Injectable, Cellular-Scale Optoelectronics with Applications for Wireless Optogenetics

ABSTRACT:
Successful integration of advanced semiconductor devices with biological systems will accelerate basic scientific discoveries and their translation into clinical technologies. In neuroscience generally, and in optogenetics in particular, the ability to insert light sources, detectors, sensors, and other components into precise locations of the deep brain yields versatile and important capabilities. Here, we introduce an injectable class of cellular-scale optoelectronics that offers such features, with examples of unmatched operational modes in optogenetics, including completely wireless and programmed complex behavioral control over freely moving animals. The ability of these ultrathin, mechanically compliant, biocompatible devices to afford minimally invasive operation in the soft tissues of the mammalian brain foreshadow applications in other organ systems, with potential for broad utility in biomedical science and engineering.

Borg nanoprobes

Borg Nano Probes are programmable microscopic mechanisms used by the Borg to prepare a lifeforms body for assimilation usually in the form of an injection directly into the bloodstream through two tubules that erect from the upper hand or top knuckle of the drone.

In most humanoid cases we notice the drones going strait for the arterial area of the neck of the being who is to be assimilated to promote faster spread of the probes throughout the circulatory system.

After a short amount of time once introduced to the blood culture, the probes attach themselves to the red blood cells and begin to alter the structure and function of the cell. The dna of the assimilated being is also changed. The body then begins to change in color, usually pale in appearance accompanied by streaks of discolorment throughout, mostly baring a striking resemblance to a necrosis of the skin. Metallic modules for implants are then created by the nano probes and pushed out from under the epidermis enabling cybernetic implants to be attached.

The nano-probe have many other functions as well. A few of those would be operating inside the drone bloodstream and cybernetic attachments aiding in the overall function of the drone by performing repairs to both cybernetic and organic systems. They also seem to act as enhancements to the muscular system and nervous systems, no doubt a compliment to the cybernetic attachments later installed. Many new systems are created as well such as electrical pathways, and processing and data storage nodes
