Emergency Herbs: Elderberry, Hawethorne, and Periwinkle

Elderberry extract  is sold in a commercial form as a flu remedy, but it can also be made at home with berries and vodka or brandy. I've had a bottle in the refrigerator for a while and though we have not needed  for the flu, we have found that it is excellent for sinus infections. 

Hawthorne, the heart herb, has been said to be helpful for coronary insufficiency

Periwinkle would be my goto treatment of choice for a stroke.

You can make enough of any extract to last a lifetime,or  to share with others, for the cost of a few dollars worth of herbs and  alchohol or gycerin. Of course, no one should take any remedies without first being education on possible side effects or interactions with prescription drugs.

These don't quite fit in the herbal category but:

Rescue Remedy is excellent for emotional or physical trauma.

Arnica, both oral and cream form, helps with muscle strains and aches.

The Homeopathic remedy known as Ledum is a must in our household, because my husband has an allergic reaction to red dye no. 4 and to some insect bites  that causes him to break out in hives. If he takes Ledum early, when he first notices the reaction setting in, it seems to head them off.

i have elderberry plants around the place..and can tell you that elderberry jam is a great preventive for colds and flu
and if you are  a bit on the lazy canning side..like me...freezer jam is the answer
4 cups of the berrys, four cups of sugar (that's the recipe.. i don't think you need that much)
and a package of freezer pectin ..mash it all up wait 15 minutes and jar and freeze..
works with almost any berry and/ or fruit

not i need to go do more research on the periwinkle  case while i have it all over ..i mostly pull it out....yep need more info

Just think, Sky Otter, you may be growing a great cash crop and not even know it. 

I know that it is supposed to be very invasive, but I'm having trouble getting a patch of it started. It spreads fine, but the older tendrils keep dying off.

Yes! I'd be happy to have anything you pull up,  if it hasn't been treated to pesticides or roundup. And while you're mailing, how about a bulb or two of your favorite garlic?
