What is it these wealthy elite know? Why are they preparing for the worst?

I think Occupy Wall Street in particular, both encouraged and popularised the idea that the rich are supposedly to blame for most of society's current problems.  Nearly everyone has had their minds poisoned by Marx at this point, to one extent or another; and Marx' primary contribution (if you can call it that) was his theory of class warfare, which has encouraged an obsession with victimhood and a relentless belief that whenever anything bad happens to us, it's always someone else's fault, and someone else's responsibility.

There needs to be change on both sides of the fence.  Hitler admitted in Mein Kampf that all he really did was exploit human psychological vulnerabilities, and that if said weaknesses had not been there, he would not have been able to accomplish anything.  We need to start closing those holes; and two of the most fundamental ones are the belief in arbitrary, supposedly inherent authority, and the incessant craving that we all have to view ourselves in some way as being superior to everyone else.

It is the craving for superiority, that is our single greatest impediment to real improvement and progress as a species.  If we're white, we want to see ourselves as superior to blacks.  If we're black, we want to see ourselves as superior to whites.  If we're a man, we want to see ourselves as superior to women.  If we're a woman, we want to see ourselves as superior to men.

The desire for superiority is the root cause of most forms of evil, and it is the root cause behind the desire for money itself.  It leads to exclusion and segregation, and it justifies slavery because it allows us to falsely rationalise that we are human, while "others," are less than that.

Although to a certain extent it exists within mainstream or more normal humanity, the desire for superiority is primarily associated with the Service to Self polarity, which manifests in exoteric or materialistic terms as psychopathy.  We need to find a way to discourage strongly STS polarised souls from incarnating on this planet.  Probably the single most effective way that we can do that, is by innoculating ourselves against the games they play against the rest of us.  If we manage that, it will be pointless for them to come here in the first place.
