A friend decided to grow his own mushrooms, and all he found on the web was sites selling the spores for hallucinogenic strains, called chimera or reality benders.

Scary stuff those shroomers, but shitaakes? Love em, and would love to learn to grow them!

Any advice?

Well, I was into Greek mythology when I was in school - so I have known about Chimeras for decades

See..... thats the ODD part here. I was like you. I specialized in ancient history and mythology.... YET.... I had never seen the word.... AT ALL....before being drawn into that History Channel experience.... still don't know how to pronounce it.....

But why is that??

Sometimes you learn alot about things by learning what it is that you are NOT told. At least thats the way I am discovering that it works in my strange world!

Like Chimera for example. I am a fairly well read person. I liked to think .... or at least when I had time to read ... I considered myself that. It is an anomaly that I had never seen that word. What does that vacant spot in my learning  tell me.?.... that the word was with held from me.... until now..... so I am answering the call now to look... after all of these years.... into " Chimera"   Linda

Hard to determine what is considered a Chimera in this day and age considering the diversity of life found on this planet alone could fill volumes of encyclopedias. Not to mention the natural course of mutations and the rate at which each species mutates. Did all races of humans evolve together or did something happen to make one race unique...could this also be considered a "Chimera"? Technically nearly everything that evolved differently from it's parent organism is a chimera.

DNA studies tell us now that all humans are descended from 5 human females. Tracing the mitrochrondrial DNA this is possible... so in the broadest sense it is possible to say that we are all either brothers and sisters.... or cousins at the very least.

But getting back to the blood type which is the only thing that I seem to be able to remember. Why is that? That a true Chimera has TWO distinclty different blood types. How can that be?  Linda

To understand how modern genetic engineering can produce chimeras, we must understand the genetic basis of such entities. Chimeras, from a geneticist's point of view, are living creatures that contain two or more genetically distinct lines of cells that originated from two or more different zygotes. (This is different from another genetic phenomenon called mosaicism, where different cell lines may emerge from one single zygote.) In essence, chimeras are complexes of two genetically different animals.

Scientists have noted long ago the existence of natural chimeras, and these usually occur within the same species. An example is the extremely rare fertile male tortoiseshell cat that carries both male and female chromosomes as a result of fusion between the brother and sister embryos during fetal development. Another example is the parasitic chimerism that occurs naturally in the lifecycle of the leftvent fish. The immature male leftvent attaches itself to a female fish, and fuses its body to that of the female, and a chimera is thus formed. The male then loses most of its organs and focuses on the development of the testes instead, thereby reaching sexual maturity. The female nourishes the male via their interconnected circulatory systems.

Scientists have begun blurring the line between human and animal by producing chimeras—a hybrid creature that's part human, part animal.

Chinese scientists at the Shanghai Second Medical University in 2003 successfully fused human cells with rabbit eggs. The embryos were reportedly the first human-animal chimeras successfully created. They were allowed to develop for several days in a laboratory dish before the scientists destroyed the embryos to harvest their stem cells.
Minnesota last year researchers at the Mayo Clinic created pigs with human blood flowing through their bodies.

And at Stanford University in California an experiment might be done later this year to create mice with human brains.

Scientists feel that, the more humanlike the animal, the better research model it makes for testing drugs or possibly growing "spare parts," such as livers, to transplant into humans.

Watching how human cells mature and interact in a living creature may also lead to the discoveries of new medical treatments.

But creating human-animal chimeras—named after a monster in Greek mythology that had a lion's head, goat's body, and serpent's tail—has raised troubling questions: What new subhuman combination should be produced and for what purpose? At what point would it be considered human? And what rights, if any, should it have?

There are currently no U.S. federal laws that address these issues.

It seems we have been mining the whole time, and we havent even realized why.

And why do these gold mines still exist, if there isnt any gold to be found? What else is down there that they want so bad?

Our hybridized dna has us acting as slaves after six millenia of becoming civilized, and no end in sight, unless the gold runs out.
