Considering all the chaos and uproar surrounding 2012 and the rampant doom porn, I don't see how we missed a near kill shot on July 23rd  :o  for I do not have any memory of it...

I am also amazed that Nasa admitted it was a close call

I don't believe most of what Never A Straight Answer says, just saying.
I know that I know nothing - thanks Capricorn.

You don't believe it was a close call?

i don't think we did miss it.. i think because of all of  the 2012 stuff we were at saturation point and just took it as another piece of doom porn and chaos

what i really can't believe is that 2012 was 5 years ago..geeeeeeeze

don't you find that our sensitivity to this stuff has dulled?..it's become just another story - observe and move on...

This is my point.  How did we miss this?

Sky in all of your links that you provided in regards to CME's posted on this forum, I could not find anything about this particular event.  The asteroid on the 22 nd of July is a different event.

If NASA knew about this and didn't tell or warn us, that does not give one a very good feeling.

I think this is why we didn't remember it.  We weren't told about it!!!!

July 23, 2014: If an asteroid big enough to knock modern civilization back to the 18th century appeared out of deep space and buzzed the Earth-Moon system, the near-miss would be instant worldwide headline news.

Two years ago, Earth experienced a close shave just as perilous, but most newspapers didn't mention it. The "impactor" was an extreme solar storm, the most powerful in as much as 150+ years.

"If it had hit, we would still be picking up the pieces," says Daniel Baker of the University of Colorado.

And this is a sobering statistic.

In February 2014, physicist Pete Riley of Predictive Science Inc. published a paper in Space Weather entitled "On the probability of occurrence of extreme space weather events."  In it, he analyzed records of solar storms going back 50+ years.  By extrapolating the frequency of ordinary storms to the extreme, he calculated the odds that a Carrington-class storm would hit Earth in the next ten years.

The answer: 12%.

Mic   we didn't miss it....it missed us

The most talked-about historical CME is probably the famous Carrington event of 1859. It was strong enough to have wreaked havoc on earthly technologies, if today's technologies had existed at that time. During that event, the sun blasted Earth's atmosphere hard enough that New Englanders could read their newspapers at night by aurora light.

The July 23, 2012 event on the sun was likely more powerful than the Carrington event of 1859, Baker said.
It just wasn't aimed our way.

when i searched i wasn't looking for a kill shot i was looking for a CME but following Z'z lead on what he found here  in reply #15

Dec 10, 2013 - The orbiting Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) captured this image of a powerful coronal mass ejection, or CME, on July 23, 2012.

and what you said above i looked again and the one earlier in march 2012 has lots of info it was a CME X5 and well documented before and after
but the  july 23rd one wasn't aimed in our direction to begin with

Powerful solar flare during night of March 6-7, 2012
By Deborah Byrd in SPACE | March 7, 2012
The March 6-7, 2012 was an X5-class eruption. It was the second major solar flare in a week. Its effects are now headed for Earth.

so i think it's a case of much ado about nothing...

it did happen but it wasn't aimed at us so there was nothing to remember
this is getting sooooooo messed up...sigh

I wonder if we knew a giant CME was heading our way, is there anything we could do to prepare?

Grounding aircraft would be a good idea for example.  Modern planes fly by gps and have computerized landings.  Landing them with the power grid down would be terrible.

I realize what the surge would do to the power grids.  However, what would happen if the grid was shut down prior to the surge?

For example if my TV is on, and a lightning strike hits power lines close to my house, chances are good my TV would be fried.  However if I had unplugged the TV prior to the storm, no damage would be done to it.

Baker said in a press release issued December 9:

My space weather colleagues believe that until we have an event that slams Earth and causes complete mayhem, policymakers are not going to pay attention. The message we are trying to convey is that we made direct measurements of the 2012 event and saw the full consequences without going through a direct hit on our planet.

We have proposed that the 2012 event be adopted as the best estimate of the worst case space weather scenario. We argue that this extreme event should be immediately employed by the space weather community to model severe space weather effects on technological systems such as the electrical power grid.

I liken it to war games – since we have the information about the event, let's play it through our various models and see what happens. If we do this, we would be a significant step closer to providing policymakers with real-world, concrete kinds of information that can be used to explore what would happen to various technologies on Earth and in orbit rather than waiting to be clobbered by a direct hit.

Bottom line: Scientists at the University of Colorado Boulder would like policy makers to use the July 23, 2012 solar storm and its CME – which was measured by our spacecraft – in modeling responses to a similar CME that might be aimed our way.

From what they say here, the biggest problem is the transformers connected to the power grid, as those are not made to be easily disconnected and would try to convert the power surge, probably blowing out in the process and leaving the power grid with a lot of transformer needing replacement.

Yes that is another issue I was looking at...  things happen and then what seems like only a few months later we find it was umpteen years ago...  It feels like time is speeding by so fats we can barely keep up... yet in our daily lives it seems normal..  hard to put into words what I am trying to say

Quotedon't you find that our sensitivity to this stuff has dulled?..it's become just another story - observe and move on...

Yes it has... and it is likely the main reason people have spent less time at forums. Even FB  I see fewer and fewer people interested in the big stuff and tend to lean more toward making fun of you or making troll posts rather than responding to the topic...

I get a few 'likes' and shares on some of the posts but its usually under 6 people that actually focus on the topic  so even from my own friend database at FB there is little real interest

Unfortunately, it has been 5 years  8) I was in Vegas on Halloween for the startup of the ALI certification process,  was tickled to death that I got to spend time with Zorgon and John Lear; still have my autographed tin foil hat hanging on the wall  8) That was in 2012.

In the following 5 years work was very hectic, averaging 60-70 hours a week in 5 days, plus having to travel all over the country...

it was in 2014 that the meltdown with PWM and company happened, late fall I think; my point is, and I know that this applies to myself and Zorgon, it has been such a frenzied ordeal just making it from one day to the next we just haven't paid attention to more than making it thru that day, each day...

Just some food for thought  while we are here... The Hopi Elders believe that there will be a day of purification, and those true to the ancient ways will move to a different reality...

Also, a CME5 event, if it is a direct hit, would take out all the satellites, probably utterly destroy the power grid, virtually everything electronic not shielded in a Farraday cage, and quite possibly deplete and strip a large percentage of the atmosphere...

not to mention the extreme dosage of ionizing radiation...

Killshot does seem to be an appropriate title...
