House votes to delay bulk ammunition purchase by DHS

QuoteThe U.S. House of Representatives has voted to block the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from purchasing large stockpiles of ammunition until it reports to Congress.

By a 234-192 vote late on Wednesday, the House adopted an amendment to DHS spending bill for 2014 that would require the agency to report to Congress the need and cost of buying over a billion rounds of new ammunition.

"Given this large purchase, the American people and members of Congress rightfully had concerns and questions," Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) who proposed the amendment said, according to The Hill.

"This is a responsible amendment which ensures that Congress and the American people are aware of the necessity and the cost of ammunition prior to entering into new contracts for procurement," he added.
