When visiting this habitat, linger for a moment and consider this fact: you are looking at the largest population of sea otters in the state of Oregon.

This species was hunted to extinction in the Oregon wild over a century ago, with the last known individual being killed just off the Newport Beach in 1907.

The economic value of the Sea Otter extends back to the very beginning of our nation.

On May 8, 2012, the Oregon Coast Aquarium's newest sea otter was formally introduced to the public. This short video was created during his quarantine period and is a light-hearted look at the otter's shy nature.

The otter has yet to be named and is officially referred to as Otter 564. The Aquarium is holding a naming contest for the little guy on our Facebook page.

(Ed note: the winning name was 'Quill'.)

This brief video offers a behind-the-scenes look at the Aquarium's newest sea otter, temporarily designated as "Otter 564."

Orphaned when his mother was killed by a shark, Otter 564 officially joined the Aquarium's population in May 2012.

Ken Lytwyn, Curator of Marine Mammals, discusses the assimulation process for the young animal and offers some insights into his character, too.

We went up to the west coast of Scotland for about three days.
It pissed down the whole time. We were gutted , but we found a nature reserve place and they had this otter called fingal.. And he was amazing.

They are doing well in upper Northumberland and Scotland.

They really just need to be left alone, and they will flourish. :)
"Today, a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration – that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There's no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we're the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the weather."

Swimming lessons for the new baby!   8)

"A new Sea Otter was born at the Seattle Aquarium on 1/14/2012. When this video was shot on 1/15, the Otter pup was 1 day old.

It had snowed the night before and froze up on the stairs leading to an upper baclony where I shot the video. Some groundskeepers were scraping the ice off of the stairs with snow shovels. I thought it was cute how Aniak held Sekiu closer and carefully watched out while that clanging was going on."

In case there was any question, Otters LOVE to play!  ;D

"Every evening a river otter comes to play with our daughter's dog Rio.

What was once an acquaintance on the other side of the fence has now become a friend who comes to play through the fence.

It has been interesting to watch as their trust of each other has developed over the past several months."

"Sidney the baby asian small clawed river otter playing.

Sidney is not a pet. I am a professional animal caretaker and work at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, CA. "

That is really great to hear, and I agree!

I think it is fitting and well deserved that Oregon is now playing a big role in caring for orphaned Otters, considering the atrocious role it played in their history.

Yes the similarity is very close. The video of Sydney above jumping around shows quite clearly how close they are.  ;D

Also notice the keen interest in the keys! LOL  ;)  ;D

This family of river otters was recorded in May of 2011. They were across the Allegheny River from my home. I had to zoom the camera to 30X to get this video. I had the camera on a tripod to maintain stability. The otters were introduced to the river several years ago and this was the frist time we saw them all together. A bald eagle was waiting for the remains of the otters dinner. He sat on a branch in a nearby sycamore tree waiting his turn to feed.
