I remember the ones at Lakeside when I was younger.  They anything we threw in the water, and they were always crowded around the dock with mouths agape.

A "Catfish" probably received that name because it has cat-looking "whiskers" on the sides of its mouth.

After making that statement, I did go to wiki - "Catfishes (order Siluriformes) are a diverse group of ray-finned fish. Named for their prominent barbels, which resemble a cat's whiskers".

Of course, the name has nothing to do with what they eat, and they will eat just about anything, except maybe in-water vegetation.

Corn-mealed and fried catfish - - um um GOOD!
