"American Dream": Food loaded into Dumpsters while Hundreds of Hungry Americans Restrained by Police

QuoteHundreds of poor people waiting outside of a closed grocery store for the possibility of getting the remaining food is not the picture of the "American Dream." Yet on March 23, outside the Laney Walker Supermarket in Augusta, Ga., that is exactly what happened.

Residents filled the parking lot with bags and baskets hoping to get some of the baby food, canned goods, noodles and other non-perishables. But a local church never came to pick up the food, as the storeowner prior to the eviction said they had arranged. By the time the people showed up for the food, what was left inside the premises—as with any eviction—came into the ownership of the property holder, SunTrust Bank.

The bank ordered the food to be loaded into dumpsters and hauled to a landfill instead of distributed. The people that gathered had to be restrained by police as they saw perfectly good food destroyed. Local Sheriff Richard Roundtree told the news "a potential for a riot was extremely high."

"People got children out here that are hungry, thirsty," local resident Robertstine Lambert told Fox54 in Augusta. "Why throw it away when you could be issuing it out?"

SunTrust bank is trying to confuse the issue and not take direct responsibility for their actions. Their media relations officer Mike McCoy, stated, "We are working with store suppliers as well as law enforcement to dispose of the remaining contents of the store and secure the building." Yet he also said that the food never belonged to SunTrust Bank.

There is no need to sugar coat what happened. Teresa Russell, chief deputy of the Marshal's Office in Richmond County, said the owner of the building ordered that the food be taken to the landfill. Some people even followed the truck to the landfill and were still turned away.

This is nuts but happens a lot

At least here in Vegas the stuff gets marked down super cheap and/or sent to the shelters

The psychopathy is becoming more blatant by the day.  I am in disbelief.

When are they going to skip the formalities, and just start mowing people down en masse?

It looks simple to me. If they gave it away then who would buy it upfront in the store. 99% of the customers would line up out back and wait for free food. You should do what they do here. All lost food is purchased by guys that go around on motocycles and the food is feed to pigs. Even the waste at the food stations including McDs. Nothing is put to waste here.

So just give those people a baby pig and when they come back with it full grown they make a proffit. Have a pig exchange. Give them another baby and a pocketful of cash and they will do it again. A pig here is a walking bank. ( Hence the Piggy bank ) Thousands of people do this here, In the USA you all have a dog, toss it out! get a pig..lol they all have a pigs to sell. Pigs like slop to eat. Every dish is scrapped clean and the waste put in a pig bucket to sell. I made over 50USD a month selling my pig food. And they supply the pig barrel.

There are more pigs in China than people in the states. Oink, Oink....

deuem,
  ps
pigs sell for over 3 dollars a pound here. The entire pig, not just the meat. It takes 8 months from baby to market if you feed it well. A year if you don't

True that is their logic... and it has some merit on a large scale

Here in Las Vegas food they will mark down food to 50% or less to move it out. A lot of non perishable stuff ges to the food shelter and the perishables, especially from Casino kitchens goes to the pig farm.

One concern here in Vegas (and why they lock dumpsters) is the HEAT.  Stuff tossed here spoils within an hour. And the fear of law suits from people eating bad food is a real issue...

But in this case.... this was just plain WRONG :P  They could have at least donated it to the shelters and saved the bad press

Bacom used to be a cheap food here... now today it's almost $5.00 a pound for good stuff, $2.50 a pound for the cut rate stuff..

Oh wait  did I say a pound?  That is 16 ounces...  but look at that package of bacon these days... its actually only 14 ounces... oh wait  that was last year ... it's now only 12 ounces

::)

They figure most consumers are stupid.  They raise the price only a little but cut down the quantity slowly.  Most items these days are in smaller containers...  but the price stays the same or is higher

Next year you will buy it by the strip.

Yes on the law suits. Dangerous stuff in dumpsters!

Soon they will just grind it like waste paper and mush will come out to a sealed container.

Pigs are where the money is!

That is what post-scarcity means, though, duem.  This is literal proof that we are at that point now, at least provisionally, as far as food is concerned.

We're being held back by the people who insist on believing in scarcity.

No they don't get to feed the pigs for free. The people buy scrap waste food. The stuff you leave on your plate and feed it to the pigs. They turn the eate food that no one would eat into a fat pig that everyone eats.Z said they did thin in vegas also. In a lot of countries that waste goes into the landfils because it can't be re-cycled like plastic.

Pigs re-cycle it for us.

I don't know about letting people die or hoew that fits this picture. There are many poor fat people here. The only beggars I see are the people that have limbs missing. And most of the begging is done by writing in chalk on the cement your problem and a cup next to that. Only the fake beggars follow anyone around. It is the culture.

I would not believe everything you read about here. This place is on the move up the ladder and going to take 1st place very soon. While I see OB Care has shut down the states. Whens the last time you road in a first class bullet train or drover the highest bridges or drove down brand new super highways 4 lanes wide. Every single person has the new smart phones except me. Food here is cheap, All food prices are based on the poor or lower class being able to buy it. Except for McDonalds and Kentucky. Their prices are the same as home. But local food is everywhere, no shortages that I can see.

In the states greed sets the market price and not reality. So shopping can cost you 1/3rd or more of your pay. Hey this place feeds 1.6 billion people 3 times a day and I have never seen people lurking at dumpsters like in the photo. I am also still to over weight so I guess I have been finding enough good food. lol

Oh, by the way the Chinese are experts at price control. They do exactly what I say, Don't buy it. If the price goes up on something they stay away until it drops again. It happens very quick. A couple of days to a week. The most important thing you can do with money is not to use it.

It is not me in the picture. But I do like it this way, No dumpster diving for Deuem
