Straight out of Russian news, Vladimir Putin has called for the nation's strategic bombers to enter a state of 'full combat readiness' following the 'snap drills' that were initiated after Israel bombed Russian-made missiles within Syria.

As I reported on Sunday, Russia's large scale amassing of over 160,000 troops, naval ships, fighter planes, and strategic bombers has been virtually ignored by the mainstream media — with only Russian-based news services really reporting on the entire event. From the Israeli bombing of the Russian missiles to the 'snap drills' calling upon Russian forces to enter this period of 'full combat readiness', it appears that only RT has been analyzing the situation and looking at what's going on based on military sources.

Tabloid Media Too Busy to Cover Brewing World Conflict

Originally being revealed by an anonymous intelligence individuals within the US military and shared with CNN as reported by the Israeli National News, the revelation that Israel was behind the strike on the Russian-made missiles in Syria may be behind the reason for the combat drill — assuming the Russians found out before the general public. Unfortunately, the US mainstream media is too busy covering the minor intricacies of what George Zimmerman ate for breakfast today to discuss the potential brewing of mega conflict.

And when you throw Edward Snowden into this mix of tensions between world powers, it's additional fuel on the fire amid all of this diplomatic turmoil. And with  the intelligence leak that it was Israel who blew up Russia's missiles after they deemed them to be a threat to the country, you have a real serious key going into the ignition of world war.

Russia Challenges the U.S. by Equipping Syria With S-300, Yakhont Missiles

Posted by Tamir Eshel
19 May 2013

The delivery of Russian SS-N-26 coastal defense and SA-21 (S-300 PMU2) air defense missile systems to Syria is significant, since Moscow is providing the Syrian regime the capability to defend from Foreign intervention. Defense-Update reports.

In fact, the Russian weapons are providing Syria a level of defense so that the Russians will not have to send in their military power to defend their strategic assets in Syria. Although Israel may consider this move a potential challenge to its 'qualitative superiority', the Russian move is not aimed against Israel, but against the USA and Europe.

By supplying Syria with such weapons Russia is 'drawing a line in the sand', to prevent a possible intervention in Syria, as the west have practiced in Iraq in 2003 and in Libya in 2011. Unlike the two countries that gave in to the West, Russia feels Syria is committed to Syria under a defense pact, and is now making this statement clear. Another manifestation of this statement and strategy is growing presence of Russian naval vessels in the Eastern Mediterranean and at Port of Tartus.

Analysis:

U.S. sources claim that the current systems are delivered with an upgraded radar, "that makes them more effective, according to American officials who are familiar with classified intelligence reports".

Moreover, the missiles could also only put Israeli assets at risk, but also limit international activities off the Syrian coast, would a U.N. embargo enforced on the Syrian regime. Moscow has repeatedly blocked several initiatives to bring an end to the bloodshed of Civil War in Syria.

More recently, investigations about alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria were also derailed by Russian opposition. Russia is determined not to allow NATO and the Western Alliance to "politicize the issue" (off alleged use of Weapons of Mass Destruction – WMD) as was the case of the "Iraqi scenario". Russia's foreign minister, Sergey V. Lavrov, said.

Russia regards Syria as one of its longstanding allies in the region. while Moscow is reluctant to intervene in Syria and act forcibly against the rebels, it is apparently providing Basher al Assad all the help they can to remain in power, maintain his military forces and protect, at least parts of the Syrian territory that is important to the Russians and to the Syrian regime – the concentration of Ala'awite minority, along the coastal area and in Northern Syria, and areas along the Lebanese border, including Damascus.

Able to keep U.S. and NATO warships at risk would potentially deter possible foreign action, such as maintaining a 'no fly zone' or a naval blockade, as part of an embargo like the one implemented by the UN over Libya and Iraq.

At the United Nations, the Russians recently blocked proposals that the Security Council mount a fact-finding trip to Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon to investigate the burgeoning flood of refugees, according to Western diplomats.

ED NOTE: Wiki
The S-300 (NATO reporting name SA-10 Grumble) is a series of initially Soviet and later Russian long range surface-to-air missile systems produced by NPO Almaz, all based on the initial S-300P version. The S-300 system was developed to defend against aircraft and cruise missiles for the Soviet Air Defence Forces. Subsequent variations were developed to intercept ballistic missiles.

The S-300 system was first deployed by the Soviet Union in 1979, designed for the air defence of large industrial and administrative facilities, military bases, and control of airspace against enemy strike aircraft.

The project-managing developer of the S-300 is Russian Almaz corporation (government owned, aka "KB-1") which is currently a part of "Almaz-Antei" Air Defence Concern. S-300 uses missiles developed by MKB "Fakel" design bureau (a separate government corporation, aka "OKB-2").

The S-300 is regarded as one of the most potent anti-aircraft missile systems currently fielded.[3] Its radars have the ability to simultaneously track up to 100 targets while engaging up to 12. S-300 deployment time is five minutes.[3] The S-300 missiles are sealed rounds and require no maintenance over their lifetime. An evolved version of the S-300 system is the S-400 (NATO reporting name SA-21 Growler), entering limited service in 2004.

Russia to complete delivery of 21 helicopters to Afghanistan by July

11 January 2012
MOSCOW, January 11 (RIA Novosti)  Russia will fulfill a contract to deliver 21 helicopters to Afghanistan in the first half of the year, the Federal Military-Technical Cooperation Service said on Wednesday.

Last May, the United States signed a $367.5 million contract with Russia to buy 21 Mi-17V5 military transport helicopters for the Afghan army.

By December 30, 2011, nine helicopters were delivered to Afghanistan. They are currently being assembly and tested for flightworthiness.

"The remaining 12 Mi-17V-5 helicopters and related equipment will be delivered during the first half of 2012," the service said.

The Mi-17 is an export version of the Mi-8 Hip helicopter. It features powerful turboshaft engines and can transport up to 35 people.

The Mi-17V5 version is equipped with a loading ramp instead of the clam-shell doors, an additional door and a new "dolphin nose".

Russia to Sign Afghan Mi-17 Option by Year-End

17 May 2012
A delivery schedule for an option order of Mil Mi-17 transport helicopters for the Afghanistan Armed Forces will be signed by Russia and the U.S. by the end of the year, Russia's defense exports holding Rosoboronexport said on Thursday.

Rosoboronexport signed a $367.5 milliondeal with the United States in May 2011 for delivery of 21 Mi-17V5s, which the U.S. will transfer to Afghanistan. According to U.S. data, the deal could be worth up to $900 million including spares and servicing.

The contract also includes an option for delivery of a further 12 Mi-17s.

"In February this year, we signed an additional protocol for delivery of two helicopters as part of the option deal, and we plan to deliver ten more by the end of this year," said Rosoboronexport's head of helicopter exports, Grigory Kozlov.

Rosoboronexport is counting on further development of military-technical cooperation with the United States, including with regard to sales to third nations, he said...

Russia's Rosoboronexport to Continue Arms Supplies to Syria

12 June 2012
PARIS, June 12 (RIA Novosti) Russia's state-controlled arms trader Rosoboronexport intends to fulfill its contract for the supply of armaments to Syria, Rosoboronexport Deputy CEO Igor Sevastyanov said on Tuesday.

"No one can ever accuse Russia of violating the rules of armaments trade set by the international community," Sevastyanov said in response to a question about whether Russia would fulfill its contract for the supply of Pantsyr mobile gun and missile air defense systems to Syria.

"The contract was signed long ago and we supply armaments that are self-defense rather than attack weapons, and there can be no talk about any violations by Russia or Rosoboronexport either de jure or de facto," Sevastyanov said, adding it was the UN Security Council that served as an instrument of supporting global stability.

Sevastyanov referred to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov who said "even with the greatest fantasy, it is hard to imagine that air defense systems can be used to suppress opposition actions."

"The contracts that were signed and do not contradict international law must be fulfilled. If the international community adopts other decisions, they will be fulfilled by Russia," Sevastyanov said.

Russian President Vladmir Putin said in early June that Russia was not supplying arms to Syria which can be used against protesters. "As for arms supplies, Russia is not supplying arms that could be used in civil conflicts," Putin said during a joint news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Friday.

U.S. Says Russia Supplying Syria with Combat Helicopters

13 June 2012
The United States suspects Russia of supplying Syria with combat helicopters that will be used against peaceful protesters, the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said.

"We are concerned about the latest information we have that there are attack helicopters on the way from Russia to Syria, which will escalate the conflict quite dramatically," Clinton said.

She once again said that the United States wants Russia to stop supplying Syria with all kinds of weapons.

"We have confronted the Russians about stopping their continued armed shipments to Syria. They have from time to time said that we shouldn't worry, everything they're shipping is unrelated to their actions internally. That's patently untrue," Clinton added.

U.S. Buys More Russian Helicopters for Afghanistan | World | RIA Novosti

14 June 2012
The Pentagon is buying ten more Mi-17 helicopters for the Afghan military from Russia's state-run weapons broker Rosoboronexport, the company confirmed on Thursday.

"I can confirm to you that we have indeed been approached by the U.S. Defense Department about the purchase of ten Mi-17s," Rosoboronexport spokesman Vyacheslav Davidenko told RIA Novosti.

Davidenko declined to disclose the value of purchase, but Rosoboronexport signed a $367.5 million deal with the United States in May 2011 for delivery of 21 Mi-17V5s.
The latest sale is the option part of the 2011 U.S. Army contract with the Moscow-based defense equipment holding, for twelve more helicopters.

The Pentagon is also reported to have bought two Mi-17s earlier this year.
The total value of the deal including engineering services and spare parts could be around $900 million, according to U.S. officials...

U.S. Lawmakers Cut Pentagon Ties with Russian Arms Exporter

20 July 2012
MOSCOW, July 20 (RIA Novosti, Anastasia Markitan, Howard Gethin)  U.S. lawmakers passed a bill on Thursday breaking contracts between the Pentagon and Russian state-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport, which they claim is "arming the oppressive Syrian regime," the House of Representatives said on its website.

The bill, introduced by Democrat Congressman Jim Moran, was passed by an overwhelming 407-5 vote and was attached to the 2013 U.S. military budget, according to the House of Representatives' statement.

"It is beyond unacceptable for the United States Government to work with a firm that is arming the oppressive Syrian regime," Moran said. "The United States does not condone the massacre of innocent men, women and children. Furthering contracts with Rosoboronexport contradicts our nation's commitment to the principles of freedom and democracy."

The passage of the bill came several hours after Russia and China vetoed for the third time a UN Security Council resolution on Syria authorizing non-military sanctions against President Bashar al-Assad's regime if it fails to withdraw heavy weapons and troops from urban areas within 10 days.

Pentagon to Buy Russian Helicopters Despite Ban

4 April 2013
WASHINGTON, April 4 (By Maria Young for RIA Novosti) – The US Department of Defense said Thursday it plans to sidestep a Congressional ban to purchase 30 helicopters from Russian state-owned defense firm Rosoboronexport, despite objections from US lawmakers who allege that the firm has equipped the Syrian government to commit brutal crimes against civilians.

"The Department of Defense (DOD) has notified Congress of its intent to contract with Rosoboronexport for 30 additional Mi-17 rotary-wing aircraft to support the Afghanistan National Security Forces (ANSF) Special Mission Wing," Pentagon spokesman James Gregory told RIA Novosti in emailed comments.

The 2013 National Defense Authorization Act, approved by Congress last year, includes an amendment that prohibits financial contracts between the United States and Rosoboronexport, except when the Secretary of Defense determines that such arrangements are in the interest of national security.

"Given current timelines, the department has determined that Rosoboronexport is the only viable means of meeting ANSF requirements" for the helicopters, Gregory said.

The contract totals $690 million, most of which would go to the Russian arms maker, he added.

In February, US President Barack Obama announced plans to reduce the number of US troops in Afghanistan from 66,000 to 34,000 over the next year, leaving Afghan forces with an increased role in their nation's security...

Pentagon Signs New Russian Helicopter Deal

17 June 2013
MOSCOW, June 17 (RIA Novosti) – Russia and the United States have signed a contract for the delivery of Russian Mi-17 helicopters for the Afghan army, a Russian government agency said Monday.

The Russian state-owned defense firm Rosoboronexport and the US Department of the Army signed the contract on Sunday in Paris "as part of joint efforts to combat terrorism," Russia's Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation said in a statement.

It did not say exactly how many helicopters were to be delivered, but Rosoboronexport deputy head Alexander Mikheyev told RIA Novosti that the contract was for 30 Mi-17V5 helicopters. He said the value could not be disclosed, according to the contract's terms.

Both parties expressed hope for an expansion of cooperation in the defense and technology sector, the statement said, adding that Russia was committed to its "international security policy and ready for any form of collaboration in that area."

In February, US President Barack Obama announced plans to reduce the number of US troops in Afghanistan from 66,000 to 34,000 over the following year, leaving Afghan forces with an increased role in their nation's security.

No Helicopters on Board Ships to Syria - Rosoboronexport

13 July 2013
MOSCOW, July 13 (RIA Novosti)  Russia's state-run arms company denied on Friday that any of its warships presently heading for Syria were carrying Mil Mi-25 helicopter gunships it had tried to deliver last month in a civilian cargo vessel, and said they were still on board that ship.

A group of Russian warships from the Black Sea, Northern and Baltic fleets are currently in transit to military exercises in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Black seas, a Russian military official told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

The Russian-owned cargo vessel Alaed had to stop off the coast of Scotland on June 18 with a cargo of three Mi-25 attack helicopters on board after the British insurer Standard Club withdrew its cover for the ship. It later turned back and entered the port of Murmansk.

Femco, the Russian shipping company which owns the Alaed, has criticized Standard Club for what it says was its "baseless action" in withdrawing insurance cover.

"We will not judge whether Standard Club's actions were correct or not – that is a matter for the lawyers and the maritime community," the company said in reply to questions from a Financial Times journalist posted on its website.

"We think the Club's actions were unjustified, because it was presented, at its request, with all the necessary explanations including a copy of the cargo manifest and all the legal cargo documents."

Danish company United Nordic Shipping, which had chartered the Alaed, unilaterally broke off its agreement with Femco, after which Standard Club withdrew insurance cover. Femco says at present, cover has been withdrawn only from the Alaed.

Femco later changed the ship's registration - which had originally been in the Netherlands Antilles island of Curacao - and it is now Russian-flagged.

The Deputy Head of Russia's Federal Service for Military Technical Cooperation, Vyacheslav Dzirkaln, said on July 11 that the Russian Navy would carry out its duty to defend Russian shipping in the event of a blockade of Syria.

The helicopters were the center of a diplomatic row in June after the United States accused Russia of supplying weapons which could be used against peaceful demonstrators. Russian denied the accusation, saying it was only returning aircraft and air defense systems which had been repaired under a previously agreed contract, and the weapons were not capable of being used against civilians.

Pentagon Stands By Russian Arms Deal

18 July 2013
MOSCOW, July 18 (RIA Novosti) – The Pentagon has no plans to halt a $550 million deal with Russia to acquire helicopters for the Afghan Special Mission Wing, the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff said Thursday.

In late June the Special US Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction urged the Pentagon to put the deal on hold until the unit was fully recruited and properly trained.
"On the Mi-17 [helicopters], ... I support continuing on the path we are on," JCS Chairman Martin Dempsey said. "To get the Afghans as capable as possible by the end of 2014. And that will require us to stay committed to that fleet."

There is no way we can transition at this point to give them anything other, he said.
Responding to lawmakers' criticism of the deal over Russian arms supplies to the Syrian government, Dempsey suggested that did not mean there could not be collaboration elsewhere: "There's also plenty of places where we have common interests, and Afghanistan just happens to be one of those with Russia."

The Pentagon has bought 33 Mi-17 helicopters from Rosoboronexport, the state-run Russian arms exporter, since May 2011 and signed a contract for 30 more on June 17, in the face of fierce opposition from Congress.

Iran Adds Military Aid to Syria as Russia Gives Money - Bloomberg

18 July 2013
Iran is increasing its support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in an effort to ensure its Shiite ally stays in power, a U.S. State Department official said today.

Iran has supplied the Syrian regime with military equipment and is supporting Hezbollah troops who are increasingly involved in heavy front-line fighting, said the official, who wasn't authorized to speak publicly.

Syria is also getting help from Russia, which continues to fill existing arms contracts with Syria and lets it skirt international financial sanctions by allowing the regime and individuals to use Russian banks, the official said...
