TANGIPAHOA PARISH, LA — UPDATE: We're now told that the dam is "damaged," which is less severe than they originally thought. However, a manditory evacuation still stands for all areas within a mile of the Tangipahoa River. The greatest location of concern is the Kentwood area.

The Mississippi Emergency Management originally notified GOHSEP of the issue at the dam at Lake Tangipahoa at Percy Quinn State Park. If the damaged area fails, it could cause swift and massive flooding.

We're told all residents along this area are being forced to evacuate. This includes roughly 50,000 people.

Shelters are located at Hammond West Side Elementary Montessori School, Hammond Junior High Magnet School, Natalbany Elementary School, Nesom Middle School, Amite High School, and Kentwood High Magnet School.

Sheriff Edwards has called for additional resources to support our parish. 40 busses and 14 ambulances will be deployed to the Amite Arena to assist in the evacuation. Evacuees will be transported to our local shelters. It is asked that if you have family or friends in the area needing a place to stay, please open your home to them.
