2016, 02:01:11 AM
Definitely not a UFO topic! Since we have occasionally seen a member(s) who speak in the positive about the use of marijuana, I am posting this information on the possibility that it might could be of help to any who might be using! This is a CBS News article that addresses a reoccurring problem experience for some that has been difficult to diagnose.

CBS News
Jonathan Lapook December 28, 2016

NEW YORK -- For more than two years, Lance Crowder was having severe abdominal pain and vomiting, and no local doctor could figure out why. Finally, an emergency room physician in Indianapolis had an idea.

"The first question he asked was if I was taking hot showers to find relief. When he asked me that question, I basically fell into tears because I knew he had an answer," Crowder said.

The answer was cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome, or CHS. It's caused by heavy, long-term use of various forms of marijuana. For unclear reasons, the nausea and vomiting are relieved by hot showers or baths.

Legalization at the state level has definitely made it easier to obtain here.  I didn't see anywhere that the article addressed how much was being used.  Overusing anything can cause problems.

Yes....but since the article info is said relative to the legalized states, one might could assume the noted problem is either promoted by increased use or more often use. Or..............maybe the physical problems are promoted/caused by one not having to worry any longer about getting caught and going to jail!! :))

I suspect that the prospect of being arrested kept some people out of the ER.  I know the tax revenue from marijuana has been a boon here in Colorado.

Dr. Kennon Heard specializes in toxicology at University Hospital, and has also worked at Denver Health.  I can say, having worked at both those institutions, that his point of view is likely skewed by his working environment.  Both hospitals are safety net hospitals, and are more likely to see a population that will overuse recreational substances.

"Nausea and vomiting" ... "mysterious illness"

RoFL.

Leave it to the experts doc!

That's called a "Whitey" , because the colour will surely drain from your face... haha.

I've not had a whitey in years.

It affects those who can't handle what they smoke, can sometimes catch regular users off guard if they are experimenting with breeds.

Solution? Find weed that agrees with you, or alternatively, just leave smoking to the real adults ^_^

They are actually usually caused by a drop in blood pressure due to the sudden intake of large amounts of nicotine rather than weed I think.

Mm, maybe. But maybe not.

The best whiteys are achieved smoking pure weed, rather than with tobacco.

Haha, my friend was chonging on a purey when she said "I can see the rainbow" .... weeeeee badonk!

Hit the floor like a sack of potatoes haha.

I was brought round from a whitey the once, I was dreaming, and somebody in my dream was like "Sinny! Sinny! Sinny!"

I open my eyes and I'm getting slapped round my face by mates Grandad "Sinny! Wake up girl!"

Haha , ahhh.

Then this other time when my legs really wouldn't work, and my mates had to practically carry me two miles to dump me at my door step!

Jesus. I'd love to be a teenager again.

I'm allergic to the stuff, so maybe that's just as well.  I'm allergic to calamari too, which is just annoying.

Speaking of "whitey".................a little more info!  ;)

Urban Dictionary:

"whitey"

A whitey is a feeling that happens on random. It isn't because you're a "lightweight" or "first timer". It can happen because you didn't eat something before, such as doing a wake &bake. (Toking fat bong rips in late morning on a stomach that's been empty for the while you slept can do your body dirty.) It can happen when you mix marijuana with alcohol or cigarettes. It can happen from swallowing some smoke; causing irritation to your stomach lining. It can happen because you're in or around heat. Or it can be because you've hit some moldy hemp. (Ps-CHECK YOUR WEED BEFORE YOU HIT.)

NO MATTER HOW MUCH OR HOW LITTLE YOU SMOKE, it can happen to ANYBODY.
-After a hit or two usually, a bad dizziness lightheaded feeling takes place and your vision gets messed with. Whether you're sitting or standing you start to blank in &out. When you blank out, the feeling is like being dead. Your body is heavy and useless and you can't move or speak, but you can hear what's going on around you. When everything starts to become clearer all the shaded areas are like sepia colored. Commonly everything feels either extremely hot, or extremely cold. Chills start to form. Your face loses color and begins to turn WHITE, or widely pale. Then sometimes you vomit from nausea then usually end the high with passing out completely.
When you wake up after an hour or two you start to feel better. A little bit hungry, but a WHOLEEE lotta hungry.

It is definitely one of the scariest things to experience. Be careful everyone.

"Why did jay keep saying her face was melting?"
"She was throwing a mean ass whitey"

One of my patients said I was ruining his high.  I told him that the combination of his lisinopril and his pot had tanked his blood pressure.  Fortunately, he's a DNR,  so if he croaks himself, I don't have to do CPR.

Yep.  That's why his pressure dropped so low.  He has medical marijuana, but it's sort of like the old days of whiskey being medicinal.

The afternoon news ran a segment on this today, with Dr. Heard.  The problem seems to be related to chronic heavy use.  Chronic heavy use of most anything causes problems.  But gee, they get to demonize pot again.  It has verifiable medical uses.  But it won't make money for big pharma.
